The gap in this series, the volume on the clergy of the Middle Colonies, was proving such a great hindrance to our revision of Evans' American Bibliography, that we have decided to print this volume for our own use, and to publish it in order to share it with others. The first volume of this series. The Colonial Clergy and the Colonial Churches of New England (Lancaster, 1936), is out of print. The Colonial Clergy of Maryland, Delaware, and Georgia (Lancaster, 1950), and The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina (Boston, 1955) may be obtained of the author (at Dublin, New Hampshire) for $3 a volume. The institutional data which is provided at the end of the New England volume is for the other colonies issued in a separate volume. The Colonial Churches and the Colonial Clergy in the Middle and Southern Colonies (Lancaster, 1938), which is still available from the author. -1- COLUMBIA AND SLAVERY: A PRELIMINARY REPORT Eric Foner Drawing on papers written by students in a seminar I directed in the spring of 2015 and another directed by Thai Jones in the spring of 2016, all of which will soon be posted in a new website, as well as my own research and relevant secondary sources, this report summarizes Columbia’s connections with slavery and with antislavery movements from the founding of King’s College to the end of the Civil War. Significant gaps remain in our knowledge, and investigations into the subject, as well as into the racial history of the university after 1865, will continue. -2- 1. King’s College and Slavery The fifth college founded in Britain’s North American colonies, King’s College, Columbia’s direct predecessor, opened its doors in July 1754 on a beautiful site in downtown New York City with a view of New York harbor, New Jersey, and Long Island. Not far away, at Wall and Pearl Streets, stood the municipal slave market. But more than geographic proximity linked King’s with slavery. One small indication of the connection appeared in the May 12, 1755 issue of the New-York Post-Boy or Weekly Gazette. The newspaper published an account of the swearing-in ceremony for the college governors, who took oaths of allegiance to the crown administered by Daniel Horsmanden, a justice of the colony’s Supreme Court. The same page carried an advertisement for the sale of “two likely Negro Boys and a Girl,” at a shop opposite Beekman’s Slip, a wharf at present-day Fulton Street. -

John Henry Livingston and the Liberty of the Conscience John Coakley Although John Henry Livingston ( 17 46-1825), "father of the Reformed Church," is well known for his achievements as an ecclesiastical statesman, he has not had much fame as a theologian. 1 To be sure, he respectably held the office of Professor of Theology for forty-one years, but not even his contemporary admirers considered him a creative thinker. Thus John De Witt, Livingston's junior colleague at the seminary at New Brunswick, remarked in his funeral oration that there was nothing very original in the system of theology that Livingston taught. 2 And Livingston's biographer and sometime confidant Alexander Gunn, while declaring that he "had a sound, acute, discriminating, comprehensive intellect," and that "in professional learning, he was unquestionably preeminent, and had scarce a compeer in the country, " prefaced those observations by acknowledging that "he was not distinguished, indeed, for fertility of imagination, or for originality and sublimity of thought. "3 Yet his ideas, original or not, have a historical importance, if only because of the undisputed importance of his career as a whole; for ideas underlie actions. In this essay I shall therefore consider Livingston as a man of ideas, and the importance for him of one idea in particular: the liberty of the conscience. This idea played a consistent and fundamental role in his thinking from the time of his first published work, through the early decades of his career when he was making his now famous contributions to the formation of the Reformed Church. -

Later authorities claim him to have been undoubtedly of Saxon origin and cite the rivers Leven in Cumber land and in Yorkshire with manorial estates of Levington, and that these manors drew this name from being situated on these rivers, and were owned by Saxons circa 851. -

Prairie Premillennialism: Dutch Calvinist Chiliasm in Iowa 1847-1900, or the Long Shadow of Hendrik Pieter Scholte Earl Wm. Kennedy Local history as an academic discipline has gained considerable respectability lately, as has the study of American ethnic groups. I am writing a book which compares the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) in the Midwest in the last decades of the nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth century, with special reference to the churches of Orange City (and the surrounding area of Sioux County and Northwestern Iowa), against their background in the Netherlands and the larger church situation in the United States. My study will, I hope, contribute to knowledge of the life and thought of immigrant ethnic churches in our country about a century ago by examining the Orange City-area microcosm of the mini-macrocosm of the Dutch Reformed immigration to the American Midwest. Little has been published comparing the RCA and the CRC. One of my aims is to see how, when, and to what extent these denominations became "Americanized. " I also see this work as a contribution to mutual understanding between the RCA and the CRC. The present article is largely the forerunner of a proposed chapter on premillennialism, which will show that the midwestern, immigrant RCA, especially in Iowa, was receptive to premillenarian teaching, whereas the CRC was closed to it. This divergence reflects the fact that the two groups were formatively influenced by different branches of the 1834 pietist, Calvinist Afscheiding (Secession) in the Netherlands. -

The Reformed Church building on Hooker Avenue is the sixth house of worship of the Reformed Dutch Church of Poughkeepsie. The church was founded when a four-person (2 elders/2 deacons) consistory was formed October 17, 1716, by Dominie Petrus Vas, pastor of Kingston’s ‘Old Dutch’ Church. It was the first church in Dutchess County; its first baptism was that very day: Marytjen, daughter of Frans De Lange and Marytjen Van Schaak, witnessed by Johannes Van Kleek and Aaltjen ter Bos. A tract of land at the corner of Main and Market (where the present church office building now is and the plaque pictured on the front cover is embedded in the sidewalk) was given by Jacobus Van Der Bogert to Barent Van Kleek, Myndert Van Den Bogert, Pieter Fielee and Johannes Van Kleeck on December 26, 1716 as the site for a church building and recorded as the first deed on page 1 of the record of deeds. The church was incorporated in 1789 (recorded Dutchess County, Book No. 1 of church certificates). The name of the church, The Reformed Dutch Church of Poughkeepsie, has remained unchanged all these years, although it has been known simply as The Reformed Church of Poughkeepsie since the building of the present house of worship on Hooker Avenue. The first church building, 1723-1760, seen above (left side) in the Gerald Foster mural “The Hamlet of Poughkeepsie, c.1750" (1937) in FDR’s Poughkeepsie Post Office (west gallery wall) was on a square “Corner Lott” (150’x150’) “Lying and being in Pochkeepseng, butted and Boundett on the Nort Sid to the Rood that runs to the Eastard” [Main St.] and “on the west along the Rood that runs to the Sout…” [Market St.]. -

Coakley, ThD [Editor’s Note: The New Brunswick Theological Seminary is a unique and remarkable institution that, in its early years, rescued Rutgers from extinction. This article about the seminary and its close ties to Rutgers University is particularly timely since this year is the 250th anniversary of the founding of Rutgers University. John W. Coakley, ThD, spoke about “The Theological Institution of Queen’s College: A Brief History of the New Brunswick Seminary” at the May 1, 2015 meeting of the RWJMS Retired Faculty Association. He is the L. Russell Feakes Memorial Professor of Church History, New Brunswick Theological Seminary and the author of the recently published book, New Brunswick Theological Seminary, an Illustrated History, 1784-2014. The article shown below is an abridged version of his presentation at the RWJMS RFA meeting.] The New Brunswick Theological Seminary has been in existence since 1784 in close co- existence with the college and university that came to be called Rutgers. In a complicated land transaction that was finalized just three years ago, the seminary gave up a bit more than half of the land it had occupied since the middle of the 19th century in New Brunswick, and, as a consequence, all but one of the old seminary buildings, a total of ten buildings, have been razed.
