  • MAKING a DIFFERENCE the 2019/20 PFA Community Player Engagement Review WELCOME
MAKING A DIFFERENCE The 2019/20 PFA Community Player Engagement Review WELCOME To the 2019/20 PFA Community Player Engagement Review. The PFA’s Community Department is committed to raising awareness of the extensive work and participation of players in support of community and charitable engagement. We extend our support, guidance and involvement across many diverse areas of activity in Health, Education, Social Inclusion, Sports Participation and Equalities, emphasising our responsibility to make a positive difference in society. As a union we continue to be proactive, continue to raise standards of support to players and encourage greater cooperation from football clubs to adapt their philosophy towards corporate social responsibility. The PFA’s partnerships with the Premier League Charitable Fund, the English Football League Trust and the National League Trust have strengthened once again over the past 12 months. The overarching Code of Practice, to which all Club Community Foundations must adhere, has enabled them to implement a coordinated, structured and focussed approach to community player engagement and embed a sense of social responsibility within all of our players. The player engagement programme during the season has included Club Community Ambassadors in areas of Health, Education, Inclusion and Equalities, recognition of 111 PFA Community Champions at local club level from both the men’s and women’s game, and the continued development of player foundations. See page 7 for a full breakdown of player engagement activities across the season. The 2019/20 campaign is one we will never forget both on and off the pitch. As a result of Covid-19 we have seen the worst public health crisis for a generation, and here in the UK one of the highest casualty rates of the pandemic anywhere in the world.

  • A Gendered Analysis of the Men's and Women's World
A GENDERED ANALYSIS OF THE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WORLD CUP COMMENTARY: THE CONTINUATION OF MEN’S DOMINANCE IN THE FOOTBALLING WORLD Bethan Cate Sullivan A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Lincoln for the degree of MSc by Research for the School of Sport & Exercise Science, College of Social Science March 2019 Abstract This study focused on the Men’s and Women’s World Cup looking into how gender is constructed within the commentary from the 2014 & 2015 tournaments. Football was used because football had been examined in a number of different ways, such as participation rates or newspaper coverage, but commentary hadn’t been analysed in this way before. Using a combination of commentary and match reports, the narratives of the commentary was analysed to find out if there were any stylistic techniques that differed between the two sets of commentary. These tournaments were used because of their proximity to each other and only at the group stages to keep as much continuity between the two sets of commentary as possible. A Foucauldian Discourse analysis was used to examine the World Cup match commentary because of its focus on the ideological content of language. This study found that there were notable differences in the narratives between the men’s and women’s matches. The results showed that the historical impact of the men’s game related to it being the nation’s favourite sport. Men also build the image of a nation in relation to football as a symbol of England, with women taking a secondary place in football.

  • BACK in PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020
No. 191 BACK IN PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020 • July/August No.191 EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary A MOMENT TO SAVOUR, A TIME TO REFLECT fter the unprecedented hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, football is steadily coming back to life. This edition of UEFA Direct reports on the imminent return of our elite competitions, Aassessing the obstacles that the European football community has had to overcome together to successfully rewrite UEFA’s competitions calendar – both for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. UEFA’s return to play, with matches set to kick off in August, represents a milestone moment and the first chance to take stock of our journey to date through an extraordinary period. The COVID-19 pandemic’s outbreak in the spring brought European football to a standstill, and there was understandable concern that UEFA would not be able to finish its 2019/20 club competition season. Other major competitions, such as UEFA EURO 2020 and Women’s EURO 2021, were postponed for a year. The outlook was uncertain, and the ramifications were difficult to predict. As our president underlines in his interview on pages 6–7, despite these challenges, UEFA maintained a steadfast belief that better times would come. Now, following a great deal of hard work, cooperation and compromise behind the scenes, we are ready to deliver a match schedule in August and beyond that will bring the latest club competitions to completion, and set the 2020/21 competition campaign in motion. The moment when ‘live’ UEFA action returns to the spotlight will doubtless be one to savour, offering hope and joy to football lovers young and old.
