It contains an appraisal of the features that contribute to the area’s character and appearance and advice on how best change can be accommodated. 2. PLANNING POLICY CONTEXT 2.1 The Stroud Green Conservation Area was first designated on 14th December 2006. 2.2 Conservation Areas are areas which the Council considers to be of ‘special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’. [Town and Country Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990]. Once a conservation area is designated the Council has a statutory obligation to: from time to time, publish proposals for the preservation of enhancement of the character and appearance of the conservation area. pay special attention to preserving or enhancing the character of the area when considering planning proposals affecting the area. 2.2 Conservation Area designation also brings with it some additional town planning controls to assist the Council to manage change effectively.
