Important Please note that various client versions are supported for the protocols. The client versions listed in the table below are the latest supported version(s). Important Please note that the release version in the Supported from Release column has changed for protocols/applications that are new since the ADC plugin release in August 2015. This will now be the ADC Plugin Build number in the x.xxx.xxx format. The previous releases were versioned as 1.1 (ADC plugin release for December 2012 ), 1.2 (ADC plugin release for April 2013), and so on for consecutive releases.     9 Apple and Nokia: The Transformation from Products to Services In the mid- to late 2000s, Nokia flourished as the world’s dominant mobile phone – and mobile phone operating software – producer. Founded in 1871 originally as a rubber boots manufacturer, by 2007 Nokia produced more than half of all mobile phones sold on the planet, and its Symbian mobile operating system commanded a 65.6 percent global market share. 1 But within half a decade, Nokia would falter and be surpassed in the smartphone market not only by Apple’s revolu- tionary iPhone but also by competitors including Google and Samsung. And in September 2013, Nokia would sell its mobile phone business to Microsoft for $7 billion. 2 Apple literally came out of nowhere – it sold exactly zero mobile phones before the year 2007 (the year Nokia held more than half of the global market share) – but by the first quarter of 2013, Apple had captured almost 40 percent of the US smartphone market and over 50 percent of the operating profit in the global handset industry.3 In fiscal year 2013, Apple would sell five times more smart- phones than Nokia: 150 million iPhones compared to Nokia’s sales of 30 million Lumia Windows phones. 4 In contrast to Nokia, Apple real- ized it wasn’t just about the mobile device itself, it was about leveraging software to create a platform for developing compelling mobile experi- ences – including not just telephony but also music, movies, applica- tions, and computing – and then building a business model that allows partners to make money alongside the company (e.g., Apple’s iTunes and AppStore) and, in so doing, perpetuate a virtuous cycle of making the iPhone attractive to customers over multiple life cycles through ever-ex- panding feature sets.

Power It’s been well documented in a number of articles regarding the contemporary library patron that with the rise in mobile computing and smart phone technology, our patrons are looking for fast and easy service from whichever technological avenue they are using to access our library services. Libraries are responding with increasing numbers of online resources and online means of assistance. One means of communication that is seeing more widespread use in libraries is the use of instant messaging. Many reference desks, and more and more circulation desks, are using instant messaging as a means of communication regarding a number of different library services. Instead of my usual perusal of a number of web sites on a given topic, in this issue I am instead going to describe the application of a number of free online resources at my library’s circulation desk in order to set up instant messaging communications. There are so many great freeware programs out there, I think it is easy to lose sight of how they can be practically applied. We had for some time been using instant messaging at the reference desk. At first we were using the freeware version of a program called Trillian (www.trillian.im), which can connect to multiple IM services and social networks – allowing you to access all simultaneously without the need to run multiple client programs. It also allows for multiple connections with the same service. After a short time with Trillian, we switched to using Meebo (https://www.meebo.com/messenger), which functions like Trillian but is browser based, so there was no need to download any software.
