FOREWORD This study was carried out in the Finnish Environment Institute at the Research Programme for Global Change (GTO) during years 2005 and 2006. The focus was, firstly, to develop national integrated assessment modeling framework of air pollutants, and secondly, to enhance the general understanding of the magnitude of ship emissions and reduction potentials in the sea areas near Finland. The work was funded by the Ministry of the Environment and the KOPRA project in the technological programme ”FINE Particles - Technology, Environment and Health 2002-2005” of the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes). The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support.

OULU Only a few species live in the brackish water and fresh water fi shes thrive. Icebreakers UMEÅ have to assist ships during the winter when VAASA the sea can be ice-covered for even half a year. Because of its northern location, small water volume and scarcity of species, Bothnian Bay is very sensitive to human impact. There are large population centres and heavy industry along the coast. Also the activities on the surrounding land areas affect the state of the sea. The environmental state of the Bothnian Bay is monitored on a regular basis. Many different parties, such as national and regional environmental authorities, industry and municipal wastewater treatment plants, participate The Bothnian Bay in the monitoring. • Page 1 the RD – PILE SYSTEM Hakan Bredenberg, Dr Tech
THE RD – PILE SYSTEM Hakan Bredenberg, Dr Tech, Bredenberg Teknik, Sweden 1) Sami Eronen, Dr Tech, Rautaruukki Corporation, Finland 2) Mats Larsson, Technical Manager, Ruukki Sverige AB 3) ABSTRACT The RD- micro pile system is a complete piling system for drilled steel tube piles with diameters from 90 up to 800 mm. The bearing capacity covers from 100 kN up to more than 10 MN. The system consists of - high strength steel tubes - top plate - threaded pile splices - pile toe drill bit The paper gives a description of the system and applications where it is suitable. Some projects where the RD-pile system has been used are mentioned. Design practice for the system is outlined in design guides and tools available on Internet. The description of the RD-system and the design tools are believed to be very valuable for ISM- members when steel tube piles are considered. INTRODUCTION The RD pile system has been developed by the Finish Rautaruukki Corporation. Since the main target for the pile system is Scandinavian countries, it is geared towards point bearing piles. The dominating ground conditions in that region are very soft clay (undrained shear strength about 10 to 20 kPa) overlaying glacial till or bedrock. Thus, the RD-pile system is also suitable at other locations where similar ground conditions are found. In Scandinavia, RD-piles and the Ruukki RR-piles are constantly increasing their share of the piling market. Today, around 40 % of the total volume of piles (about 2 million metes per year) installed are such piles. Main market extensions have been achieved where traditionally precast concrete piles have dominated.

In particular, the behaviour of web-perforated sections was investigated both numerically and experimentally. Perforation reduces the perpendicular flexural stiffness of the web and thus particularly reduces the distortional buckling strength of the section.

  • Alfons Håkans History 1896 -1930’S
Alfons Håkans history 1896 -1930’s In 1896, Johannes Håkans, a farmer from Strandas, established a small steam sawmill. The sawmill’s production was modest at first and mainly consisted of sawing timber in order to build houses. However, tragedy struck in 1897 when the mill burnt down, believed to be the work of an arsonist. What was left of the burnt sawmill & property were sold and Johannes emigrated to the USA. It was during this time that the steam sawmill was put back into operation and it even expanded to incorporate a forage and planning mill. Johannes returned to Finland and in 1905 he bought back the mill. The company was registered as a limited company in 1910 and during the next 5 years the first tugs, Leo and Tor, were purchased and were used for shipping timber to the mill. In the 1920s, Johannes’s son, Alfons Håkans, joined the family business. More tugs and pontoons were purchased, among them Kraft and Hurtig (built 1920-21) to name but a few. As a tribute to the early years of the company, several old names are still in use on the modern tugs. Hard times struck again in the 1920s with two devastating fires at the sawmill in addition to the world-wide recession that lasted from 1929 until 1932. However, the company made progress as well, one example being the successful salvage of the Greek 10,000tdw steamship ‘Diamantis’ in 1929. The salvage took place off the rocks of Norrskär Island, just outside the Port of Vaasa and Alfons worked as a diver during the salvage.

  • The Problem of Cargo Liquefaction in the Maritime Industry
The Problem of Cargo Liquefaction in the Maritime Industry KIMON ZOGRAFAKIS SUMMARY Summary This project presents an overview of the cargo liquefaction problem which affects bulk carrier vessels. In particular, gaining a clear understanding of the problem and proposing early solutions, is the main focus of this thesis. The project is divided into several chapters approaching the phenomenon from the point of view of operation and design. The understanding of the nature of liquefaction as well as microscopic and macroscopic behaviour of the material when liquefied, led us to identify the critical parameters that cause cargo liquefaction. The cargoes which are more susceptible to liquefaction are iron ore fines and nickel ore even though any granular cargo may liquefy. Ship safety is affected by those cargoes when their form is changed during the voyage and the consequences may be catastrophic both for the vessel and the crew. Detailed accident statistics in the recent years indicate that small size ships, such as Handymax vessels are more at risk due to liquefaction than larger ships, where no accident has occurred so far. Progress in the Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes (BC Code), which was adopted in the mid 60’s due to a spate of losses, led to the adoption of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo Code (IMSBC Code). However, serious shortcomings in regulations still prevail, thus forcing a revision of the code. Developments in different disciplines of engineering, like soil mechanics, offshore engineering and mechanics of materials helped us enhance understanding in the marine field. Similarities of the problem in those areas allowed us to transfer valuable knowledge to our field.
