First Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719 [email protected] www.invisibletheatre.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Invisible Theatre continues its 45th Anniversary Season with the Arizona Premiere of BAKERSFIELD MIST by Stephen Sachs October 13 - 25, 2015 (September 21, 2015, Tucson, Arizona): IT continues its 45th Anniversary Season with the Arizona premiere of BAKERSFIELD MIST directed by Gail Fitzhugh and starring Roberto Guajardo and Susan Kovitz. This recent London hit tells the story of Maude Gutman, an unemployed bartender living in a trailer park, who believes the painting she bought in a thrift store for three bucks is really the “find of the century”, an undiscovered Jackson Pollock worth millions. Is it authentic or not? When Lionel Percy, a renowned art expert from New York, arrives at Maude’s trailer to evaluate the painting, the two embark on a fiery debate over class, truth, and what we personally perceive as valuable. Inspired by true events, this hilarious and thought-provoking new comedy-drama asks vital questions about what makes art and people truly authentic. This production is made possible in part through the generous support of Dr. Robert and Sandy Maxfield “A perfect marriage of emotion and ideas!” - Los Angeles Times “Wonderfully funny! Entertaining…one of the best plays on now in London. Terrific!” -The Telegraph (London) BAKERSFIELD MIST will play from October 13-25, 2015 with the official press opening on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. The Invisible Theatre is located at 1400 N. • From the Artistic Directors
From the Artistic Directors As the weather cools down, the Fountain stays hot. For the second consecutive year, the Fountain Theatre is offering you the Los Angeles Premiere of a recent Pulitzer Prize winning play. Last season, we proudly produced the second production of Martyna Majok’s poignant Cost of Living, following the New York premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club. We are thrilled to now share Stephen Adly Guirgis’ funny and powerful Between Riverside and Crazy. These back-to-back prize winners demonstrate how the Fountain aims to always provide you with theatre of the highest quality on our intimate stage. Stephen Adly Guirgis is widely considered to be one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged from New York theater in decades. This acclaimed and award-winning playwright humbly admits, “A play is not a cure for cancer. The best play in the world is not going to make peace. But it’s going to create a community to perform it, and it’s going to be performed for a community, and when those communities are spicy, when there’s different ingredients in the pot, that, to me, is the most beautiful thing.” In Guirgis’ delightful new play, a fiery group of misfits and outcasts discover how to become a family in a cavernous rent-controlled apartment on Riverside Drive. No matter how down and out his characters are, or how challenging their circumstances, they have faith in the possibility of grace and redemption. Guirgis writes with such humor and truth and humanity, it permeates all aspects of this marvelous play.

  • Programs Change Lives
From the Artistic Directors Here we go! Our first production of our 30th Anniversary season. 30 years ago, when we first entered this theatre and stepped onto its stage, we knew we had found it. A place to call home. Since that April three decades ago, our charming haven on Fountain Avenue has been home to thousands of artists and millions of patrons. Fountain plays are now performed worldwide and seen on TV. Our flamenco concerts are first class. Our outreach programs change lives. We start 2020 with the world premiere of a new play. Human Interest Story could not be more timely. By dramatizing such urgent issues as homelessness, truth in journalism, corruption in politics, and the impact of social media, Human Interest Story is a tale torn from our headlines or downloaded right from our news feeds. And asks some fundamental questions of ourselves. If you’re a longtime member of our Fountain Family, we deeply thank you for your loyal friendship. If you’re a first-timer, welcome. We hope you like what you see and come back throughout this landmark year as we celebrate 30 years of intimate excellence on Fountain Avenue. Our legacy is noteworthy. And our future looks bigger and brighter than ever. Onward! Deborah Culver Stephen Sachs The Fountain Theatre The Fountain creates, develops and produces new plays and re-imagined classics expressing the diverse social issues and cultures of Los Angeles and the nation. We give artistic voice to the voiceless; while engaging communities and students through our outreach programs. Diversity and inclusion sit at the heart of our mission, passionately committed to the purpose that the richly varied population of Los Angeles sees itself on our stage.

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Hollywood’s Fountain Theatre: The Tiny Theatre That Could Sylvie Drake · Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 When Stephen Sachs was a student at Agoura High, he won a national high school writing award and was offered several writing scholarships. He turned them all down. Why? “I wanted to be an actor,” he answered a bit sheepishly. He became one in the 1980s, but it’s the old story. As reality set in, he began to direct, write plays and help run theatre companies. He was a manager at Ensemble Studio Theatre, worked behind the scenes at Stages in Hollywood, and with Joan Stein and Suzie Dietz at the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills. Until he got a phone call “out of the blue” from Deborah Lawlor, another independent theatre producer. Lawlor had met Sachs at Stages when she rented space there, and was impressed by him. While recuperating from a serious auto accident in New York, she decided that, if she survived, she would do what she’d always wanted: have her own theatre. She called Sachs and asked him to run it with her. That was 1990. You might say that the rest is history, but not so fast… “I was just starting to develop as a playwright and director,” Sachs said. “Deborah had a dance background. She was part of the avant-garde dance scene in New York in the 1960s and 70s. The Judson Dance Theater, Café Cino, the whole thing. Her idea was to create an artistic home for theatre and dance artists.” As a wise friend once told me, we tend to enter our lives through the back door.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE Love Story to Star Married Deaf Actors Troy Kotsur and Deanne Bray broadwayworld.com/los-angeles/article/ARRIVAL-DEPARTURE-Love-Story-to-Star-Married-Deaf-Actors-Troy-Kotsur-and- Deanne-Bray-20180614 June 14, 2018 by BWW News Desk Jun. 14, 2018 An unforgettable love story inspired by one of the most romantic movies of all time. Stephen Sachs directs Deaf actors Deanne Bray (Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, Heroes) and Troy Kotsur (title role in Cyrano at the Fountain, Big River on Broadway) in Sachs' newest play, inspired by the screenplay for Noël Coward's Brief Encounter. The world premiere of Arrival & Departure will open on July 14 and continue through September 30 at the Fountain Theatre. The cast also features hearing actors Jessica Jade Andres, Adam Burch,Brian Robert Burns, Shon Fuller, Kyra Kotsur, Aurelia Myersand Stasha Surdyke. In Sachs' new spin on the classic 1945 British film, a Deaf man (Kotsur) and a hard-of-hearing woman (Bray), two married strangers, meet accidentally in a New York City subway station. As their casual friendship develops into something deeper, each is forced to confront how their simmering relationship could forever change their lives and the lives of those they love. "A train station is a place of transition, a place people go when they're on their way to someplace else," notes Sachs. "'Arrival & Departure' is not only a travel term. It expresses the journey of change that the people in this play are experiencing. What happens when you find your soul mate, but the circumstances of life get in the way?" Kostsur and Bray are married in real life, and Sachs wrote the play with them in mind.
