They extend southward into Colorado. Adapted from maps by U. S. Geological Survey. INTRODUCTION 617 broad plateau which varies from 9,000 to 10,000 feet in elevation and is intrenched by canyons. The plateau, partly margined by fault-line scarps, is nearly surrounded by a broad, terraced plain that has been eroded from outcrops of Cretaceous shales by streams and wind. In spite of its ready accessibility, this interesting range has been strangely neglected by geologists until the last decade. In 1868 Hague2 made a reconnaissance, noted the general character and distribution of the rocks, and offered a tentative interpretation of the internal structure. Yan Hise3 crossed the range on horseback in three days in 1889 and thereby added some further information regarding the pre-Cambrian rocks. Subsequently the range-was visited from time to time by Wilbur C. Knight and his son, S. H. Knight, and perhaps by other geologists; but no detailed work seems to have been attempted and the results of such examinations do not appear to have been published. In 1917 the writer, assisted by H. F. Crooks, then a student of the University of Illinois, devoted six weeks to a survey of the pre-Cambrian rocks in the central part of the range. During a part of the season he also had the company of F. M. Van Tuyl and S. H. Knight. The World War interrupted this work, and Mr. Crooks went to France as a soldier a few months later. The writer presented jan outline of the results at the Saint Louis meeting of the Geological Society, but never submitted the paper for publication because he felt the need of more field-work. A t the time, it was hoped that Mr. Crooks would be able to return and complete the study himself, but that hope was never realized. Again, in the summer of 1925, assisted by A. L. Crawford, the writer devoted a month to reexamination of the same district, but the unprece­ dented rainy season so reduced the available time that certain outlying parts of the district, such as French Creek and Medicine Bow River canyons, were not reached. During the same season J. F. Kemp, in com­ pany with S. H. Knight and students from the University of Wyoming, spent some weeks on the eastern side of the range, and J. J. Runner, assisted by students from the University of Iowa, made a detailed study of the pre-Cambrian rocks at the request of the State Geologist of Wyo­ ming. Aside from the brief abstract4 of the paper read by the present writer at the Saint Louis meeting of the Society in 1917, none of the results of any of these explorations have as yet been published. 2 Arnold Hague: U. For greater detail the reader is referred to the contour map of the Medicine Bow Quadrangle published by the U. S. Geological Survey. Thus far only a few of the more important topographic features of the range have been definitely named. Sheep herders, prospectors, and the rangers of the Forest Service have until recently been the only inhab­ itants of the plateau. Scarcely any of the mountain summits—not even the high eastern summit of the Snowy Eange—have names that are in current use. Likewise, of the 160 or more glacial lakes distributed over the surface of the Medicine Bow plateau, only a few of the largest or most accessible have been named. U ntil recently, access to the district, was chiefly by trails and a few very poor roads over which wagons could be taken with difficulty. In .1925, however, a good automobile road was completed from Centennial to Brooklyn Lake, and thence southwestward across the range to Brush Creek and Saratoga. There is also a passable road for automobiles to Sand Lake by way of Rock Creek. As the district is rather generally forest-covered, affording attraction for fishermen and a refuge from the torrid plains of the Central States, its use each year as a summer playground is increasing rapidly.     Aerial Survey Highlights for Colorado 2014 Aerial detection surveys of tree killing or damaging insects and diseases are conducted annually over Colorado’s forest lands. This is a cooperative effort between the US Forest Service and the Colorado State Forest Service. In 2014, 28 million acres were surveyed by 7 trained federal and state surveyors. Highlights of the survey by damage agent are reported below. In 2014, all reported agents are insects that kill and/or defoliate trees. This report includes only forest damage that is visible from the air. Spruce Beetle • Since 1996, spruce beetle has affected approximately 1,397,000 acres to varying degrees in Colorado. • Spruce beetle activity was detected on 485,000 acres in Colorado in 2014. Of these, 253,000 acres are in areas not previously mapped as having spruce beetle activity (new acres). This epidemic continues to expand rapidly (Figures 1, 2). In some areas, the outbreak has moved through entire drainages in the course of one year. In the most heavily impacted drainages, nearly every mature spruce has been killed (Figure 3). • The spruce beetle epidemic is expanding most rapidly in southern Colorado’s Forests and impacts many thousands of acres. Areas affected are found from the La Garita Wilderness Area to north of Cottonwood Pass, the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, as well as south to the Colorado border and into New Mexico. Aerial survey in south central Colorado showed spruce beetle epidemics expanded on the San Juan (26,000 new acres on 53,000 active acres), Rio Grande (78,000 new acres on 192,000 active acres), Gunnison (54,000 new acres on 79,000 active acres), and San Isabel (26,000 new acres on 31,000 active acres) National Forests.

Chapin 2New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, NM 87801 Abstract An apatite fission­track (AFT) partial annealing zone (PAZ) that developed during Late Cretaceous time provides a structural datum for addressing questions concerning the timing and magnitude of denudation, as well as the structural style of Laramide deformation, in the Front Range and Wet Mountains of Colorado. AFT cooling ages are also used to estimate the magnitude and sense of dis­ placement across faults and to differentiate between exhumation and fault­generated topography. AFT ages at low elevationX along the eastern margin of the southern Front Range between Golden and Colorado Springs are from 100 to 270 Ma, and the mean track lengths are short (10–12.5 µm). Old AFT ages (> 100 Ma) are also found along the western margin of the Front Range along the Elkhorn thrust fault. In contrast AFT ages of 45–75 Ma and relatively long mean track lengths (12.5–14 µm) are common in the interior of the range. The AFT ages generally decrease across northwest­trending faults toward the center of the range. The base of a fossil PAZ, which separates AFT cooling ages of 45– 70 Ma at low elevations from AFT ages > 100 Ma at higher elevations, is exposed on the south side of Pikes Peak, on Mt.

    100 YEARS OF CONSERVATION AND PUBLIC SERVICE ON THE ROUTT NATIONAL FOREST The Early History of Forest Reserves and National Forests that formed the Routt National Forest by Mary Peterson, Forest Supervisor 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of conservation and public service for the Forest Service nationally! The Routt National Forest has also been the result of a long and colorful history in the last 100+ years! Over the next year, I’d like to share with you some of this great history of the Routt National Forest in a series of articles to celebrate our Centennial. The Routt National Forest is comprised of the dramatic and beautiful Park, Gore, Medicine Bow, Elkhead, and Flat Tops Mountain Ranges. Fortunately for us today, the beauty and resources of these mountain ranges were recognized by early conservation leaders and were set aside as forest reserves, national forests, and a national park. Over the last 100+ years, the current Routt National Forest experienced several boundary and name changes. Following is a brief reconstruction of those changes. The current Routt National Forest was produced from the entire Park Range Forest Reserve and portions of the Medicine Bow, Sierra Madre, and White River Plateau Forest Reserves, established respectively in 1905, 1902, 1906, and 1891. By an Act of Congress approved March 4, 1907, the forest reserves were renamed “national forests”, thus resulting in the creation of the Park Range, Medicine Bow, Sierra Madre, and White River National Forests. Portions of the current Routt National Forest contained portions of these four "early" national forests as well as portions of the Hayden, Colorado, and Arapaho National Forests, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

    CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES, 1922. PENEPLAINS OF4 THE FRONT RANGE AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, COLORADO. By Wnxis T. LEE. PURPOSE OF THE PAPER. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to some of the major surface features in the Rocky Mountain National Park and to point out their probable correlation with similar features in neigh­ boring regions. The observations on which the paper is based were made in the summer of 1916, during an investigation in which other work demanded first consideration. This paper may therefore be considered a by-product. For the same reason many of the observa­ tions were not followed to conclusions, yet the data obtained seem to be sufficient to establish a certain order of events, the recognition of which may be of assistance in working out in detail the geologic and geographic history of the Rocky Mountain region. TWO CYCLES OF EROSION PREVIOUSLY RECOGNIZED. In an account of the general geology of the Georgetown quad­ rangle, Colo.j Ball x describes three distinct types of land forms " an old, mature mountainous upland; younger V-shaped valleys in­ cised in this upland; and glacial cirques developed at the heads of some of the streams, passing downward into U-shaped valleys." Ball describes the mountainous upland as consisting of highlands of rounded or gently sloping tops which are remnants of an ancient peneplain or old surface of erosion. Most of these remnants in the Georgetown quadrangle lie above an altitude of 11,500 feet. On thig old peneplain there were many monadnocks, some of which are now recognizable as the summits of the highest mountains.
