Mindanao Mission Academy

Honor Jesreel Mercader Marchie Mercader Mindanao Mission Academy (MMA) is a private secondary institution operated by the North-Central Mindanao Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Established on July 14, 1947, it is the oldest Adventist high school in the Southern Philippines, and the fifth-oldest in the entire Philippines.1 Since its founding, Mindanao Mission Academy has faithfully served the needs of Adventist education among the constituents of Northern Mindanao, especially the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Lanao Del Norte. It offers a program of study geared towards the development of the physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions of life in fulfillment of its philosophy, mission, and vision. It also offers a complete secondary education with specialized tracks in the senior high school curriculum, namely: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM).2 Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the school has registered an enrolment of 876 students in 2020, the highest enrolment in history.3 Developments that Led to the Establishment of the School On July 1, 1946, the Mindanao Mission opened an elementary school called the Mindanao Central School at Cagayan de Oro. Because of this large enrolment, mission officials voted on May 25, 1947, to establish an academy in the Mindanao Mission and the present 20-hectare lot along the national highway of Poblacion Manticao, Misamis Oriental, Philippines, was purchased.4 The site was acquired through the untiring efforts of the administrative committee of the then-Mindanao Mission (which later became South Philippine Union Conference) under the leadership of the late Pastor Apolonio Somoso, the president of Mindanao Mission and also chairman of the Academy board. -

Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer
Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b). -

It Is Written
John Bradshaw, speaker-director. Photo from ItIsWritten.com It is Written GREG HUDSON Greg Hudson, D.Min. (Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan), is the senior pastor of the Georgia-Cumberland Academy church in Calhoun, Georgia. He has worked as a registered nurse, and served as a pastor and academy chaplain in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Georgia. It Is Written, a Seventh-day Adventist television ministry founded by George Vandeman, began a weekly broadcast in selected American cities in 1956 and has since extended its reach throughout the world. The first religious television program to broadcast in color, It Is Written has innovated methods of using mass media technologies to augment local evangelism throughout its history. The Emergence of Adventist Television Ministry (1939-1955) The Adventist church became involved in television ministry in 1949, a decade after the televising of the New York World’s Fair in 1939 demonstrated the potential of this new medium.1 After the end of World War II in 1945, as more and more Americans acquired television sets, Adventists saw both its dangers as an immoral influence and its great potential in reaching large numbers of people with the message of Jesus.2 The success demonstrated by the Voice of Prophecy radio broadcast, helped prepare Adventists to recognize the evangelistic potential of modern media. R. H. Libby, J. L. Tucker, and W. A. Fagal pioneered the Adventist use of television as a means of evangelism. On the west coast Tucker started airing The Quiet Hour in 1949.3 In November of that same year, R. H. Libby started airing A Faith to Live By in Baltimore, generating much interest and hundreds of Bible studies, despite working with no budget, no music director, and no musicians.4 Soon another program, Heralds of Hope, with evangelist Robert L. -
Chronology of Seventh-Day Adventist Education: 1872-1972
CII818L8tl or SIYIITI·Ill IIYIITIST IIUCITIGI CENTURY OF ADVENTIST EDUCATION 1872 - 1972 ·,; Compiled by Walton J. Brown, Ph.D. Department of Education, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists ·t. 6840 Eastern Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20012 i/ .I Foreword In anticipation of the education centennial in 1972 and the publication of a Seventh-day Adventist chronology of education, the General Conference Department of Education started to make inquiries of the world field for historical facts and statistics regarding the various facets of the church program in education. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date. -
