I’m fairly certain you are parched and thirsty for some juicy reading after a year of analyzing speeches and arguments, so let us jump right in. After months of deliberation and careful consideration, I have chosen several pieces from as far back as 429 BC Athens, to 1200 AD Scotland, venturing on to Africa 1800s, and finishing up in 20th century Chicago. Grab your literary passport and join me as we meet various tragic heroes and discover their tragic flaws and tragic mistakes. You will learn the difference between an Aristotelian tragic hero and a Shakespearean tragic hero, not to mention gain a whole bunch of insight into the human condition and learn some ancient Greek in the process. I made sure each piece is available in PDF online. If you choose to use the online documents, be certain you are able to annotate and have quick access to the annotated text for class discussions. The only AP 4 summer writing you will do is five reading record cards. Four of your reading record cards could include all of the required summer reading pieces. It is my expectation that you earnestly read, annotate, and ponder each of the required pieces and be ready to launch into discussion after your summer reading exam. Heavily annotated notes on the four attached tragic hero articles and your handwritten reading record cards will count as one major grade and are due Thursday, August 15, by 3:00 pm. The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults Volume 8, No.1: July 2017 www.yalsa.ala.org/jrlya Dreaming in Color: Identifying Race and Ethnicity in YA Speculative Fiction Reviews Jewel Davis, Belk Library and Information Commons, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC Abstract Speculative fiction is a popular YA genre that has shown a lack of diversity through the years. With the most recent call for diverse youth literature, librarians and youth advocates are in need of authentic diverse speculative fiction titles to promote. This study analyzed 2,994 reviews for YA speculative fiction published between 2010 and 2015, and identified 380 titles containing racially or ethnically diverse major characters. This study reports on what racial and ethnic diversity is present in current published YA speculative fiction and addresses issues found with racial and ethnic identification in two major review sources. The data presented and calls to action included can be used to continue the discussion of authentic diverse representation in YA speculative fiction. Introduction Speculative fiction takes readers on adventures exploring imaginary worlds and ideas not yet possible in our reality. It is a genre that pushes our considerations of and answers to “What if?” to their maximum. It is a genre that creates the impossible through magic and technology, explains the peculiar using creatures from myths and legends, and chills the bones with horrors from the dark night. Through their craft, authors build worlds unlike our own that nevertheless reflect our society and human nature, mirror our fears and fantasies, and interpret our dreams and desires. -

This study presents an alternative approach to the novels of Franz Kafka through demonstrating that the Kafkan protagonist may be conceptualized in terms of mythic arche- types: the knight errant and the pharmakos. These complementary yet contending personalities animate the Kafkan victim-hero and account for his paradoxical nature. The widely varying fates of Karl Rossmann, Joseph K., and K. are foreshadowed and partially explained by their simultaneous kinship and uniqueness. Allusion A brief, often implicit and indirect reference within a literary text to something outside the text, whether another text (e.g. the Bible, a myth, another literary work, a painting, or a piece of music) or any imaginary or historical person, place, or thing. Ambiguity When we are involved in interpretation—figuring out what different elements in a story “mean”—we are responding to a work’s ambiguity. This means that the work is open to several simultaneous interpretations. Language, especially when manipulated artistically, can communicate more than one meaning, encouraging our interpretations. Antagonist A character or a nonhuman force that opposes, or is in conflict with, the protagonist. Anticlimax An event or series of events usually at the end of a narrative that contrast with the tension building up before. Antihero A protagonist who is in one way or another the very opposite of a traditional hero. Instead of being courageous and determined, for instance, an antihero might be timid, hypersensitive, and indecisive to the point of paralysis. Antiheroes are especially common in modern literary works. Archetype A character, ritual, symbol, or plot pattern that recurs in the myth and literature of many cultures; examples include the scapegoat or trickster (character type), the rite of passage (ritual), and the quest or descent into the underworld (plot pattern). -

Marquez used magical techniques to describe the tortuous and legendary experiences of several generations of the Buendia family in the small town. Through the refraction of the magical realm, it indirectly reflects the history of Latin America and the cruel real life, and expresses people's desire for independence and stability. Compared with other Western literary schools, magic realism is one of the literary schools that have a profound influence on the development of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. This article mainly analyzes the magical beauty of One Hundred Years of Solitude and its influence on Chinese literature through magic realism. Dr. Hallett ELEMENTS OF FICTION – NARRATOR / NARRATIVE VOICE Fundamental Literary Terms that Indentify Components of Narratives “Fiction” is defined as any imaginative re-creation of life in prose narrative form. All fiction is a falsehood of sorts because it relates events that never actually happened to people (characters) who never existed, at least not in the manner portrayed in the stories. However, fiction writers aim at creating “legitimate untruths,” since they seek to demonstrate meaningful insights into the human condition. Therefore, fiction is “untrue” in the absolute sense, but true in the universal sense. Critical Thinking – analysis of any work of literature – requires a thorough investigation of the “who, where, when, what, why, etc.” of the work. Narrator / Narrative Voice Guiding Question: Who is telling the story? …What is the … Narrative Point of View is the perspective from which the events in the story are observed and recounted. To determine the point of view, identify who is telling the story, that is, the viewer through whose eyes the readers see the action (the narrator). Consider these aspects: A. Pronoun p-o-v: First (I, We)/Second (You)/Third Person narrator (He, She, It, They] B. Narrator’s degree of Omniscience [Full, Limited, Partial, None]* C. Narrator’s degree of Objectivity [Complete, None, Some (Editorial?), Ironic]* D.
