  • Platinum, Silver- Platinum, and Palladium Prints
Noble Metals for the Early Modern Era: Platinum, Silver- Platinum, and Palladium Prints Constance Mc Cabe Histories of photography usually emphasize the photogra- phers’ command of the camera and the resulting pictures while offering little insight into the extensive chemical and technical artistry performed in studios and darkrooms. Research into the materials and methods behind photo- graphic prints, however, can shed light on the aesthetic goals of the photographers and help to determine which properties are the result of artistic decisions and which might be the natural effects of aging. By studying the array of platinum, silver- platinum, and palladium prints in the Thomas Walther Collection, we are given an opportunity to appreciate how photographers in the early twentieth cen- tury manipulated materials and chemicals to achieve a quasi-modern aesthetic. The aesthetic benchmark for many photographers at the dawn of the twentieth century was the platinum print, extolled for its unparalleled artistic qualities and perma- nence. Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) and Clarence H. White (1871–1925), both highly influential photographers and lead- ers of Pictorialism, a movement championing photography as fine art, praised platinum as the ideal photographic medium for their exhibition prints. Their disciples contin- ued to test the medium for new and unusual effects, exploiting such curiosities as multiple exposures, tone reversal, and solarization, and exploring unconventional compositional elements and abstraction. Highly attuned to the technical craft of their work, they investigated myriad products and chemical modifications to achieve their artistic fig. 1 Alfred Stieglitz. From the Back Window at “291”. • The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

  • Edward Weston: the Photographer
Edward Weston: The Photographer and Friends We are so appreciative of the wonderful responses we have received on our “history of photography” email blasts! Thank you. Your comments were so positive that we will continue in this vein. We don’t know if the response was to Beaumont’s Martini recipe or the information about Ralph Steiner and Willard Van Dyke. Maybe both! Many of you told us that you were unaware of Willard and Ralph’s importance in the formative years of Documentary Film. Edward Weston Oceana, 1936 Willard was Edward Weston’s apprentice in 1928 and a co-founder of f64 in 1932. In 1935 Willard moved to New York to pursue his Documentary Film career. He served as cameraman on The River (1938) directed by Pare Lorentz, and in 1939 made The City with Ralph Steiner (which was in last weeks email). He produced and directed many films, mostly for television for the next 20 years before he began his Directorship of the Department of Film at the Museum of Modern Art in 1965. In 1983, during a break in The Friends of Photography f64 workshop, a video was made in Ansel Adam’s backyard with Beaumont Newhall and Ansel discussing Willard’s role in the founding of Group f64, and his life in both film and still photography. During that interview Willard stated, “The effects of the Depression were very disturbing to me. I felt anxious to promote change. He went on the say, “ I was young and impatient, and felt that the documentary film would more effectively communicate issues to more people then would still photography.” He went on to discuss with Beaumont and Ansel that he now had doubts about that decision.

INTRODUCTION With the opening of the exhibition Perceptions at the San Francisco Museum of Art1 on August 10, 1954, a decade of photography in San Francisco and the Bay Area was recognized and celebrated. Forty-six photographers exhibited in Perceptions. Among them were Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, and Minor White. Between 1946 and 1954, these highly influential photographers had given guidance and inspiration to the students of the new fine art photography program at the California School of Fine Arts (renamed the San Francisco Art Institute in 1961). “Distinguished students”2 of these renowned photographers exhibited their photographs in Perceptions as well. Ten of those students are the subject of this catalogue. John Bertolino Nata Piaskowski Zoe [Lowenthal] Brown F. W. Quandt, Jr. Benjamen Chinn Donald Ross Bob Hollingsworth Charles Wong Gene Petersen Harold Zegart A half-century after the exhibition is not too soon to rediscover these photographers. Today their photographs are as visually and psychologically penetrating, as fresh, vibrant, intelligent and witty as they were fifty years ago.
