Fortkamp This work of fiction depicts two families in sub/rural America, largely focusing on the teenage lifestyle and the problems faced by the modern-age single-parent family unit. The plot reveals the disparity between young love and the post-love state ushered in by divorce. Berger Pilgrim State The phone startled Nate at that time of evening when Adel should have been clumping up the steps to their apartment as she returned from Norm’s Diner, and he knew without answering that something terrible had happened. His daughter’s behavior had taken a decidedly downward turn. When she responded out loud to the imaginary voices she heard, her tone had become more troubled. Just the night before Adel had suddenly begun to bang her shoe on the inside of her bedroom door, crying “Keep away! Keep away!” Nate had managed to calm her by inviting her to listen to the radio with him and promising to whip up a sandwich. Adel tenta- tively emerged from her room in a large bathrobe pulled loosely around her, sporting a Brooklyn Dodgers cap yanked tightly over her head, and plopped herself in her usual chair. Nate fiddled with the dial until he found a rerun of Gunsmoke and immediately worried when he realized it involved a senseless murder. He remembered the episode: The Killer. Nate feared that the shootings in the story would reawaken the ghosts that Adel had been fighting, but she listened without affect, the inner noises apparently stilled. If anything, the confident, deep voice of William Con- rad playing Marshal Matt Dillon helped to calm her. She ate the promised sandwich, but when the program ended she returned to her room, refus- ing to accept Nate’s effort to talk about whatever had been disturbing her. “Is that you Adel?” asked Nate, grabbing the telephone.

Officer Li could smell it immediately—through the baby’s screaming, the beeping of Sam’s video game, Matt and Jody’s fight—he could taste it right away. Mrs. Liza Martin’s hands scratched at the glove compartment three times before she finally got it open. Officer Li tapped his boots against the freshly smoothed pavement. Mrs. Martin handed him the papers along with the license. She tried to cover up the picture—it was taken before she got her new chin. Officer Li moved Mrs. Martin’s thumb. "Okay, you want to step out of the car, ma’am." Mrs. Martin stepped out of the giant white mini-van, her carpool children continually yelling at the top of their lungs. She was relieved that she decided against putting her hair in curlers that day. Mrs. Lindsey McArthur slowly drove by and watched as Mrs. Martin put her finger to her nose. "Morning, Liza," Mrs. McArthur said amongst her daughter’s cries, staring at Officer Li’s badge, "morning, Officer." Mrs. Martin groaned as Lindsey drove away. Lindsey would be on time and Mrs. Martin would be late, yet again. Most importantly, Mrs. Martin would miss the beginning of the Room Mothers’ meeting—one in which all of the stay-at-home fathers and soccer-moms would gather together plotting the latest President’s Day celebration and Halloween bash.
