  • The VIRTUAL 46Th Annual Alaska Folk Festival
The VIRTUAL 46th Annual Alaska Folk Festival April 5-11, 2021 It gives me tremendous pleasure to say these words that we have all been waiting far too long to hear -- Welcome to the 46th Annual Alaska Folk Festival! After the disappointment of cancelling the 2020 festival, and when it became clear that large gatherings would not be happen- ing for a long time, our all-volunteer board decided to forego the normal 5 month hiatus to keep working to develop a virtual Folk Festival. The lineup and variety of programming that came together far exceeded my expectations of what was possible, and I could not be more proud to be a part of this amazing group of volunteers. One of the silver linings of the pandemic was seeing how folk music and musicians immediately responded to the abrupt can- cellation of live musical performances by finding new and innovative ways to keep the music going. Online performances, workshops and festivals began sprouting up like fireweed shoots after a forest fire. This provided great hope and inspiration for us at the Alaska Folk Festival that the music would continue – no matter what! One striking example of the resilience of folk music came through the Quarantine Happy Hour group. Started in early April, 2020 by Oregon musicians Gabrielle Macrae and Barry Southern (The Horsenecks), this Facebook group began as a live feed for musicians to perform during the height of the pandemic lockdown. One year and twenty thousand followers later, Quaran- tine Happy Hour has featured a live performance every single night since it began! As great friends of the AFF, Gabrielle and Barry graciously offered to lend their platform to help us bring live musical performances to you during this year’s festival.

‘BEFORE GOOGLE AND THE INTERNET... THERE WAS DAVID BIEBER.’ - CARTER ALAN, DJ/Music Director/author David Bieber amidst a few of his many artifacts at the Verb Hotel. Save The Stuff You Love! is the de facto mantra of the David Bieber Archives. And that’s what David Bieber has been doing his whole life. Now, after 35 years in cold storage, the always-growing collection, a vast stockpile of media, music, film and pop culture artifacts, is finally seeing the light of day. The Archives has the goods, preserving more than 1,000,000 pieces of memorabilia, including: vinyl albums, 45s, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks, reel-to-reels, videos, DVDs, comics, posters, record store and movie theatre displays, promo items, books, magazines, newspapers, fanzines, photos, press kits, autographs, political banners, artwork, toys and games, commemorative bottles and cans, instruments, TVs, stereos, radios, telephones, assorted electronics, apparel, furniture, packaging, signage, and miscellaneous ephemera. From early-20th century to present day, vintage to modern, common to ultra rare, there’s nothing quite like it. As David puts it, the collection is meant to represent “a cultural moment that actually existed in time, and for the most part was discarded. It tells the story of what has happened.” ‘David’s collection is a testament to the fact that the passage of time renders extraordinary value to ordinary things.’ - BETTY FULTON, International Antiquarian Book Fair It took twelve tractor trailer trucks to bring the David Bieber Archives to its current location at the Norwood Space Center, a converted mill complex situated between Boston and Providence.

  • ROVING GAMBLER O (Sounds As E) 1 Track (Traditional) 1 This Is a Quite Widespread Old Song That Shares Roots with “The Cuckoo” and “Jack of Diamonds” Songs
D Disc ROVING GAMBLER o (Sounds as E) 1 Track (Traditional) 1 This is a quite widespread old song that shares roots with “The Cuckoo” and “Jack of Diamonds” songs. It was conspicuously absent from the 1960 Key E Alan Lomax collection “Folk Songs of North America.” It seems to have Chords spread around after a recording by cowboy singer Carson Robison in the E A 1930’s, and as a result of being sung by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston 1 chord Guitar Key D and that infl uential clique of folk music trendsetters. Simon & Garfunkel G Tuning Standard even recorded it for their best-selling 1966 album “Sounds of Silence,” but it (Sounds as A) was not released until 2001. Our version resembles the earliest recording Capo “Drop E” by Kelly Harrell in 1925. Bob Dylan has played the song for decades, and Singer Harvey wrote some nice new verses to it you might try. He opened his concert Guitar Harvey with it on his return to the Newport Folk Festival in 2003, 40 years after his famous and quite controversial performance there with a rock band. RECORDINGS GUITAR TIPS 4 chord Kelly Harrell (1925), Ernest In the old versions they don’t repeat the last line of the verses as Stoneman, Wade Mainer, Cisco a refrain. You most often hear it done now in bluegrass, with an Houston, Woody Guthrie, Lonnie added relative (6th scale degree) minor chord in the repeat line. Chord Progression Donegan, Jim Reeves, Tennessee (You would need a barre chord Bm here.) I like the non-chordal Verse: Ernie Ford, Burl Ives, Hedy West, note you get when you sing the 6th against the 4 chord on the 1 1 1 1 Bob Dylan, Mac Wiseman, New repeat line.
