He spoke one day to the Daughters of Charity of Sr. Marie-Joseph from Etampes, one of the first sisters, and said of her: “This good daughter may be called a martyr of charity. Do you think that the only martyrs are those who spill their blood for the faith? For example, those daughters who went to find the queen, that is a martyrdom; for, while they did not die, they were exposed to the danger of death, and they did that willingly for the love of God; like so many good Daughters who have given their lives in the service of the poor, that is a martyrdom.” 1 Sr Rosalie was of that kind.

  • Five Faces of Rosalie Rendu Contents
Five Faces of Rosalie Rendu Robert P. Maloney, CM at the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity, Paris, France, March 25, 2003 Rosalie Rendu was an extraordinary woman. Even though many of the biographies written about her are poor in quality.[1]] Rosalie’s energy, creativity, fidelity, courage shine out in the accounts of those who knew her.[2] Long before her death she had become famous. An immense crowd, estimated at 40-50 thousand people, from all strata of society flocked to her funeral on February 9, 1856. As we look forward to her beatification, I think of Shakespeare’s eloquent words: When she shall die, Take her and cut her out in little stars, And she will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night...[3] The Church beatifies and canonizes men and women precisely for that reason: that they might shine out like stars for us, that in the midst of darkness we might see, in their example, what it really means to be holy. Saints make holiness real, concrete. So, let me present to you today five faces of Rosalie Rendu. Contents 1 1. Prodigious Worker and Organizer 2 2. Local Superior 3 3. Intrepid Woman 4 4. By her life, her works, her spirituality, she embodied this vision painted by the saint of charity; you could say that she was the perfect realisation of what he taught: “Whoever gives her life for God may be deemed a martyr. • Rosalie Rendu: the Person Behind the Actions
from Chapters 1-2 of Sister Rosalie Rendu: Rosalie Rendu: A Daughter of Charity On Fire with Love for the The Person Behind the Actions Poor by Louise Sullivan, D.C. Brief Bio • Blessed Rosalie Rendu was born in the Jura Mountains, near the Swiss border in the current department of Ain, in 1786. At 15 she joined the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, attracted by their charity and spirit of service. • For 54 years, from her novitiate until her death, she dedicated herself to serving the poor in the Mouffetard, the most deprived district of Paris. A soul of continual prayer, she reportedly said: "Never have I prayed so well as in the street." • The numerous texts that have appeared since her death portray her heroic deeds on the barricades during the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, or her risking her own life at the bedside of the sick during the cholera epidemics of 1832, 1849, and 1854. They also recount in detail the great works that she founded for those who were poor, or that a street in Paris was named after her. Images from St. Vincent de Paul Image Archive Rediscovering the Secret of Sister Rosalie • As with St. Vincent and St. Louise, or in studying the life of any saint, there is the danger of losing the person behind the actions, of being so dazzled by the magnitude of their achievements that the spiritual and human motor that drove them disappears. Such has often been the case with Sister Rosalie. • Sister Rosalie, the woman, is far more and far less than the sum of her actions.

  • Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 February 2018
St Peter’s Church, Phibsborough Parish Newsletter Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 February 2018 Jesus the Healer In today’s gospel we read about Jesus’ first healing in Mark’s Gospel. Jesus hears of the illness of the mother of Simon’s wife and goes to her. Due to the purity laws of his time this scene would have been considered controversial. His first healing is of a woman and we are told that he touches her, raises her up; he completely restores her to health. Many of his actions here would be considered taboo. The ‘whole city’ was crowded around the door as people wanted to also be healed. What a commotion! Jesus, very early on in his ministry, is clearly a very popular, attractive figure. Jesus is the healer. We might ask ourselves today: who do we know who is in need of healing of any kind? This week, how can we reach out to them? Another important aspect of this story is that Jesus does not remain comfortable in this house. He keeps moving, keeps going outward. This requires so much energy and an outpouring of love for those in need. Jesus shows us in today’s gospel what it takes to stay connected, to re-energise ourselves for our various tasks: quiet time and space for real encounter with God. Even then, the people hunted for him. ‘Everyone is searching for you’, and still today, everyone is searching. It is up to all of us to help those on this journey, the seekers, the lost and those in need of healing.

WHO WERE POOR Just as it is in the case of Vincent de Paul and his collaborator, Louise de Marillac, it is easy to lose the person behind the amazing catalogue of Sister Rosalie's accomplishments in the service of those who were poor. The mystic tends to disappear behind the person of action. Apostolic zeal clouds the examination of other equally important qualities and virtues. Moreover, for the founders of the Daughters of Charity, achieving the necessary balance between prayer and action, within the context of consecrated life lived in community, was a constant challenge, albeit a struggle, because of the crushing needs of those whom they were called upon to serve. Yet attaining this balance was the essential quality of their vocation. Late in her life, Louise de Marillac wrote a somewhat disconcerting letter in this regard to the early sisters who shared her vocation of service.

She is most often viewed as a heroine of nearly mythical proportions. Her biographers portray her standing on the barricades during the fury of the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. Moreover, not only is she seen defying death in the streets of Paris but also at the bedside of victims of the cholera epidemics that wreaked havoc in the Mouffetard area in 1832, 1849, and 1854. This image of the heroine is accurate. We do not dispute it. The problem lies not in presenting this reality but in limiting Sister Rosalie's life to these actions, however extraordinary they may be. Given Sister Rosalie's character and up-bringing, it is not surprising that she reacted to events as she did. Born in 1786, she was not yet three-years-of-age when the Bastille was stormed and the Revolution of 1789, known simply as "THE French Revolution," began.

16th President General International Paris, 31 January 2021 CIRCULAR LETTER TO MY DEAR FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE CONFERENCES OF THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL AROUND THE WORLD 2021 - International Year of JULES DEVAUX 1. Introduction Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! My dear members of Saint Vincent de Paul Conferences around the world, I first wish to ask for the abundant blessings of Our Lord Jesus Christ on you, and for our Blessed Lady to be with everyone, particularly those in need whom our Society helps, whether in special works or in Conferences. I am very pleased to be writing to you all again, sisters and brothers in the Vincentian Conferences around the world, for the sixth time since I was elected as 16th President General of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, with this Circular Letter for 2021. It has been the custom since 1841 for the Presidents General of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul to write Circular Letters addressed directly to the members, covering important matters on the Vincentian agenda, or for guidance to improve the work of the Conferences, special works and Councils. The Letters of the Presidents General are, it seems, very important training materials for all our members. 1.1. 2020 has truly been a year like no other This past year has been a time which will be marked out in the history of humanity as one of the worst- ever health crises, affecting millions of lives, as well as leading to countless negative consequences for the economy of countries and of the whole world, increasing poverty, unemployment and vulnerability in society.

Let us pause and open ourselves to the presence of God Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. O God, by the light of the Holy Spirit, teach the hearts of the faithful and grant that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolation. Through Christ Our Lord. Prayer for the Church and all Vincentians Compassionate God, we pray for our Church, especially our Pope, Bishops, Priests and Religious. May their leadership strengthen and nourish our Vincentian spirit. We pray for all members of the Vincentian family throughout the world, especially in those countries with which we are twinned. We pray that like Saint Vincent de Paul, we are open to the presence of Christ in the poor and are always willing to share our spirit and resources. Prayer for the Society Spirit Lord Jesus, we share in the faith and courage of our founders, especially Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, Blessed Rosalie Rendu, Fr Gerald Ward and Captain Charles O’Neill. May their spirit be renewed in the Society of today. May we be open to the needs of those suffering poverty and injustice, remaining receptive to the grace of the Holy Spirit. We pray that we build a sense of community wherever our members are gathered. Prayer for Reconciliation Holy Spirit, we pray that the St Vincent de Paul Society be a place in which the First Peoples of Australia are welcomed and deeply respected.

Robert Maloney, CM, it is available here: Five Faces of Rosalie Rendu Additional resources available at VinFormation --- Rosalie Rendu DC Rosalie Rendu Birth September 9, 1786 Death February 7, 1856 Birthplace Confort France Beatified November 9, 2003 Canonized Memorial February 7 Jeanne Marie Rendu was born 9 September 1786 at Confort, a district of Gex in the Jura Mountains. She was the eldest of four girls. Her parents, simple living mountain people and small property owners, enjoyed a certain affluence and true respect throughout the area. Jeanne Marie was baptized the day she was born in the parish church of Lancrans. Her Godfather by proxy was Jacques Emery, a family friend and future Superior General of the Sulpicians in Paris. Jeanne Marie Rendu was three years old when the Revolution broke out in France. From 1790 it was compulsory for the clergy to take an oath of support for the civil Constitution. Numerous priests, faithful to the Church, refused to take this oath. They were chased from their parishes, some were put to death and others had to hide to escape their pursuers. The Rendu family home became a refuge for these priests. The Bishop of Annecy found asylum under the assumed name of Pierre. Jeanne Marie was fascinated by this hired hand who was treated better than the others. One night, she discovered that he was celebrating Mass. She was offended that she had not been told the truth.
