Func- tioning much like an “arts district,” The ReUse District is the first of its kind in the nation. The ReUse District’s mission is to “increase the appreciation and accessibility of reused materials in the 7th Ward, Bywater, Marigny, St. Claude, and St. Roch neighborhoods of New Orleans.” By working together to promote reuse, The ReUse District and its participating businesses and organizations foster a new, environmentally responsible form of consumer- ism. While the District has an environmental mission to encourage all forms of reuse, especially since the city has no formal municipal recycling program, it also has an economic mission. The ReUse District hopes to help smaller businesses and organizations market themselves to the greater New Orleans community and to attract more reuse businesses and organiza- tions to these five neighborhoods, especially to the 7th Ward, St. Claude, and St. Roch neighborhoods where the commercial sector is struggling. As a creative and environmentally responsible economic revitalization effort, The ReUse District hopes to become a voice for these smaller reuse businesses. The founding members of The ReUse District have canvassed reuse businesses and organizations since November, 2009 to encourage organizations to
