Kathy Perini The Temple City Unified school board appointed two consult- ants to share the duties of superintendent as it begins its search for a replacement for Kathy Perini. The school board voted in closed session May 23 to appoint Mark Skvarna and Richard Tauer, consultants from Sacramento-based Capitol Advisors Group, to serve as interim co-superintendents as the district begins searching for a successor to Perini. District staff has yet to complete its contract with Capitol Advi- sors Group, so details about its length and cost to the district are not yet available, TCUSD spokeswoman Katherine Healey said. The contract is expected to be fully drafted and presented to the board for approval in June. The board voted in March to extend Perini’s contract, then placed her on paid administrative leave April 19 pending an investigation into “financial irregularities,” board President Larry Marston an- nounced at that meeting. When the board returned to open session Wednesday night, Tauer addressed the handful of residents still in attendance, saying his and Skvarna’s presence will allow acting superintendent Marianne Sarrail to return to her responsibilities as chief business official. “Right now, the district is going through some really tough times, the board is going through difficult times, same for the staff, and it reverberates throughout the whole district,” Tauer said at the May 23 meeting. “We intend to work as quickly as possible, be as visible as pos- sible and give messages that are authentic as we move into next stage for this district.” Tauer, who years ago served as principal of La Rosa Elementary in Temple City, last served as a super- intendent for Westminster School District in Orange County. In 2013, the Westminster school board placed Tauer on paid leave without explanation, and he resigned a month later. Former Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Mark Skvarna will serve as one of two interim super- intendents for the Temple City Uni- fied School District. Skvarna served as superinten- dent of the Baldwin Park Unified School District for 13 years until he retired in 2014. BY CHARLOTTE NIM Since 1986 when it was established by Carmen Rey, a guidance counselor at the time, Temple City High’s Peer Listener Program has helped hundreds of students cope with critical life issues. More than a mere extension of the school’s counseling department, “Peer Listen- ers” or “Red Shirts” consist of 9th-12th grade students trained to help other students cope with various physical and emotional concerns. In order to be part of the program, students must go through an application and interview. Once their training is completed, they are con- sidered ready to receive their red shirt and be fully utilized as a Peer Listener. Carrying the program motto, the 3 Cs: Commitment, Confidentiality, and Caring, the students must be completely honest, trustworthy, and dedicated in order to deal with the issues that come their way. Put simply, these four essential documents are: 1. Revocable Living Trust: Moves your property into the trust name to avoid probate court, a time-consuming and lengthy process, and allows you to choose your beneficiaries. 2. Pour-Over Will: Works with the above trust to ensure your wishes are fol- lowed. 3. Durable Power of Attorney: Specifies who you would want to make financial and property decisions for you should you become incapacitated and what powers you give to that person. 4. Advanced Health Care Directive: Specifies who you would want to make health decisions for you should you become incapacitated and what powers that person has (Do you want to stay on life support? Do you want to donate organs?). In gathering information for your first meeting, I ask my new clients to bring information on the following two aspects: 1. People: Who are your beneficiaries? Who do you want to be in charge once you pass or if you are incapacitated? 2. Things: Your assets. Please bring a list of all accounts: account type, account number, and institution information. If possible, clients should also bring grant deeds or quitclaim deeds for all real property owned. Although estate planning is not simple, with this basic understanding of the estate planning documents and what information is needed to begin the process, you are now far ahead of the average new estate planning client. BY MARILYN RANGEL Under the guidance of director Jason Hillegaart and his staff, the Temple City High School Drum Line recently competed in the Winter Guard International World Championship (WGI), in Day- ton, Ohio. After a grueling one-week competition, the 30-member Temple City High School Drum Line finished as follows: Quarterfinal Round - First place. Semi-Finals Round - Fifth place (earning a spot in the finals). Final Round - Ninth place overall in an international competi- tion – higher than any other school in this classification in the Western United States, making Temple City High School Drum Line first in the West. WGI is one of the largest and most competitive circuits in the United States with more than 64 schools competing in the Scho- lastic A category and more than 50 scholastic and independent teams in the federation. In other words, winning a spot in the top 10 is no easy feat and a remarkable testimony that only through hard work and dedica- tion by both students and instructors can true victory be achieved.
