Foreign-born students help create jobs for Tennessee and often provide the technological innovations that help drive economic growth. Many will serve as the next generation of entrepreneurs, scientists, and leaders in our state. A recent study by the Partnership for a New American Economy and the American Enterprise Institute found that for every 100 foreign-born graduates from a U.S. Master’s or PhD program who stay in America working in a STEM field, 262 additional jobs are created for American workers. In Tennessee, that can translate into a significant new growth -- since our share of foreign-born advance STEM degree holders working in STEM fields grew by 85 percent between 2000 and 2010.

    VOTE SCORECARD 115TH CONGRESS / FIRST SESSION Available at FRCAction.org/scorecard HHHHH U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES and U.S. SENATE Dear Voter and Friend of the Family, FRC Action presents our Vote Scorecard for 2017, the First Session of the 115th Congress. This scorecard contains a compilation of significant votes on federal legislation affecting family values that FRC Action either supported or opposed. These recorded votes span votes in the 2017 calendar year. As Republicans had greater control of the federal government under President Donald Trump, 2017 presented opportunities for the enactment of conservative, pro-life and pro-family legislation and the confirmation of pro-life judges and cabinet secretaries. In the U.S. Senate, FRC Action scored in favor of confirming Neil Gorsuch to be a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court to fill the seat Justice Antonin Scalia left vacant. FRC Action also scored in favor of effectively changing Senate rules to bypass Democratic filibuster on Supreme Court nominees, in the same way Senator Harry Reid did for lower-court nominees in 2013. FRC Action also scored in favor of confirming Jeff Sessions to be U.S. Attorney General, Tom Price to be HHS Secretary, and Amy Barrett to be to be U.S. Circuit Judge, after she was opposed by Democratic senators for her Christian faith. FRC Action also scored against an amendment to the budget to block Congress from repealing Obamacare abortion coverage subsidies or the HHS contraceptive mandate. In both chambers, FRC Action scored in favor of the first stand-alone pro-life bill to become law in 13 years: a resolu- tion of disapproval to overturn former President Barack Obama’s regulation that prevented states from redirecting Title X family planning funds away from abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood.

    Tennessee’s 2018 Politics October 5, 2017 In Tennessee politics, a non-election year fall season is usually a time of year when even the most ardent politicos shift their focus away from politics and turn their eyes to the gridiron or the changing leaves in the Great Smoky Mountains. However, the fall of 2017 has been quite different. 2018 Tennessee House of Representatives: It's an understatement to say that the landscape in the House will look dramatically different for 2019. Below, you will find a list of House members whose last session will be in 2018: Rep. David Alexander (R-Winchester) will not return and is planning to run for Mayor of Franklin County. Rep. Harry Brooks (R-Knoxville) will not return and he is planning to retire from politics. Rep. Brooks departure will open up the Chairmanship for the House Education Administration and Planning Committee. Rep. Jimmy Eldridge (R-Jackson) is strongly considering a 2019 run for Mayor of Jackson, but has not yet decided if he will run for re-election to his seat in 2018. When he ultimately departs, the Chairmanship for the House Consumer and Human Resources Committee would be up for grabs. Rep. Craig Fitzhugh (D-Ripley) will not return and he is running for the Democratic nomination in the 2018 Tennessee Governor's race against former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. Rep. Fitzhugh's departure will open up the position of House Democratic Leader. Rep. Brenda Gilmore (D-Nashville) will not return and she is running for the Democratic nomination for the Tennessee Senate District 19 seat currently held by Sen.

    Special Report Tennessee 2018 Primary Election Results Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Morning after Report: 2018 Primary Election On Thursday, August 2, 2018, Tennessee voters went to the polls to elect primary nominees for state and federal offices. For Tennessee’s business community, 2018 is a significant election cycle that will usher in a new era of leadership in Tennessee to the Governor’s office, the Tennessee General Assembly and a number of new congressional members. The Tennessee Chamber has been working to ensure this transition is smooth for business, meeting with candidates and talking to them about important business issues. It is crucially important that our new leaders work to maintain and enhance Tennessee’s business climate with continued focus on workforce development and a strong business policy climate for economic growth. Let’s look at the primary winners and begin to assess the general election matchups. Governor – After a total of eight years in office, term limited Governor Bill Haslam’s retirement spurred a vigorous multi-candidate primary race for both the Democratic and Republican nominations. Both primaries have been highly contested setting new records for campaign spending (over $51 million). Most attention has focused on high profile Republican candidates, who have spent the most and where the available polling data showed a tight race heading into Election Day. In the end political outsider Bill Lee decisively won the Republican nomination over former ECD Commissioner Randy Boyd, U.S. House member Diane Black and TN House Speaker Beth Harwell, respectively. In the Democratic primary former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean captured 75% of the vote and cruised to victory over State Representative Craig Fitzhugh.
