This was the reason for the Hungarians to present the Queen and the King castle Gödöllö. This gesture shows the enormous popularity of the royal couple. Castle Gödöllö (also called the “Hungarian Versailles”) has often been the sanctuary of the Queen Elisabeth. In the nearby situated Elisabeth Park, there is a memorial of Elisabeth and a memorial plaque shows her favorite place. Just 5 kilometers away from castle Gödöllö, the Lázár horse riding park in Domonyvölgy with riding- and dressage demonstration is situated, which reminiscent of the enthusiasm of the Empress and Queen for the equestrian sport. Our tip: A trip to Herend, in the oldest porcelain factory and biggest in the world, shows the noble porcelain pieces – which were also a great favorite of Emperor and King Franz Joseph. Enjoy your stay in Budapest, surrounded by numerous associations to the kingdom and fascinated by the loyalty and worship of the Hungarians to their Queen. ... a message from the Salzkammergut Salzkammergut Touristik GmbH A-4820 Bad Ischl, Götzstraße 12 T: +43 (0)6132/24 000-0 F: +43 (0)6132/24 000-44 E: [email protected] INCOMING REISEBÜRO www.salzkammergut.co.at INCOMING TRAVEL AGENCY FN 358406v / ATU66217319 Arrangement: 3 x overnight stay in Budapest with breakfast buffet 1 x privat, guided city walk in Budapest (4 hours) 1 x entrance in castle Gödöllö (against surcharge, payable on spot: audioguide) 1 x horse show and carriage drive at Lázár Equestiran park incl. lunch 1 x booklet Elisabeth – empress of Austria daily service hotline from 08:00 am – 06:00 pm (also on weekends) Local tax Rates per person and Arrangement in €: 15.04. – 30.04.21 30.04. – 01.07.21 01.07. – 01.09.21 01.09. – 31.10.21 Overnight in a dbl room 469,-- 514,-- ****hotel Continental or similar Rates for sgl room, for upgrades and for additional nights on request and subject to availability! © concret Werbeagentur We recommend travel cancellation insurance. INTRODUCTION The European Diploma for Protected Areas was awarded to the Wachau Protected Landscape in 1994 and renewed in 2009 along with the initial condition and 8 recommendations. For the next renewal an on-the-spot appraisal was undertaken in 2018. I visited the area from 9th to 11th September 2018. The visit was extremely well organised by the World Heritage Municipalities Wachau Association (Verein Welterbegemeiden Wachau) which is responsible for site management, in particular by the manager Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schimek. That was very important as the time for the visit was limited, unexpectedly the vintage started earlier, so it was really a success to assure presence of all key representatives at the site (Annex 1 - programme of visit). Representatives were all very competent and keen to help me to understand issues about the protected area. I would like to thank all organisers of the visit for the helpful, enthusiastic and very open assistance during the on-the-spot-appraisal mission, and all experts and representatives I met during these 3 days: Bgm.

  • Pietas Austriaca? the Imperial Legacy in Interwar and Postwar Austria
religions Article Pietas Austriaca? The Imperial Legacy in Interwar and Postwar Austria Dieter A. Binder ID Chair of Cultural Studies, Andrássy University, Pollack Mihály tér 3, 1088 Budapest, Hungary; [email protected] Received: 7 July 2017; Accepted: 21 August 2017; Published: 29 August 2017 Abstract: This paper aims to outline the specific Habsburg character of Austrian Catholicism through a study of Pietas Austriaca, the supposed Habsburg tradition of Catholic piety, and its role in the First and Second Austrian Republics. It analyzes the narrative of Austrian history presented by the Heldendenkmal, or Heroes’ Monument, which was erected in Vienna in 1934. Further, it argues that Pietas Austriaca was linked in the postwar period to a notion of Heimat (Home, Homeland) and served the needs of Austrian political Catholicism, which was seeking to recruit former National Socialists. Keywords: Habsburg; Austria; empire; Catholicism; Pietas Austriaca; Christian Social Party; Austrian People’s Party; Heimat; Heldendenkmal Political Catholicism utilised its commitment to the concept of Pietas Austriaca to define its political position towards both Social Democratic Austro-Marxism and National Socialism. After 1945, the Roman Catholic Church served as a vehicle for the denazification of former National Socialists. By creating the “Heimat”, it endeavoured to establish a common front against Social Democracy in order to implement a masked bourgeois bloc. Ultimately, this would to some extent explain the rise of the Austrian Freedom Party from 1986 on. “The Pietas Austriaca, i.e., Austrian piety—referring here to Austria as Casa d’Austria, i.e., the House of Austria, and not as a geopolitical entity—was propagated in the Baroque era as the most fundamental virtue of the Habsburg dynasty.

  • THE SALZKAMMERGUT 245 Gmunden © Lonely Planet Publications Planet Lonely © Dachstein Caves 5Finger Platform Kaiservilla St Wolfgang Hallstatt
© Lonely Planet Publications 245 THE SALZKAMMERGUT The Salzkammergut Sometimes called the ‘cradle of Austrian culture’, the Salzkammergut is a spectacular region of alpine and sub-alpine lakes, picturesque valleys, rolling hills and rugged, steep mountain ranges. The highest mountains climb to almost 3000m. Not least because of the Salzkammergut’s startling beauty, parts of this region – especially those lakes easily reached from Salzburg – can at times be swamped with visitors. But don’t despair – much of the region is remote wil- derness, and even in those heavily visited parts such as the Wolfgangsee and Mondsee, you’ll always find isolated sections where peaceful, glassy waters provide limitless opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing or just sitting on the shore and chucking stones into the water. The popular Hallstätter See is no exception. When the pretty streets in Hallstatt township are full of summer visitors, across the lake a sleepy, swampy Obertraun retains a village atmosphere. Strike out deeper into the region, and you will be rewarded with isolated splendour. Salt is the ‘white gold’ of the Salzkammergut, and the mines that made it famous now make for an interesting journey back in time to the settlers of the Iron Age Hallstatt culture, and to the Celts and Romans – all of whom sullied their hands in the mines. Along the western side of the Hallstätter See is a pipeline reputed to be the oldest in the world, used to transport brine. Today, the narrow swathe cut out to build and service the pipeline is a lush hiking trail. Whatever your reason for coming to the Salzkammergut – swimming, boating, hiking, climbing or exploring cultures – this region rewards the curious and adventurous.
