Recensie: Level 42*** Recensie: Level 42*** Ancienne Belgique Brussel woensdag 27 oktober 2010 foto © Nick Legrand Recensie: "Dankuwel. Goede avond. We are Level 42. That's all I can remember these days“ zegt frontman Mark King van Level 42. Klokslag half negen gaat het zaallicht uit en dat zal zo'n uur en 35 minuten blijven. De band die zijn grootste successen in de jaren '80 kende, bracht een greatest hits-show in de AB "coz there is no new stuff“ verklaarde de zanger/bassist. Naarmate de show vordert vallen enkele doeken naar beneden zodat we albumcovers op zwarte doeken kunnen zien, links en rechts. Tijdens "Running in the family“ geeft ook het middenste zich prijs. "1980 -2010. Friends for 30 years“ prijkt er op. Dat moet dan als statement naar de fans gezien worden, want van de originele band schieten enkel nog frontman Mark King en toetsenist Mike Lindup over. Maar laat dat vooral de pret niet bederven. In de AB bracht Level 42 een goed geoliede show, soms een tikkeltje routineus met een knappe belichting. Tijdens de ballad "It's over“ zien we verschillende scanners een warm rode lichtstraal naar hetzelfde middelpunt schijnen zodat het geheel als een 14-puntige ster overkomt. Wanneer daar aan de buitenranden nog een streepje wit aan wordt toegevoegd, geeft dat en knap effect. Of hoe je met wat creativiteit tot mooie lichtresultaten kan komen. De band liet meermaals horen dat het in de jaren '80 oorspronkelijk vooral begonnen was met instrumentale jazz-funk nummers. Heel wat songs kenden lange niet gezongen stukken met elektrische gitaren en typisch voor die tijd en zijn genre ook de saxofoon. "43“ was nog het meest uitspringende nummer want volledig instrumentaal. Het nummer uit 1981 kreeg halverwege een stevige drum en percussie-instrumental. Behalve de saxofonist hadden de andere 4 groepsleden elk een paar troms naast hen staan. "See you later. Give me a real good spanking“ antwoordde de frontman tegen en vrouw die vanop het eerste balkon haar liefde uitdrukte. King houdt van het hardere werk blijkbaar. Verder kende de show nog hoogtepunten tijdens bekende nummers als "Something about you“ en "Lessons in love“. Al liet toetsenist Lindup wel duidelijk in zijn kaarten kijken. De gekende synthbegeleiding stond mooi op tape mee te lopen vermits de man zijn eilandje verlaten had en het publiek heel de tijd zat aan te porren om in de handen te klappen. Eerste bis "Heaven in my head“ werd knap uitgefaded met diepe basklanken op elektrische gitaar en zachte drum. "The Chinese way“ sloot het optreden af waarmee Level 42 bewees dat het nog een zeer genietbaar optreden kan geven, hoewel er wat stof op de nummers is komen liggen. Ook op de zangkwaliteiten van de heren valt weinig aan te merken. Waarna de groepsleden op hun dagschema keken en er zagen dat er geen after show of party op het programma stond. De band zou meteen met de tourbus doorrijden naar Den Haag in Nederland. However, the picture differs from before. For instance, not everybody can take part in it anymore. And the state television China Central Television (CCTV) joined the competition for market share. It actually became a competitive player of “reality” by claiming to find the best original and creative Chinese musicians whose voices CCTV previously avoided or oppressed. In this thesis, I will examine one CCTV show, The Song of China (SOC), in order to examine what the norms of good Chinese music and musicians are in the context of reality music talent shows. My work will hopefully give you some insights into the characteristics and the wider social and political influences of such reality music talent shows in the post-SGV era.

McLean, VA 1 Executive Summary The title of this paper is “The Chinese Way of War: How Has it Changed?” The answer is that it has changed dramatically from what it was 20 years ago, but that does not mean that everything is new. There are some components of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) thinking (deception, stratagems, etc.) that remain as important elements of China’s way of war and they are being integrated into technologies. Such issues offer an overall sense of historical continuity in China’s approach to warfare that is based on a thought process going back thousands of years, to include the transcendent impact of Sun Tzu, Marx, and Mao on strategic and tactical issues. The number of articles and discussions in the journal China Military Science (CMS) over the past 20 years devoted to these three men fully support this contention. On the other hand, China’s intelligentization of operations and focus on joint and all-domain capabilities (to include domains not currently under consideration in the US) create new challenges.
