SENIOR SPIRIT NEWSLETTER OF THE CONCORD COUNCIL ON AGING

May 2017

Older Americans Month was created to honor and celebrate the contributions older Americans make to our communities and to our nation. Each year has a theme, and this year’s theme is Age Out Loud. Age Out Loud is intended to give aging a new voice—one that reflects what today’s older adults have to say about aging. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others. They expect to continue to live their lives to the fullest, and they’re insisting on changes that make that possible. The COA already offers a number of opportunities for wellness and community engagement. We offer support groups, blood pressure clinics, games, speakers on a wide variety of topics, transportation, medical equipment loans, outreach workers, trips, movies, and lunches, to name a few. Whether it is this month’s Brain Wellness Series, an exercise class, or a card game with friends, we have something for everyone. Stop in and see what is happening at the COA! If you have an idea for something that we have not tried, please let us know.

Seniors with Style Second Annual Fashion Show Thursday, May 25th from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM Last year’s COA Fashion Show was such a blast that we have decided to make it a yearly event! Join us on Thursday, May 25th at 3:30 PM to watch our own seniors modeling fashions from local clothing stores including Gould’s, Concord Outfitters, Reflections, Firefly, and Chico’s. These stores are generously loaning us their latest summer styles and fitting our seniors with the most flattering clothing so they can parade down the runway! This show will feature both men’s and women’s fashions. Did you ever dream of being a runway model? Well, it is not too late. We still need a few men and women to show off the styles. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge, but please call to sign up!

The ’67 Red Sox “Impossible Dream” Team Presented by Herb Crehan Friday, May 12th at 1:00 PM On this 50th year anniversary of the “Impossible Dream” team, re-discover the dramatic, true story of the historic 1967 Red Sox Impossible Dream season through an insider’s look at the lives of the gritty players who overcame 100-1 odds to win the AL pennant. Herb Crehan, a recognized authority on Boston baseball history, is in his 21st season as a contributing writer for the Boston Red Sox. He has written over 125 feature articles for the team’s official program. He is the author of three books – Lightning in a Bottle, Red Sox Heroes of Yesteryear, and The Impossible Dream 1967 Red Sox: Birth of Red Sox Nation. Crehan speaks extensively on Boston baseball history including appearances at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Please plan to join us on Friday, May 12th at 1:00 PM for this exciting presentation. There is no charge thanks to the Harvey Wheeler Gift Shop, but please call to sign up.

The Council on Aging will be closed on Monday, May 29th to observe the Memorial Day holiday. There will be no programs or van service that day.

Volunteer News & Opportunities The COA Volunteer Coordinator position is funded in part by the Concord Carlisle Community Chest.

Art Space Jean Moscariello’s beautiful collection of needlework art will remain on display through May 19th. Thirty years ago, Jean took a course in crewel embroidery, which is done with wool yarn, and enjoyed it so much that she has had a project in the works ever since. Do not miss this wonderful exhibit.

We are pleased to announce that our art instructors, Linda Malone and Neha Kavi, will be exhibiting their own work from May 19th through July 7th. Neha is a senior at Acton–Boxborough High School and was creating art before she could write. She first started taking art seriously when she was 12. Although at first she was drawn to oil pastels and colored pencils, her favorite materials are now acrylic paint and charcoal. Neha will continue her studies at the University of Chicago after graduating this June. Linda Malone is a landscape artist who also enjoys painting wildlife and people. She is passionate about painting, sharing her love of the arts, and teaching people to experience the joy of painting. Her favorite theme to capture is the energy of water, especially in waterfalls and ocean waves. Many in our senior community will recognize these two artists who have both taught classes here at the Concord Council on Aging.

Harvey Wheeler Treasure Chest Gift Shop May means all things Spring at the Harvey’s Treasure Chest Gift Shop. We will be featuring planters, stationery, arts and crafts, and much more. If you have not visited us lately, be sure to stop by and check out our wonderful jewelry and scarf collection. You are certain to find the perfect gift at an exceptional price. Wonderful varieties of fine greeting cards are available at the best price in town. The Silent Auction item this month is a Gucci watch in perfect condition. The starting bid is $50.00 (value $150.00). The Harvey Wheeler Treasure Chest is open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

All proceeds from the Harvey Wheeler Treasure Chest Gift Shop are gifted to the COA for programming. In March, the Gift Shop funded the entire cost of the COA Beach Party and in April, the popular Afternoon Tea Party. Without your support of the Gift Shop these events could not have happened. Just as Mother Hubbard went to the cupboards and found her cupboards bare, the Harvey Wheeler Treasure Chest too is running low on stock. So, think of us when clearing out your own cupboards of unneeded items. We thank you and all the ladies in the Gift Shop who work so hard to organize, display and sell the collections.

Individual Computer Tutoring Struggling with your computer, smart phone, or tablet? We can help! We have a dedicated group of high school students that offer free, private tutoring most afternoons at 3:00 PM. Our list of volunteer tutors includes Lukas McCourt, Jeffrey Zhu, Eleanor Mathias, and Emily Staknis. Please call to sign up for help from one of our amazing CCHS students!

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon By now our wonderful volunteers should have received their invitations to the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to be held on Tuesday, June 6th. If you have volunteered in the last year and have not received your invitation, please let us know. A wonderful Thank You is being planned for all our valued volunteers. Please RSVP by May 15th to let us know you are attending. If you are unable to attend, please stop by the COA office for a small token of our gratitude. 3

Welcome our New Nurse! We are pleased to announce that Urvi Agarwalla has started work for the Town as the Geriatric Public Health nurse. Urvi has many years of nursing experience at Massachusetts General Hospital and has most recently been working for the Burlington COA. We feel very fortunate to have Urvi on our team here and know that you will join us in making her feel welcome in our community. Urvi would love to meet you and encourages you to stop by her office to say hello and introduce yourself!

Window Air Conditioner Installation The Council on Aging will once again be making arrangements for seniors to get some help in installing their window air conditioners (limit of three units per household) during the month of June. Please call the COA now to let us know that you would like to take advantage of this service. We will call you back to confirm a specific installation date. You must be home when your air conditioner is being installed! The charge is $10.00 (cash) per air conditioner, payable directly to the installer. This service is offered on a first come, first served basis.

Protect Yourself from the “Grandparent Scam” The Grandparent Scam is possibly the most widespread senior scam, where the victim receives a call supposedly from a grandchild in trouble. The “grandchild” is calling from a friend’s phone and has gotten into a bad situation like being arrested for drugs, getting in a car accident or being mugged. He’s out of state or in a foreign country and needs his grandparent to wire some money as soon as possible. The “grandchild” begs that his parents not be told. What should you do? Resist the pressure to act quickly. Contact your grandchild or another family member to determine if the call is legitimate. Or call the Concord Police and ask them to help verify the situation.

Never volunteer names or other personal information. Never wire money based on a request made over the phone or in an email! For more information on how to protect yourself pick up an information flyer at the COA.
