Congratulations to all athletes and coaches in football, volleyball, boys soccer, softball, spirit, cross country, field hockey, boys golf, gymnastics and boys tennis for your season, even if it was too short, and ended before you wanted it to. As you can see, CHSAA is busy in the fall with 10 activities. Congratulations to them for their time and effort, especially at the state championship events. Speaking of champions, why was October 14th a significant day for all coaches and especially basketball coaches? Coach Al Synder, any guesses? John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood, turned 98. If he should reach 100, I think we should declare a national holiday for a national treasure. I researched some of the articles that followed his birthday and re-read his book, They Call Me Coach, along with looking at the websites that have been set up about him, his life and career. Of course, unmatched are his 10 NCAA titles, 7 in a row, and 88 games in a row. He was named Coach of the Century by ESPN. He recruited and coached the best of his era- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Walt Hazzard, Gail Goodrich, Keith Erickson, Jamal Wilkes, Sidney Wickes, Henry Bibby, among others. His quotes are as applicable today as they were when he started coaching: “Be quick, but don’t hurry”, “ It’s not so important who starts the game, but who finishes it”, “ The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team” and “No one wins without outstanding talent, but not everyone wins with it, either”. He gave us his Pyramid of Success, a framework for athletic achievement, but more importantly, a framework for life. Is Coach Wooden “Old School”? You bet he is and there is nothing wrong with that! In reality, he is probably older than old school and, believe it or not, he still has his critics. There was a recent article in the New York Times about his being too rigid, too strict, too disciplining. The article used, for example, that he taught his players how to put on their socks and shoes before the start of every season so they wouldn’t blister. (A valuable lesson to those of us who played in Chuck Taylor All-Stars). I guess that the lesson there is that if Coach Wooden can be criticized still today, what do we have to worry about? All of us, coaches and athletes, can gain from the principles he taught. On a sadder note, we mark the passing of Coach Pete Newell, a contemporary of Coach Wooden, who coached the Cal-Berkley Bears to a NCAA Championship in 1959, the 1960 Olympic team to a gold medal, and was most well known in recent years for his “Big Man” camps. With my main season starting, I realize again the importance of my assistant coaches and what they bring to our program. I have the two best in the state, and hope that I remember to thank them often enough. They should be the link between you and your players, someone that your kids can talk to, confide in, answer their questions, that possibly are a little less intimidating than the head guy or gal. All top programs that I am acquainted with have loyal assistants that are willing to spend as much time and energy as the head coach with less recognition. Tell your assistants tomorrow that you appreciate them! As a non-snow lover (PC correctness snow-hater), I say the only good thing about winter is the start of basketball season. Good luck to all, may your parents catch your vision and your principal be your biggest supporter! 5 A COMMANDER WILL COMMAND I hope this issue of the Colorado Coach finds each of you excited for the future and comfortable with what you have done so far in this great profession. Over the span of many years there are some in our coaching ranks who have accumulated many top accomplishments over the course of their careers. Five of these individuals will be the newest members of the CHSCA Hall of Fame, with the induction ceremony and dinner being held the last weekend in March, 2009.

  • Mallory Men Bullet Points
Mallory Men Bullet Points To: Loyal Mallory Men From: Andy Curtin RE: Letters of Recommendation for Bill Mallory’s Candidacy for College Football Hall of Fame My name is Andy Curtin. I created and ran the Legends Poll for 10 years from 2005 through 2014. We had 23 retired coaches participate over those years. Of this group 21 are in the HOF. Bill Mallory was a charter member and served all 10 years as a voter in the Legends Poll. The roster of Legends Poll coaches is stunning in its composition. Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Frank Broyles, John Cooper, Fisher DeBerry, Bo Schembechler, Terry Donahue, Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, LaVell Edwards, Don James, Hayden Fry, John Ralston, Dick MacPherson, Don Nehlen, John Robinson, Bill Snyder, R.C. Slocum, Gene Stallings, George Welsh, Frank Kush, Bobby Ross…and Bill Mallory. Bobby Ross and Bill are the two non-HOF coaches. Everyone of our Legends Poll coaches believe Bill Mallory belongs in the HOF. However, since 2010 no coach has been granted a waiver for eligibility from the 60% winning percentage minimum rule, despite the fact that there are 31 non-60% coaches in the HOF with over 200 coaches enshrined there. I have been lobbying for Bill for over 4 years now to have the National Football Foundation reinstate the waiver procedure. I believe we have our best chance now because I have created an Index called the Curtin Coach Index (CCI) which I have provided to you herewith. It awards points to coaches for playing Top 25, Top 10 and Top 5 teams and is then averaged by years of service.
