1. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Geology of this college has come into existence in 1961 with affiliation to Utkal University for providing teaching facilities in Geology at Intermediate Science (I.Sc.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) pass level. With establishment of Berhampur University, the affiliation shifted to it in the year 1966. The honours degree in Geology was introduced in the latter part of the year 1970. The college along with the Department of Geology achieved the status of Government College after taken over by the Govt. of Odisha with effect from 09.03.1971.The department of higher education, Govt. Odisha was pleased to open the post graduate studies in the department from the session 1979-80 with affiliation for 16 seats which was further enhanced to 32 seat in the year 1986. In its illustrious journey through the corridor of time the M.Phil. course in Geology with a strength of 16 seats has been introduced in the year 2012-13.

This department has witnessed several outstanding scholars with immense contribution to the geological science. Dr. S. Panda, Ex-Professor of Geology had done extensive research work on metamorphic and structural evolution of Eastern Ghats group of rock. Dr. M. Sahu Ex- Reader in Geology has much contribution on Alkaline rock around of Kalahandi District. Dr. H . K. Sahoo, Ex-Reader of this department has established the structural, tectonic model of Gandhamardhan Iron ore deposit and its characterisation. Dr.M. Panda, Professor of Geology was a pioneer worker on the petrography and structural evolution of Eastern Ghats suit of rock around Nihal Prasad, District Dr.D. S. Pattanaik, Ex-Lecturer in Geology had done substantial work on Cherimeri coal deposits of Madhya Pradesh. Dr. P.N.Behera, ex-Reader in Geology has done his Ph.D on petrography and geochemistry of coal deposits around Ib coal field. Dr D.P.Nanda, Ex-Reader has worked on the ground water condition of Berhampur town, district, Orissa. Dr.M.K.Patnaik, Lecturer in Geology has done extensive research work on Petrography and Metamorphic history of rocks in and around and – A part of Eastern Ghats group of Rocks.

The highlights of M.Sc. courses are the inclusion of specialized Applied Geology Subjects in relevance to the latest trends in research and job market like Remote sensing and GIS, Mining and Surveying, Engineering Geology, Ground water Geology, Environment geology, Disaster Management, Marine Geology etc., regular laboratory and field works, seminars. The students are provided with a comprehensive education in advanced Applied Geology.

The M.Phil. programme is essentially designed to align the students to take up the research work in the field of Ore Geology, Petroleum,Groundwater, Building stones and road materials.

8. SEMINAR ACTIVITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT

Regular Seminar is being held in the department. Teachers and student participate in the discussion. Outstation guest speakers are being regularly invited from reputed institution/ Organization like ORSAC, IIT – Kharagpur, Japan, GIS, Directorate of Mining and Geology, IRE Ltd.,OCL, Utkal University, ONGC. In accordance with the syllabus designed &developed both the Post graduate and undergraduate students of the department deliver seminar talks on different topics of geology. The syllabus makes seminar presentation mandatory for students with specific allocation of marks in their internal assessment examination.

8.1 Workshop and Training Sessions A GIS workshop was held in the Department on 27th and 28th Jan. 2007 with the help of Infosys Technologies. The P. G. Final year students participated in this programme. The students were trained on the basic fact of GIS. Both theory and practical classes were conducted in the field of GIS technology. A Training Course on “Water Management” organised as a part of Jal Kranti Abhiyan by Ministry of Water Resources, River development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Govt. of India on 3rd December 2015.

8.2 National seminar

A national seminar titled “Neo-thoughts on Frontier Geology” was organised during 2011 in the Department sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. Pradeep Ku. Jena, I.A.S, Commissioner-cum-secretary, Dept. of Energy, Govt.of Odisha inaugurated the seminar. Dr.M. Akshya, I.P.S and Dr. S.S. Mohapatra, Senior Scientist, ORSAC, alumini of this Dept. were Guests of Honour. The seminar was attended by U.G and P.G students and Geology faculty members of different colleges of Odisha.

9. GEOLOGICAL FIELD TRAINING PROGRAMME

Under the guidance of faculty members, students of B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. go on geological field training related to geological mapping, metallic and non- metallic mines, mineral based industries, different R and D Laboratories, collection of minerals, rock and fossil from the field etc. The department thus encourage the students to meet and work with professionals, scientists and agencies. Sri Ranjit Kumar Martha has been awarded as the best post graduate of this college for the session 2007-08. In U.G, 6th and final semester examination,2014, Ch.Sangram Keshari Patro of this Dept. Has been awarded the best graduate of the college. Sri Prasant Kumar Behera & Debadatta Sen after completion of their M.Sc degree in Geology have been qualified to take up Ph.D work in Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in the year 2012. In 2013, Sri Ramesh Kumar Behera, Bhabani Sankar Rout, Satya Narayan Sethy & Ram Ch. Soren got through the Geologist Examination 2013 conducted by Odisha Public Service Commission and joined as geologists in the Directorate of Geology, Govt. of Odisha. 12.2 Participation in national level mineral development quiz

Every year P.G. students of the Department participated in the mineral Development Quiz under as the aegis of SGAT, Bhubaneswar. During 2003-04 the students of this department are awarded with the 2nd prize. Sri Sankar Prasad Sahu, Asish Kumar Das & Suvaprada Jena brought fame to the department by getting Scholarship of Institute of Mathematics, Andharua,Bhubaneswar in 2012-2014.

14. CONCLUSION

The P.G Deptt. Of Geology, Autonomous College is the centre par excellence in imparting the education on Geological science in South Odisha comprising seven districts on the Easternghats terrain dominated mostly by rural and tribal people. The department endeavours to produce young geologists best suited to the market. Moreover the research activities on Geo-science in relevance to the surrounding topography& demography are being performed under the aegis of this institution.
