TOURING AS SOCIAL PRACTICE: TRANSNATIONAL FESTIVALS, PERSONALIZED NETWORKS, AND NEW FOLK MUSIC SENSIBILITIES by Andrew Neil Hillhouse A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Andrew Neil Hillhouse (2013) ABSTRACT Touring as Social Practice: Transnational Festivals, Personalized Networks, and New Folk Music Sensibilities Andrew Neil Hillhouse Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to an understanding of the changing relationship between collectivist ideals and individualism within dispersed, transnational, and heterogeneous cultural spaces. I focus on musicians working in professional folk music, a field that has strong, historic associations with collectivism. This field consists of folk festivals, music camps, and other venues at which musicians from a range of countries, affiliated with broad labels such as ‘Celtic,’ ‘Nordic,’ ‘bluegrass,’ or ‘fiddle music,’ interact. Various collaborative connections emerge from such encounters, creating socio-musical networks that cross boundaries of genre, region, and nation. These interactions create a social space that has received little attention in ethnomusicology. While there is an emerging body of literature devoted to specific folk festivals in the context of globalization, few studies have examined the relationship between the transnational character of this circuit and the changing sensibilities, music, and social networks of particular musicians who make a living on it. To this end, I examine the career trajectories of three interrelated musicians who have worked in folk music: the late Canadian fiddler Oliver Schroer (1956-2008), the ii Irish flute player Nuala Kennedy, and the Italian organetto player Filippo Gambetta. -

Reaching Out, Turning Home: The Musical Projects of Filippo Gambetta, Genoan Organetto Player ANDY HILLHOUSE Abstract: This paper examines the various projects of Filippo Gambetta (b. 1981), a diatonic accordion (organetto) player from Genoa in Northwestern Italy whose collaborative network includes Canadian, 40 (1): 100-20. 40 (1): Finnish, Belgian, Irish and Breton musicians. I propose that transnational engagements established through touring often serve to reinforce identifications with home, as individuals reflexively re-imagine it in relation to the universalistic folk festival milieu. In this process, the local is reconfigured as glocal. This MUSICultures paper is based upon multi-site fieldwork in which I performed with Gambetta on tour and visited him at his home in Genoa. Workshop Schedule 20171 Block 1: Friday evening 20:30-22:00 A: Asymmetrical Waltz by Eric, level 3 Tired of always dancing a waltz in 3? Seeks no further! In this workshop you will learn to dance to asymmetrical waltzes, which have plenty of variation. From 5 time waltz to 8, 11 time, 14 time, 17 time waltz... We will also work on different ways to dance to the 8 (3-3- 2 and 3-2- 3) and 11 (3-3- 3- 2, 3-2- 3-3, 3-3- 2-3) times waltz. Pre-requisites: You can dance a waltz in 3 times without problems. B: Slängpolska by Aurélie, level 3 This short workshop will be an excellent introduction to the Swedish folk dances in the beginning of this weekend. We’ll start with a dance which has a lot of success in Sweden; let’s make it more famous in the “South”! The slängpolska is a couple dance which comes in two forms: one is danced on a walk, the other on the spot. Both offer countless figures and possibilities of improvisation. The goal of this workshop is to allow dancers to discover the spirit of this dance and to acquire some tools so that each of them can create his/her own dance. C: Mixers by Elena, level 3 & 4 We all know mixers, such as the chapelloise/jig and the Circassian circle, but we rarely take them to the next level, which is what will keep these dances fun and interesting. During this workshop we will discover new mixers from different origins (folk, trad, Scottish repertoire), and focus on the techniques of group dances. -
