This measure would designate June 2016 as California Fairground Appreciation Month and commend the directors, volunteers, staff, local agencies, nonpro®ts, and Californians who support and attend fairground events. line 1 WHEREAS, California's 76 fairgrounds represent an important line 2 public asset, providing public recreation, education, and community line 3 unity to more than 20 million Californians every year; and line 4 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds provide vital emergency line 5 services as ®re camps, disaster relief centers, and training and line 6 staging areas; and line 7 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds accommodate both those line 8 actively involved in emergency relief efforts and those displaced line 9 by disasters and serve as a temporary home; and line 10 WHEREAS, More than one dozen fairgrounds served in line 11 emergency response capacities in 2015 alone; and

line 1 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds serve as year-round centers line 2 for economic activities, generating millions of dollars in tax and line 3 employment income for the state and local governments; and line 4 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds provide a unique and line 5 unparalleled platform for nonpro®t events and charitable efforts line 6 that in turn provide a wide variety of important social services, line 7 including food drives, blood drives, pet adoptions, scholarships, line 8 and educational activities; and line 9 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds promote the Golden State's line 10 proud agricultural history and foster the education of future line 11 generations about the connection between food and farming; and line 12 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds are gathering places for line 13 the state's diverse ethnic populations, veterans groups, and other line 14 organizations; and line 15 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds promote the conservation line 16 of natural resources, including water, and the importance of water line 17 to California farms and cities; and line 18 WHEREAS, California's fairgrounds are supported by thousands line 19 of volunteers from the boardroom to the parking lot and livestock line 20 barns; and line 21 WHEREAS, The 76 fairgrounds within California deserve great line 22 respect and admiration for their services to California; now, line 23 therefore, be it line 24 Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate line 25 thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the line 26 month of June 2016 as California Fairground Appreciation Month line 27 in appreciation for the services given to California by the 76 line 28 fairgrounds in the state; and be it further line 29 Resolved, That the Legislature commends the thousands of line 30 directors, volunteers, staff, local agencies, and nonpro®ts, as well line 31 as the millions of Californians, who support and attend fairground line 32 events year round; and be it further line 33 Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies line 34 of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

SUBJECT: California Fairground Appreciation Month

SUMMARY: Designates June 2016 as California Fairground Appreciation Month and commends the directors, volunteers, staff, local agencies, and nonprofits, as well as the Californians who support and attend fairground events. Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative findings:

1) California's 76 fairgrounds represent an important public asset, providing public recreation, education, and community unity to over 20 million Californians every year.

2) California's fairgrounds provide vital emergency services as fire camps, disaster relief centers, training, and staging areas as well as serving as year-round centers for economic activities generating millions of dollars in tax and employment income for the state and local governments.

3) California's fairgrounds promote the Golden State's proud agricultural history and foster the education of future generations about the connection between food and farming and promote the conservation of natural resources, including water, and the importance of water to California farms and cities.

4) California's fairgrounds are gathering places for the state's diverse ethnic populations, veterans groups, and other organizations.
