Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF ISPA Dear Friends, ransitions. We all think about them. Some of us worry about them. But we are all impacted by them. As much as we may try to be present each moment of our days, it is the rare person who does not ponder what comes next. Transitions can be as exhilarating as they are scary. In these times of rapid-fire change and volatility (mostly beyond our personal control), it is Teasy to default to a position of wanting to hang on to what we know. Stay the course. Be steady. Reduce risk. WELCOME Yet continuing to do the same thing that works for us today may be the very act that fails us tomorrow. Our Congress Co-chairs Collette Brennan and Steinunn Ragnarsdóttir have given us a brilliantly provocative theme to consider with an array of thought-leaders from within our field and beyond offering varied perspectives on how we might navigate the inevitability of the transitions we encounter. For me, transitions is a particularly apt theme as I prepare to pass on the chairmanship of ISPA to our colleague Tisa Ho. As an ISPA member for 20 years and board member for most of that time, I have been fortunate to work with so many gifted members who have given selflessly in leading ISPA through incredible Transitions.

    ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S OLIVIER AWARD-WINNING S C H O O L O F R O C K - T H E M U S I C A L WELCOMES NEW ADULT CAST WWW.SCHOOLOFROCKTHEMUSICAL.COM Today, 23 October 2017, rehearsals begin for the new West End cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Olivier award-winning production of School of Rock - The Musical. Stephen Leask, having played the role of alternate Dewey since May this year, will now lead the cast as Dewey Finn from 15 November 2017, as the show enters its second year in the West End. Joining Leask at the New London Theatre will be Alan Pearson as Ned Schneebly, Michelle Francis as Patty Di Marco, currently a member of the ensemble, and Craig Gallivan as the alternate Dewey Finn. Florence Andrews will continue as Rosalie Mullins alongside the three teams of thirteen kids who make up Dewey’s band. The ‘grown up’ cast is completed by ensemble members Nick Butcher, Cassandra McCowan, Jessica Louise Parkinson, Andy Rees, Cameron Sharp, Jake Sharp, James Smoker, Wendy Somerville, Andrew Spillett, Hannah Stratton and Alex Tomkins with swings, Paul Kemble, Laura Medforth, Billy Mitchell, Tasha Sheridan and Joshua St. Clair. No part of this survey may be reproduced without permission The comparative employment of men and women as actors, directors and writers in the UK theatre industry, and how new writing features in venues’ programming Period 1: 16 – 29 January 2006 (inclusive) Section A: Actors, Writers, Directors and New Writing. For the two weeks covered in Period 1, there were 140 productions staged at 112 venues. Writers Of the 140 productions there were: 98 written by men 70% 13 written by women 9% 22 mixed collaboration 16% (7 unknown) 5% New Writing 48 of the 140 plays were new writing (34%). Of the 48 new plays: 30 written by men 62% 8 written by women 17% 10 mixed collaboration 21% The greatest volume of new writing was shown at Fringe venues, with 31% of its programme for the specified time period featuring new writing. New Adaptations/ New Translations 9 of the 140 plays were new adaptations/ new translations (6%). What began as an idea of ​​ 8 guys (Henk van Gilpen, Robin de Levita, Joop van den Ende, Frans van Zaal, Henk & Gerard Peek, Ralph Goyarts and Robert Pronk) has become a serious world player in the show and theatre automation. How awesome was that with this super team! Theatre conversions 2017 started well with control conversions to SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) classification for the Diligentia in The Hague, Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal, Parkstad Limburg Theaters in Kerkrade, Theater Junushoff in move Wageningen, the Beatrix Theater in Utrecht and the Rabotheater Hengelo.   • Victoria Palace Theatre | Brintons
    Victoria Palace Theatre Brintons were selected to supply carpets throughout the Victoria Palace Theatre as part of its grand reopening, celebrated by the UK premiere of the award-winning musical ‘Hamilton’. The £50m refurbishment features bespoke Brintons carpets in the theatre’s auditoriums, foyers, salon, landings, lobbies, royal circle and basement rear stalls. Brintons were commissioned by design and architecture practice Aedas and contributed to this project alongside the Victoria Palace Theatre (Delfont Mckintosh Theatre Group) and Clare Ferraby Designs. Brintons have manufactured most of the carpets that I have designed for over 80 theatres, beginning with the Crucible in Sheffield in 1971. My design consultancy, Clare Ferraby Designs, has been responsible for the restoration or reinvention of the interiors of all eight of Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s heritage listed theatres in London; Brintons have been involved in all of them. I develop an appropriate series of carpet designs for the various public spaces in each different theatre, through painted images that reflect the particular characteristics of the space and its original architect. After agreement with Cameron, the preferred options with my selected tuft choices are digitised by Brintons into various manufacturing solutions. The preferred options are then sampled, tuft colours are adjusted, and layouts are produced to suit the differing designs for the range of complex spaces, all before a decision is made to manufacture. The Victoria Palace refurbishment was particularly successful as Brintons were able to fully understand my concept of creating the feel of Viennese Seccessionist Design that was appropriate for a building originally opened in 1911.
