NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2017 Dear all, operate 2017 ends and so we look back on the year that we have been in business for 15 years! How awesome was that with this super team! Theatre conversions 2017 started well with control conversions to SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) classification for the Diligentia in The Hague, Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal, Parkstad Limburg Theaters in Kerkrade, Theater Junushoff in move Wageningen, the Beatrix Theater in Utrecht and the Rabotheater Hengelo. We have achieved doubling the capacity of the winches to 1000 kg. Depending on the location of the winch this is accomplished through either counterweight assisting or double purchasing the lineset. Installation ‘The Bodyguard’ In October the Beatrix Theater will launch the Broadway musical of Stage Entertainment On Your Feet. © Alfredo Del Castillo This inspiring and true story of the Spanish-speaking Gloria and Emilio Estefan on their way to the top. Two musical heavyweights who believed in their talents and in each other. Together they sold more than 100 million albums and won many Grammy’s. Gloria was severely injured in an accident in 1990. Her perseverance and Emilio’s support help Gloria again ‘on her feet’. In addition, the role of Emilio is performed by both Jim Bakkum and Tommie Christiaan. The automation set of On Your Feet includes a combination of effects combined with a flywall, trusses and show flooring, all automated by STS. Following this, STS sought the Spanish heat, in Madrid winches and a new control system have been installed in the historic Teatro Coliseum on the Calle Gran Via. Additionally we installed a temporary flywall and a show floor for hit musical The Bodyguard. Show productions The year began with the completion of the Stage Around project in Tokyo together with producer Robin de Levita. In Tokyo the new concept of the turning stand with bridge, spinning donut and spinning projection screens has been achieved. Firstly we built a test site in the Netherlands. Before shipping over a ton of steel to Japan and rebuilding it, the Stage Around system was previously in the Netherlands produced for the famous and highly successful Soldaat van Oranje set in a plane hangar. In Japan the production centres around Stage Around system Japanese soldiers, the renowned Samurai and their history. Bat Out of Hell in the Opera House, Manchester, London Coliseum and Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto, the musical Hamilton in Victoria Palace Theatre, London and the Miss Saigon UK Tour have all been recently automated by STS. Bat Out of Hell is a breath-taking musical with the 17 biggest hits of Meat Loaf. Who does not know ‘I’d Do Anything For Love, ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’, ‘You Redeemed The Words Right Out Of © Eline Kikkert My Mouth’, ‘Dead Ringer for Love’, ‘Two Out of Three Is not Bad’, ‘Bat Out Of Hell’. Show production in the spotlight / Potter hits New York After the huge success in the Palace Theater, London (July 2017 - October 2018), STS realizes a complete new automated set for the 8th Potter Series in the Lyric Theater, New York. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (consisting of two performances) is currently the only part which has been realized as a play, it has won many awards and narrates the story of Harry Potter’s son. Trade fair From 15th - 17th January CUE2018 will take place in Rotterdam Ahoy. This biennial trade fair for event, installation and entertainment technology provides a 8 comprehensive overview of technical facilities. At this meeting place for technicians in the event industry and stage arts. Of course we’re there and looking forward seeing you at booth 207. Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

    EXHIBITIONS THEATRE & DANCE MUSIC SPORTS SPECIAL EVENTS Madrid. Save the Date 2018 | 1 So many tales to tell What was Madrid like two hundred years ago? Like many of the buildings that are now part of our heritage, Gran Vía avenue did not exist yet, but the city was already starting to take on its present-day appearance. On 23 April 1818, the first stone was laid for what would become theTeatro Real, the city’s new opera house. This year the iconic building is celebrating its bicentenary, and it’s doing so in style, revisiting some of the classics in its regular repertoire, like Aida, and staging major premieres such as Dead Man Walking -many will remember the film version- and Street Scene. The Prado Museum will also commemorate its two-hundredth anniversary in 2019, although the celebrations will officially kick off at the end of 2018. Fortuny and Rubens are two of the masters whose works will be featured in temporary exhibitions at the museum which was originally built to house the Royal Cabinet of Natural History. They won’t be the only artists Madrid will pay tribute to this year, however, as the 2018 exhibitions calendar will feature shows with artworks by Andy Warhol, Toulouse-Lautrec, Giacometti, Sorolla, Vasarely and Monet. We’ll feel the weight of history at extraordinary exhibitions like Auschwitz and at the theatre, thanks to stage adaptations of plays as representative of our heritage as Divinas Palabras (Teatro Español) and El Concierto de San Ovidio (Teatro María Guerrero). Madrid’s theatre scene is more vibrant than ever and theatregoers seeking more avant-garde alternatives will also be well served thanks to a packed calendar with a strong representation of female artists, including Sara Molina, Mónica Valenciano and Angélica Liddel.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF ISPA Dear Friends, ransitions. We all think about them. Some of us worry about them. But we are all impacted by them. As much as we may try to be present each moment of our days, it is the rare person who does not ponder what comes next. Transitions can be as exhilarating as they are scary. In these times of rapid-fire change and volatility (mostly beyond our personal control), it is Teasy to default to a position of wanting to hang on to what we know. Stay the course. Be steady. Reduce risk. WELCOME Yet continuing to do the same thing that works for us today may be the very act that fails us tomorrow. Our Congress Co-chairs Collette Brennan and Steinunn Ragnarsdóttir have given us a brilliantly provocative theme to consider with an array of thought-leaders from within our field and beyond offering varied perspectives on how we might navigate the inevitability of the transitions we encounter. For me, transitions is a particularly apt theme as I prepare to pass on the chairmanship of ISPA to our colleague Tisa Ho. As an ISPA member for 20 years and board member for most of that time, I have been fortunate to work with so many gifted members who have given selflessly in leading ISPA through incredible Transitions.

Stephen Leask, having played the role of alternate Dewey since May this year, will now lead the cast as Dewey Finn from 15 November 2017, as the show enters its second year in the West End. Joining Leask at the New London Theatre will be Alan Pearson as Ned Schneebly, Michelle Francis as Patty Di Marco, currently a member of the ensemble, and Craig Gallivan as the alternate Dewey Finn. Florence Andrews will continue as Rosalie Mullins alongside the three teams of thirteen kids who make up Dewey’s band. The ‘grown up’ cast is completed by ensemble members Nick Butcher, Cassandra McCowan, Jessica Louise Parkinson, Andy Rees, Cameron Sharp, Jake Sharp, James Smoker, Wendy Somerville, Andrew Spillett, Hannah Stratton and Alex Tomkins with swings, Paul Kemble, Laura Medforth, Billy Mitchell, Tasha Sheridan and Joshua St. Clair. For the two weeks covered in Period 1, there were 140 productions staged at 112 venues. Writers Of the 140 productions there were: 98 written by men 70% 13 written by women 9% 22 mixed collaboration 16% (7 unknown) 5% New Writing 48 of the 140 plays were new writing (34%). Of the 48 new plays: 30 written by men 62% 8 written by women 17% 10 mixed collaboration 21% The greatest volume of new writing was shown at Fringe venues, with 31% of its programme for the specified time period featuring new writing.
