1 President’s Report

Let me start by congratulating all of you – our players and member clubs – for a fabulous year of football in 2012, juniors, women and seniors all had a terrific season.

Since becoming President of the Northern Suburbs Football Association (NSFA), my main personal motivation has been to develop our association into one that facilitates the growth of football as the ‘first choice’ sport within the local community. This is reflected in our vision statement in our Strategic Plan 2012–2018, which is all about promoting and developing ‘Football for All” through participation in the game from grassroots to elite levels.

That being said, my first year as President has been a path of learning through consultation with key stakeholders such as the football professionals, the players, parents, the clubs, Council and the business community. The process of listening, discussion and review has enabled me to acquire so much knowledge, to prioritise the issues and to focus firstly on tactical issues requiring swift resolution. There are many other matters in the pipeline which are also being assessed, as they are more of a strategic nature, requiring medium or long term resolution.

Some of our main achievements this year have included: • review and restructuring of coaching for all, • the development of our Strategic Plan 2012 – 2018, • name change to Northern Suburbs Football Association, • Constitution review and implementation, • introduction of strategic alliances with member clubs and local councils to improve grounds, and • reinforcement and strengthening of our relations with our stakeholders, friends and partners.

There is a lot more work still to be done but I strongly believe that we are on track to improve what we do more efficiently and cost effectively.

I sincerely want to thank all the club Presidents and those who have supported me in this journey … your counsel and advice has been inspiring and fundamental to our achievements.

I want to also thank all the members of the NSFA Management Committee and sub-committees who work tirelessly to manage the game to deliver improvement across the board. The day-to-day management of the NSFA operations is a difficult and arduous task, to say the least, and the management and staff of the NSFA office are owed an enormous “thank you” for their ongoing dedication and commitment to the job at hand.

Thank you to all.

Now, let’s continue on our journey to deliver excellence in football for our children “from the Harbour to the Hawkesbury”. Alan Barwick President

2 General Manager’s Report

I’m pleased to report that this has been one of the best years for matches completed by our competition teams. Most divisions managed to get a final series in which has not happened for about six years now. As far as I am aware any washouts that occurred were made up later in the season.

Our total winter numbers dropped by about 280 (1.82%) which we mostly put down to players frustrated by washouts over the last two years. The weather is something we really can’t control. As in recent years, our sub committees, in the case of ground closures, attempted to play as many games as possible with the grounds that remained open. I should point out that this task needs a lot of coordination and time between the Draw Master Damian Miles and the competitions sub committee members. I often received complaints about advices not being posted regarding re arranged games until after 6.00pm Friday evening, unfortunately many players/ parents do not realize what is going on behind the scenes.

On the pitch we had two State Cup winners in Lindfield Under 21 Men and Northbridge Over 35 Men .This is the third year in a row that we have the 035 Men State Cup winners, West Pymble achieving it in 2011 and Northbridge again in 2010. As at date of writing the same two teams are in the Champion of Champions finals.

Our representative club the Northern Tigers had an outstanding year with our senior men’s side taking out the double, winning both the league and grand final .Our women’s and girls team had similar success winning the Super League Club Championship together with many other awards which are detailed later in this report. These outstanding results have seen our women /girls promoted to FNSW highest league for 2013, the FNSW Premier League. Also in 2013 as part of the FNSW Skills Acquisition Program (start of the national talented player pathway) NSFA will be running two teams each in the under 9, 10 and 11 programs, trial dates will be announced late October.

Our Coaching Chair James Sneddon has been kept busy in discussion with our various senior coaches on the formation of the Northern Suburbs Football School. Further information will be released later in the year.

Grounds – Most of the grounds this year stood up fairly well to wear and tear , I believe this was due to a combination of rain at the right time of year to promote growth and many of our clubs taking an ownership role in promoting practices that avoided excessive training in one spot e.g. goal mouths. Greg Hay has spent a lot of time liaising with Ku-ring-gai Council and updating us all ( see his report later) on the new artificial pitch at UTS ,West Lindfield, new fields and upgrades at North Turrumurra and Koola Park. Also Willoughby Council have converted several tennis courts to artificial Futsal courts which will be invaluable for training purposes in that municipality.

We continue as a sport to receive strong support from local Councils, State and Federal politicians. All our Councils have recently gone through local government elections. Whilst there have been some changes I do not expect any change in the support we currently enjoy.

Community – I have added a small piece in this year’s report highlighting what many of our clubs do for the broader community. I think it is important that we make others aware that our reach is beyond football.

Again thank you to all those hard working Club and Management/sub committee members that make it all happen.

John Ceccato General Manager

3 Junior Mixed Football Report

Another season of Junior Football has come and gone, with many hours spent alongside football pitches for dedicated parents, players, volunteers and supporters. Thanks to all of you for making the season great for the players from U6 to U18, without you the games would not be played.

This season, thanks to the great weather, we were lucky enough to play a final series for most divisions, something that has not occurred for many, many years. Thanks to the NSFA team for assisting with getting the season across the line, without them it would cause much stress for our volunteers.

This season kicked off for our competition teams with a Round Robin style tournament for the KDSA Shield Competitions. I have had very positive feedback from this day and hopefully it is one that will continue into the future. The playing of this competition saw many more teams registering to play in the Shield Competitions, reinvigorating a competition that was not strongly supported in previous years, resulting in a terrific finals day at Mills Park. The non-competition footballers continue to develop their skills and this is evident in the high quality of play that is now occurring in the Competition Age Groups of those players that have come through the Small Sided Football game environment.

On a disappointing note, the behaviour of players, parents and coaches was not of the same standard as in previous years. The Junior Football Committee received many complaints of poor and unsporting behaviour, with a number of players, parents and coaches having to appear before the PD&DC Committee. I urge all clubs to monitor the behaviour of their members and to reinforce the Code of Conduct.

Gala Day was a great success with the boys and girls in the district giving it their all in their last games for the season, with some lucky enough to chat with a couple of Mariners players at Blackman and Montview Ovals.

I wish to acknowledge and thank the Junior Registrar, Christine Freer, who worked tirelessly throughout the season and without whom a number of tasks would have fallen through the cracks. Thanks Christine for your support and dedication to football in the district.

I also wish to thank the Junior Football Committee for all their efforts during the season, without them we would struggle to get the season started. They give up their valuable time from their families to ensure that the competition runs smoothly. So thank you to Tony Kalogerou, Trent Bird, Kim Swift, Glen War, Rory Grace, Lee Sullivan and Dale Catzel – your contributions to junior football are highly valued.

A special mention needs to go to Ian Batey for ensuring that games were scheduled and re-arranged as required (a complicated and time consuming task). Thank you Ian for your sterling efforts and for being available to take my stressful emails and calls to get the draw right…. Another big thank you to Damian Miles for getting the non-competition draw organised, not an easy task and often with little thanks.

To all the clubs, thank you for all that you do to get your teams on the park and playing good football week in and week out. This is not an easy accomplishment and requires many hours of planning in the off-season and cajoling of volunteers during the season. However, the results can be seen on the pitch every weekend with canteens being open, supporters on the sidelines and games played with spirit. See you all in season 2013!

Season 2012 has seen a levelling off of teams over 2011 figures which still places the competitions almost at saturation point and has placed an enormous amount of pressure on our already stretched ground resources which means more games being played on available grounds on Sundays. This continues to create more pressure on resources for Sundays as the Womens competitions also grows and with some Councils not allowing the same access to grounds on Sundays to what is used on Saturdays. Some Councils now have rules that at least one team competing on a ground must come from that Council area which is also creating pressure on resources. The levelling off in team numbers has occurred across the divisions which continues the need of playing more games on Sundays with most divisions playing three Sunday rounds. The Committee decided to increase the minimum numbers required for squads and teams which contributed to the levelling off of team numbers whilst keeping player numbers at the previous levels if not higher.

On top of the need to schedule Sunday fixtures both in the various competitions and for Cup fixtures the dreaded wet weather fortunately did not cause as much havoc with our scheduling of fixtures as in previous years. This meant replays were being scheduled as quickly as possible. This saw all competition fixtures being finished on schedule and most divisions were able to fit finals in for the first time in many years. This meant that some divisions completed their additional fixtures (round robins, pennants, competition round etc) that were duly scheduled as requested by the various divisions. The main aim of the Committee is to ensure all normal competition fixtures are played and this was achieved. The Committee strives to play every fixture planned however this is not always possible but we were able to do so this season.

KDSA Cup Winners – Lindfield During the wet weather we encountered, the Committee continued its policy to get as many fixtures played as possible on open grounds to get full rounds played, then “odd” games required to even out the various Teams/squads for Season 2012: competitions. We feel this is the best way to go however occasionally the plans we put in place to get games Premier League 10 squads played can go awry with unforeseen and very late changes having to be made. Unfortunately as numbers All Age 2, 3, 4, 5 10 squads each continue to increase and as Councils spend less time and money on ground maintenance, this situation will All Age 6 8 squads only get worse. We can only hope that this trend will reverse and together with a strong co-operative approach All Age 7 7 Teams between NSFA, Member Clubs and the Councils that this will become a reality. Over 35 – 1 8 Squads Throughout the year the Committee sent out a few circulars regarding Wet Weather, Grounds and Over 35’s Over 35 – 2 8 Squads Over 35 – 3 8 Squads in 2013 which I hope was read by all. We have received a couple of submissions from Member Clubs for our Over 35 – 4 9 Squads due consideration which is appreciated. In our circulars on grounds we urged Clubs to take ownership of the Over 45 – 1 10 Squads grounds they use and start to approach Council in order to take the necessary steps to improve the ground and Over 45 – 2 9 Teams the facilities used. Also there are a number of grants available to Members that will assist you with this process. A lot of this information goes out to clubs from the NSFA Office via Greg Hay who is there to help you all.

6 Girl’s/Women’s Football Report

What a difference 12 months can make! We went from lots of rain in 2011 to hardly any in 2012. This meant that we had games most weekends and were able to fit in a finals series for most age groups. We had planned prior to the season starting to try to deal with the impact of the rain on the competitions by introducing playing on Easter Monday and on the Monday of the June long weekend. We did not end up needing those extra days this year but we may well in the future. This is what the men have been doing for years and these measures along with their ability to play both Saturday and Sunday has meant that the men have always played more games than the women.

The Committee had a number of new people this year. Rhondda Shaw was the Chair and coordinator for G8, 9 &10, Caroline Downing the Registrar, Vicky Shaw W35 coordinator, Anne Meagher WAA coordinator, Michelle Cross G18 coordinator, Di Bal G16 coordinator, Sussi Fitzsimmons G14 coordinator, Karen Elzerman G12 coordinator and Chris Wilkinson G11 coordinator.

In the past the age coordinators have not really played a hugely active role in the administration of the competitions throughout the season and this has meant a lot of work for the Chair and Registrar. This year the age coordinators took on more of the work and I think in doing so learned a lot more about what works and what doesn’t. We hope to continue this next year and it should mean that each of the roles is not too taxing. Our biggest problem is communication with the players. We get complaints from people saying that they did not know about this or about that, even after we have sent information to the clubs and posted it on the web site. That is not to say that we were perfect with all of our efforts to advise people of all things and we will endeavour to always improve but we hope to address this aspect in 2013 by adding to our communication efforts and have direct contact with coaches and managers. We did this with G11 and W35 this year in order to get feedback about things that had been introduced and about future proposals. This has been the most effective way to get our messages out and to get feedback. It was also good because we got to hear from people who were happy as well as those who were not. Generally we only hear from people who complain and that can skew ones understanding of what the majority think. We will include the club secretaries in all communication.

We introduced the first WAA and W35 Gala Day this year. It was great to see so many people take part and the feedback was that the players enjoyed the day and would like this to be an annual event. We still need to get the message out to some players and parents about the aim of gala day (relaxed/fun) as there were a few unfortunate incidents with people getting a bit too hot under the collar.

The introduction of G11 went well. The feedback is that we should continue to offer this age group. We hope to offer a W40 5-a-side competition in 2013 to be held on Saturday afternoon on the pitches used by the U8 and U9 in the mornings. The aim is to create a more social and less competitive environment and is aimed at women who like to play but do not have the fitness or time to commit to the full size game. We may also be in a position to offer W45. The idea about adding W45 has been around for a few years and there may well be enough interest to run this in 2013. We will introduce these new competitions in the same way that we did the G11 this year, that is, to ask that nominations are in earlier than the other deadlines so that if we do not get enough teams entering, the players can merge into the existing structure.

Rhondda Shaw Chair NSFA Women’s and Girls’ Committee

7 5-A-Side Report

The 5-A-Side competitions have again proved to be extremely popular, though for the first time in 4 years we have witnessed a reduction in the number of players and teams. Our competitions were open to the U12 through to the O45 age groups (male and female competitions). Pleasingly the Thursday Mixed AA competition is gaining popularity and we also held a shorter U14 Mixed competition on Tuesday evenings during February 2012 at the Ku-ring-gai Hockey Centre.

During this period we coordinated the following competitions: • 2011 Winter 5-A-Side Competition – our 3rd winter competition held at James Park, Hornsby with 12 teams (8 Women’s teams / 4 Mixed teams) entering. • 2011 / 12 Summer 5-A-Side Competitions – with 213 team entries consisting of 1,251 financial players. The Competitions were held at St Ives Showground, and in an attempt to work in closely with Ku-ring-gai Council we held a separate competition on the all-weather surface at the Ku-ring-gai Hockey Centre during our shorter February competitions.

WET, WET…WET conditions best describes the Summer 5aside competitions this season, with astonishingly high rainfall received from October 2011 through to March 2012. I would like to thank all team members, managers, spectators, referees and ground officials for their patience, flexibility and understanding of our collective efforts in attempting to reschedule washed-out games.

Also, we need to acknowledge and thank Ku-ring-gai Shire Council for their cooperation and efforts in maintaining the Showground playing fields during the traditional “off-season” for our players, especially as soccer is recognised as a winter sports user-group. There are many wonderful people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the “seamless” running of the 5aside competitions, including: • Brian Binfield – Ground Manager, who also takes on many other roles including helping to set-up the goals, pack-up at the end of each evening and refereeing. • Andy Bayles – Assistant Ground Manager, who also takes on the onerous role of ‘Head Chef’ at our popular fundraising BBQs each evening. • Ross Hendry – setting up the goals each day. Mixed Bags ‘Spirit of Football Award’ winners. • David Howard – the behind the scenes ‘trouble shooter’. • Marcus Green – website administrator. • KDSA staff – including Marcia Allman, Jodi Sparks, John Ceccato, Damian Miles and Alan Clarke. • KDSA MC – for the ongoing support of the 5aside competitions.

Fundraising: Our major fundraising initiatives for the season were: 1. nightly BBQs with all profits to: • Adam Kellerman ($1,000.00) – 2012 Paralympian who now has a career-high world ranking of 23 in the demanding sport of wheelchair tennis, and also reached the final 16 in the Paralympics. Adam’s goal is to become the No. 1 ranked player in the world, with the funds helping him with tournament entry fees, coaching fees, repair and replacement of equipment. • Errol Hyde ($500.00) – former paralympian (wheelchair basketball) who was thrilled to receive the funds Super Eight ‘Spirit of Football Award’ junior winners. following recent hard times. Errol used the funds for home repairs and the ongoing care of his granddaughter.

8 2. Movember – raised a total of $1,085.00, all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds for prostate cancer and male mental health.

Congratulations are also in order to our Referee, Dougal Graham who in February won the NewsLocal “Junior Sports Star Service to Sport Category” award.

On a final note, I would like to thank all players and their respective Team Managers and volunteers in ensuring the ongoing success of our Summer Twilight 5-A-Side Competitions…without your collective efforts, the 5aside summer competitions would not be the enjoyable ‘family atmosphere’ activity it is.

This year Special Needs Football saw the end of an era with the last of the original group of players leave the program.

9 years ago, St Ives kicked off a program for kids with intellectual disabilities with a group of 16 children. This spread first to Sutherland and West Pymble and then to other clubs throughout NSW. At the end of 2011, the last of the original players along with others who were leaving secondary school decided to move on to new weekend activities. In the past 9 years there have been more than 200 children participate in the special needs programs run from St Ives and West Pymble averaging about 3 years participation.

Usually this report includes details of activities and numbers for the year, this year I thought I would make it more personal. Each child is unique and has their own particular issues and challenges with this program we try to introduce physical activities and social interaction for those who would otherwise be isolated from their peers except for the confines of school. One child started this year that perhaps best puts into context the reason for the program.

The player suffers from Prader Willi Syndrome which Wikipedia describes as “a rare genetic disorder characteristic by low muscle tone, short stature, cognitive disabilities and a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity”. Imagine what it must be like to go through life being judged because of your appearance by those who do not understand your condition. Always being hungry and not knowing why.

Of his own volition, the child in his mid teens decided to join the program knowing the potential for ridicule. There was no standard shirt large enough for him to play in so the club took two XXL shirts and cut them up and re-sewed panels into each side of one, the club also made up special bibs in a similar manner, all this so that he would not feel out of the ordinary.

Just by participating, he has a Saturday activity like so many mainstream players and in the process he and his family have met others facing similar challenges who can share their experiences. Despite all the issues he proved to be a real character the enthusiasm and infectious optimism that he brought to the games was inspiring for those who met him. This player will never win any pennant or make a final but in just taking the field has shown a determination and application that is truly admirable.

Stories like this have been repeated for the other 200 children that have taken part over the years who, along with their parents have much more difficult and complex lives. They participate not to be the best but to be the best they can be. David Howard Special Needs Coordinator – St Ives

10 PD & DC Report

The Protests and Disciplinary side of the game certainly isn’t the sexy end our game, nor is it the most enjoyable aspect of our game – whether you are on the panel side or the participant side. It is certainly an important side of the game, and one that clubs do need to put more focus on.

Fortunately 2012 was a relatively smooth year from a perspective of serious incidents, with only a handful of serious cases involving bans of more than one year. Unfortunately the number of cases heard by PD & DC overall has increased this season – hopefully a KPI that we can reverse in 2013.

Every season the panel attempts to educate clubs and players in key problem areas we are seeing arise on and off the field. This season the panel continued a focus from the last couple of seasons, to discipline members for the verbal abuse of officials and other players. Whilst some would argue swearing is part of everyday life, verbal abuse is a key reason our game loses volunteers – especially referees. The panel’s starting point for verbal abuse Referees for the Vice President’s Shield on KDSA Cup Day. of referees is 4 weeks and 2 weeks for other players and this has been consistent for the past two seasons and will remain a focus in 2013. So keep the language down and make sure everyone can enjoy the game.

Another area of concern has been spectator behaviour – at both senior and junior games. It is disappointing that some clubs feel it is not their job to control spectators or that they are powerless to do anything. Certainly under the regulations, clubs are directly responsible for spectators at their games. The main issue is the lack of process and procedures around this issue at club level. NSFA is relatively relaxed on spectator control compared with other associations, and whilst not wanting to be draconian, there is certainly a case for standardisation of basic spectator control processes and education of club members. I’ll be recommending changes in this area to the NSFA Board in 2013. It is especially important for parent spectators to remember we want our junior players to have an enjoyable football experience on a weekend, but being shouted at or seeing mum or dad get into an argument on the sideline with someone else certainly doesn’t let them have a great experience.

We have seen a number of clubs introduce their own PD & DC panels. This is certainly encouraged and I am happy to guide clubs who wish to set up their own panels for next season and the best way to go about this.

It was also great to see some governance and regulatory changes in NSFA in 2012 – particularly when you are the ones that have to interpret regulations that have evolved over the years and are often inconsistent. Alan Clarke resplendent in pink, officiating on Gala Day. The adoption of the new NSFA constitution is an important first step, and an overhaul of the NSFA By-Laws is underway and will be in place for next season.

11 Coach’s Report

It has been an impressive year for coaching and player development in the district and I am pleased to provide Weekly Coaching Clinics were held at Cowan Public School a summary of several initiatives that will help lay the foundations for future years. during 2013. Football Development Review Early in the season I wrote to clubs requesting their feedback and thoughts on development activities at their club. The overwhelming message was that clubs felt they needed to do more than they had done in this area however were unable to because of a lack of resources.

In response to this the NSFA Football School concept was developed. A football development program that: • Did not compete for players with clubs but gave players additional opportunities to access high quality, low cost training. • Was being taught by all highly qualified coaches. • Had at its core the promotion and development of club football. • Was firmly based around the FFA National Curriculum. • Reinvested any surplus back into player and coach development. NSFA Football School The Skills Clinic launched in September, a pre-cursor to the October launch of the Football School, gave us the opportunity to test the format and deal with any teething issues and for players and their parents to try out what we have to offer.

The result was a resounding success with over 80 players registering in just two weeks. The feedback received in our parent survey again confirmed we were on the right path.

As I pen this report we have similar numbers registered for the official launch of the NSFA Football School, operating out of St Ives Showground. A second venue further south is likely to be offered in the New Year. We expect to double these numbers as the new football season approaches. The momentum is expected to continue as the profile of the Football School builds.

12 School Holiday Programs Our school holiday programs have continued to grow in popularity with around 200 players attending in each holiday period, once again confirming the demand that exists for grassroots football programs. Elite Football We announced during the season that elite football development was being brought in-house as it was clear that this was in the best interests of players and the broader NSFA football community. Futsal Through Northern Tigers Futsal we have provided our young players with further opportunities to continue to develop their skills over the off-season. This year we have added development squads in the u6, u7, u8, u9, u10 and u11 age groups, again providing players with more opportunities for touches on the ball….another 80 plus kids receiving excellent development. Coaching Restructure Following a review of our coaching structure we have appointed Jason Eagar as Technical Director – an appointment well deserved by the Super League Coach of the year (for the second time). Jason will have control of all day to day coaching matters, including oversight of all of our coaching programs. He will Senior Licence coaching course. be particularly involved in coaching-the-coaches programs in 2013, to the benefit of all our clubs. Player Retention I am certain you will agree that these initiatives will help build further enjoyment and passion for the game and contribute to increased player participation and retention.

I would like to thank all our coaches for their continued commitment to football development.

13 Northern Tigers Football Report

(above): Girl’s U12 Grand Finals Winners 2012. (right): Northern Tigers Men’s Super League Premiers and Champions 2012. The Northern Tigers have had a tremendous year in 2012. Representing all 34 member clubs of the Association, we have provided players with the opportunity to make the step up from grassroots club football to the Football NSW State League competition.

This year has seen some outstanding achievements, which were acknowledged by Football NSW at the recent Super League Dinner. The highlights included: Men and Youth in 2012: • FNSW Super League First Grade Premiers and Champions (Grand Final Winners) • FNSW Super League Fair Play Award • FNSW Super League Goalkeeper of the Year – Stuart Page • FNSW Super League Coach of the Year – Jason Eagar Women and Girls in 2012: • FNSW Womens Super League Club Champions • FNSW Womens Super League U16 Champions (Grand Final Winners) • FNSW Womens Super League U14 Premiers • FNSW Womens Super League U12 Premiers & Champions (Grand Final Winners) • FNSW Womens Super League Coach of the Year – Eric Daly Additionally, the Northern Tigers Women have gained promotion to the FNSW Premier League for the 2013 season which has been the culmination of three years planning and commitment.

Our aim is to develop our local NSFA players and help them to realise their true potential, so that they can move from our Junior to Senior ranks. This year our players group has excelled, and over the medium term the results of the last three year’s efforts are beginning to bear fruit.

We have in place one of the finest groups of coaches and managers, under the direction of Jason Eagar, Kai Lammert and Eric Daly. They have performed well as a team, and if we can improve our player base further, then we can create an environment and culture that can achieve our goal of being in Premier League. We are half-way there now.

14 Women’s Super League Grand Final Winners and Club Champions 2012

Our Development Squads have increased the pool of available players and they are a worthy addition, bridging the gap between grassroots and representative football. The Girls squads will continue in 2013.

The Northern Tigers will continue to offer indoor Futsal in the FNSW State competitions as a summer training alternative to outdoor Footbal. After a major restructure overseen by Kai Lammert, the Futsal club has really taken off. Our U12 Girls were Premiers and the Youth team were Premiers and Champions, a fantastic result considering that the Club was rebuilt in one season.

We see Futsal as an important part of the development of our footballers, it is necessary in order to become the ‘complete’ footballer today. The Northern Tigers Women’s coaches also helped develop a NSFA Association U21 side for the Champion of Champions tournament, as part of our aim to help district club players improve their football.

Under the new Technical Director, Jason Eagar, the Club has put in place a great coaching structure for next year. All the coaches will work as a team to assist and vary the delivery of programs to the players.

We continue to encourage coach education, and have recently placed some of our Northern Tigers coaches through a C-Licence.

Again this year we provided the opportunity for our U15 Boys to travel to the UK and have the great football experience, visiting many famous Clubs and places, and having the opportunity to train and play there. Next year will be a consolidation year. We hope to cement our place in Women’s Premier League, and gain entry for our Youth and Men. The focus continues to be on nurturing and developing local talented players, and providing our players the opportunity to play at the highest level. 37 Community Participation

Northbridge FC supported the Starfish Foundation in Cambodia and Thailand.

As an organisation clearly community involvement is very important to us. This is usually demonstrated via the promotion of football and values that we attach to it. What goes unnoticed and unpublished are the wonderful things our members do outside formal competition. Over the last several years our members have been involved in; • Our West Pymble and St Ives Club continue with their very successful Special Needs Program -There are over 50 children involved. • The association had provided a time slot at Mills Park for Paralympics group to train. • Northbridge FC continue to support the Starfish Foundation that do marvelous things for children in Cambodia and Thailand. • West Pymble support a group in Papua New Guinea by providing them with large amounts of gear. • Last year St Ives and Sacred Heart Pymble donated about 15 large boxes of gear that ended up with children in Madagascar. • We conducted a Youcan Promotion the proceeds of which went to assist young children with cancer. • Northern Tigers Futsal provided superseded new gear to the Clarke Road School (Special Needs). • Lane Cove FC sent kits to two aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. • Kissing Point FC donated 200 soccer shirts to the Kanga School in Sierra Leone • Members made substantial donations to the Boots for Africa Campaign. • Women’s /Girls Football Committee raised money on Gala Day for the Breast Cancer Foundation. • Various individual members raised funds for Mens Health. ST Ives Football Club • 5 Aside football at St Ives have a fund raising BBQ to assist paraplegic sports people. • Capital sums continue to be provided via our Grounds Development fund for improvement to both council and school playing fields John Ceccato General Manager

38 Community Participation continued

The John Moriarty Football Program commenced in late February 2012 in the remote community of Borroloola (population approximately 1,000 residents – 95% indigenous) with the support of the school, council and local community. The project is using football as a key to encourage education and career aspirations among Indigenous children; JMF will create and deliver world best practice development for young Indigenous football players. John Moriarty is Patron of Football Federation Australia’s Indigenous Football Development Program, helping FFA nurture Indigenous football talent.

With the majority of young remote and regional Indigenous children living in severely disadvantaged situations, the potential for sustainable change is considerable. John Moriarty Football will offer structured, FFA accredited football development for young Indigenous athletes to: • foster healthier communities, supporting school attendance and pathways to jobs • create local sustainability through family and community engagement so parents encourage children to be at school • build local capacity by equipping and intensively mentoring local accredited coaches with long term training and leadership development • mentor and encourage children to believe in their future potential by going to school and achieving through sport

In 2012, Lane Cove FC sent a donation of shirts, and other equipment to this worthwhile cause.

Winning Clubs

YEAR WINNING CLUB AGE GROUP

1972 West Pymble U21 1975 North Ryde U17 1978 St Ives U17 1980 Mt Colah U13 1981 Wahroonga U21 1991 Hellas U16 1991 Kissing Point U21 1993 Hornsby Heights U13 1993 Hornsby Heights U16 1993 Mt Colah U17

O35 Champion of Champions 2012 – Northbridge 1994 West Pymble U21 1998 Clarke Road U15 This season Northbridge Men’s Over 35’s won the Football NSW Champion of Champions tournament. They become 1998 Berowra U18 the first KDSA club to win in this age group. 2000 Wahroonga U11 The Champion of Champions tournament has been running since 1972. The tournament is contested by the 2002 Northbridge U11 premiership winning teams in each age group from each association. KDSA has entered teams in this tournament 2002 Lane Cove U12 since it began and Northbridge’s win now means that KDSA clubs have won every possible male (now mixed) age 2004 Chatswood Rangers U15 group from Under 10 to Over 35 at least once. Only the relatively new Over 45 title is missing. 2005 Chatswood Rangers U16 West Pymble won the first Champion of Champions title for a KDSA club in 1972, winning the Under 21 2006 Chatswood Rangers U17 competition. KDSA has gone on to win this age group a further 3 times and our clubs have also added 4 Under 2007 West Pymble U10 17’s titles, making these 2 age groups our most prolific. A good effort given that KDSA has only actually run a competition in those age groups once each. 2007 Lindfield U12 2008 Northbridge U13 Sadly no female teams have yet won a Champion of Champions title although both Lindfield AA and Kissing Point 2010 North Sydney Bears U14 Over 30’s have lost close finals in the last few years. Hopefully a win is not far away. 2010 North Sydney AA MAA Notable achievements. 2011 North Sydney United U12 • Hornsby Heights and North Sydney United are the only clubs to have won 2 different age groups in the same 2011 North Sydney United U15 year (Hornsby Heights U13 & U16 in 1993 and North Sydney United U12 & U15 in 2011). 2012 Northbridge M35 • Chatswood Rangers won successive titles with the same team: Under 15 in 2004, Under 16 in 2005 and Under 17 in 2007. • North Sydney United almost matched this achievement with the same team winning Under 14 in 2010 as North Sydney Bears and Under 15 in 2011. • 1993 was our best year with Mt Colah adding the Under 17’s to Hornsby Heights’ two wins.
