Everyone in the US - even the Amish - makes at least some use of the fruits of science. Sokal is one of the most powerful voices in the continuing debate about the status of evidence-based knowledge. I found Sokal's critiq The only aspect of the Sokal Hoax I was aware of before I read this book was that the hoax article Sokal wrote about physics was submitted to a publication that did not subject articles to peer review. His critique would also gain more credibility from encompassing his own community: the failure of scientific institutions to address the abuse of statistical methods or promote systematic reviews is no less of a threat to progress than the ramblings of postmodernists or fundamentalists. However, he is a de The first couple of chapters the ones describing the hoax were pretty good, but after that it veers off into armchair philosophizing about the philosophy of science; it's not that I didn't agree with him on most points, but if I'm going to spend time reading about the philosophy of science, I'm going to read what a specialist says about it. -

The main body of this work can be seen as an admiration and reverence for the values and ideals associated with postmodern philosophy as well as postmodern literature. , I have argued that postmodern has mainly influenced philosophy and literature and they are recognized and praised for their multiplicity. Postmodernism might seem exclusive in its work, its emphasis on multiplicity and the decentered subject makes very uncomfortable reading for traditional theorists or philosophers. It rejects western values and beliefs as only small part of the human experience and it rejects such ideas, beliefs, culture and norms of the western. Integrity is fragmented apart into unharmonious narratives which lead to a shattering of identity and an overall breakdown of any idea of the self. Relativism and Self- reflexivity have replaced self-confidence due to the postmodern belief that all representation distorts reality. I have also referred that in a sense; postmodernism is a part of modernism we find the instantaneous coexistence of these two methods of expression and thinking, especially in visual arts and literature. Postmodern Perspectives And Shifting Legal Paradigms: Searching For A Critical Theory Of Juvenile Justice Karen L. Michaelis Department of Educational Leadership & Counseling Psychology, Washington State University, USA Abstract The tension between law’s rationality, objectivity, abstraction and principle, and feminism’s irrationality, subjectivity, contextualisation and personal nature is at the core of attempts by critical legal theorists to define a legal system that seeks justice by giving voice and credibility to heretofore silenced members of groups historically excluded or penalised for their outsider status. Outsider and feminist legal scholars have tackled the difficult issues of exclusion embedded in the law. Outsider legal scholars contend that the sameness/difference debate perpetuates racial stereotypes that justify the law’s impact on members of racial groups by ignoring the impact varying contexts have on giving meaning to an event. Similarly, feminist legal scholars have advocated for a more conscientious legal system that considers community and multiple perspectives as a means of overcoming the bias women experience when they negotiate their way through the judicial system. Both of these perspectives provide a starting point for a less mechanistic, more personal and contextualised approach to juvenile justice. But unlike women and minorities, juveniles will never have the political power to force changes in the juvenile justice system. Therefore, the author proposes that a new critical theory of juvenile justice, based on elements of both feminist and outsider legal theories, is necessary to ensure that juveniles are treated fairly and appropriately based on their unique characteristics coupled with the particular context within which the legal issue to be resolved by the justice system arose. -

Neo-Realism: Post-Postmodern Ethics and Metaphysics Cody Chun1 I. Antirealism In his presentation “Reality as Unamendableness” at the conference “On the Ashes of Post- Modernism: A New Realism,” Maurizio Ferraris demonstrated the implausibility of Friedrich Nietzsche’s constructivist thesis “There are no facts, only interpretations” by suggesting that the statement weakens if “facts” is replaced by “cats.” Doubtful of postmodern philosophy, the conference prefigured the emergence of a new realism in the aftermath of postmodernism. In what follows, I consider post-postmodernism in terms of this neo-realist turn.2 Postmodern thought can be defined by its rejection of an objective reality, or a reality that exists apart from its being thought, in favor of an understanding of reality as the product of texts (Derrida), discourses (Foucault), interpretations (Nietzsche, Vattimo), and social constructs (Berger and Luckmann). Because it rejects the idea that the world exists objectively, postmodern thought is antirealist.3 In Realism and Anti-Realism, Stuart Brock and Edwin Mares define antirealism as the philosophy that denies that anything external to thought exists. -

Hiçbir şekilde izin alınmaksızın çoğaltılamaz. 177 Çavuş Transhumanism, Posthumanism, And The “Cyborg Identity” Cennet Ceren Çavuş* The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief analysis of two confusable philosophical positions, Transhumanism and Posthumanism, and compare their approaches in terms of their social and ecological concerns through an examination of Donna Haraway’s “cyborg identity.” Haraway introduces a ground-breaking approach in A Cyborg Manifesto and her later works, which blurs the formerly defined, distinct categories and identities that underlie the oppression of animals, humans, men, women, machines etc. By using postmodernist deconstruction, she wants to challenge Western dualisms and all kinds of oppression it causes. While Transhumanists, who inherit anthropocentrism from Humanism, support technological advancement to enhance the human condition, Posthumanists draw attention to the harms of the anthropocentric approach in terms of social and ecological justice and offer a more comprehensive and compassionate approach to other species inhabiting the planet. Since both Transhumanists and Posthumanists promote enhancement, Transhumanists need Posthumanist insights to really enhance the human condition concerning her environment. -

DISTINGUISHED LECTURE PERFECTION, POSTMODERN CULTURE, AND THE BIOTECHNOEOGY DEBATE MICHAEL J. HYDE i N A T I O N A L COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION Carroll C. Arnold ^Distinguished Lecture n October 8,1994, the Administrative Committee of the National Communication Association established the Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecture. The Arnold lecture is given in ple nary session at the annual convention of the Association and features the most accomplished researchers in the field. The topic of the lecture changes annually so as to capture the wide range0 of research being conducted in the field and to demonstrate the relevance of that work to society at large. The purpose of the Arnold Lecture is to inspire not by words but by intellectual deeds. Its goal is to make the members of the Association better informed by having one of its best professionals think aloud in their presence. Over the years, the Arnold Lecture will serve as a scholarly stimulus for new ideas and new ways of approaching those ideas. The inaugural Lecture was given on November 17,1995. The Arnold Lecturer is chosen each year by the First Vice President. When choosing the Arnold Lecturer, the First Vice President is charged to select a long-standing member of NCA, a scholar of undisputed merit who has already been recognized as such, a person whose recent research is as vital and suggestive as his or her earlier work, and a researcher whose work meets or exceeds the scholarly standards of the academy generally. The Lecture has been named for Carroll C. Arnold, Professor Emeritus of Pennsylvania State University. -

Reading and Relativism An introduction to the science wars1 2 Gabriel Stolzenberg When Larry was a kid his mother…sometimes, out of curiosity, stopped the dial at a place where foreign languages came curling out of the radio’s plastic grillwork: Italian or Portuguese or Polish… “Jibber jabber,” Larry’s father called this talk, shaking his head, apparently convinced, despite all reason, that these “noises” meant nothing, that they were no more than a form of elaborate nonsense. Everything ran together; and there weren’t any real words the way there were in English. These foreigners were just pretending to talk, trying to fool everyone. (Carol Shields, Larry’s Party) Late one afternoon in the spring of 1996, I heard part of a radio interview with a physicist named Alan Sokal. It was about something he had just done. He explained that he had been inspired to do it by reading Higher Superstition, a book by Paul Gross and Norman Levitt (1994) that also inspired Robert Bork (1996). Several years earlier, a colleague had tried to persuade me to read this book by shoving it under my nose open to a page on which an opaque remark by Jacques Derrida is alleged to reveal his “eagerness to claim familiarity with deep scientific matters.” The remark begins, “The Einsteinian constant is not a constant, is not a center.” My colleague expected me to find this ridiculous but I explained that I could not find it anything because I had no idea what it means. The authors talked as if they did but they gave me no reason to believe them.3 Later, after some investigation, I concluded that not only did they not know what Derrida meant, they probably did not care.
