Various reasons for these removals have been given by history writers. Some of the reasons usually found include the following: Because of Black Hawk's War the settlers were afraid of the Indians and wanted them removed; in order to build canals and roads the Indians' lands were needed; the removal of the Indians was a natural result of the popu- lation increase in Indiana; the Indians were removed because of trouble which developed between the races; and so on.

By the Mississinewa treaty of 1826 a goodly portion of northern Indiana was transferred to the United States for a price that would at this day, perhaps, be equivalent to a few city lots, and the fol- lowing clear gift, specified in Article I1 oi the treaty, was se- cured by way of good measure. The article reads: “As an evidence of the attachment ~hichthe Pottawattaniie tribe feel toward the American people, and particularly to the soil of Indiana, and with a view to demonstrate their liberality and benefit themselves by creating facilities for traveling aiid increasing the value of their remaining country, the said tribe do hereby cede to the United States a strip of land, connecting at Lake Michigan and running thence to the Wabash river, one hundred feet wide, for a road; and also one section of good land contiguous to said road for each mile of the same and also €or each mile of a road from termination thereof, through Indian- apolis, to some convenient point on the Ohio river. And the General Assembly of the State of Indiana shall have a right to locate the said road and apply the said sections, or the proceeds thereof, to the making of the same, or any part thereof; and the said road shall be at their sole disposal.” The hand of the beneficiaries would seem to be very plain in this.

    MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION 2021-2025 FIVE-YEAR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM Approved by the State Transportation Commission on January 21, 2021 Letter from Director Paul Ajegba Dear Reader: I present to you the 2021-2025 Five-Year Transportation Program, a summary of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) stewardship of highway, bridge, public transit, rail, aviation, marine, and nonmotorized programs and resources. This past year presented many challenges to our great state. The structure of transportation funding in Michigan is built upon the sale of fuel. When the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order was put into place to slow the spread of COVID-19, gas tax receipts were noticeably impacted when traffic volumes dropped by more than 50 percent from February to April. Daily volumes have yet to rebound completely as we continue to find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic. This document contains a list of planned highway projects that will utilize all available state and federal revenue for this time period. In addition, this document contains details about the investments being made in the passenger transportation, aviation, and rail programs throughout the state, which are critical to Michigan’s economic health and the provision of a diversity of mobility options statewide. This transportation program represents $16.4 billion in multi-modal transportation investments, which includes Rebuilding Michigan program bond funds. Gov. Whitmer initiated the bonding proposal to address critical infrastructure needs that otherwise would have taken many years to implement. In these trying times, MDOT will continue to maintain stewardship of the transportation infrastructure under its care with the resources that are currently available.

    The Indians and the Michigan Road Juanita Hunter* The United States Confederation Congress adopted on May 20, 1785, an ordinance that established the method by which the fed- eral government would transfer its vast, newly acquired national domain to private ownership. According to the Land Ordinance of 1785 the first step in this transferral process was purchase by the government of all Indian claims. In the state of Indiana by 1821 a series of treaties had cleared Indian title from most land south of the Wabash River. Territory north of the river remained in the hands of the Miami and Potawatomi tribes, who retained posses- sion of at least portions of the area until their removals from the state during the late 1830s and early 1840s.’ After a brief hiatus following 1821, attempts to secure addi- tional cessions of land from the Indians in Indiana resumed in 1826. In the fall of that year three commissioners of the United States government-General John Tipton, Indian agent at Fort Wayne; Lewis Cass, governor of Michigan Territory; and James Brown Ray, governor of Indiana-met with leading chiefs and warriors of the Potawatomi and Miami tribes authorized in part “to propose an exchange of land. acre for acre West, of the Mississippi . .’’z The final treaty, signed October 26, 1826, contained no provision for complete Indian removal from the state. NATURE’S CHARMS PRESERVED Consistent Course by Which Effects of Serenity, Peace and Seclusion Have Been Maintained. “The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.” So wrote the English poet Shelley concerning the Protestant cemetery in Rome, in which by a strange coincidence, he himself was finally laid to rest. The same thought would apply in some degree to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Not that it is “an open space among ruins,” like the little cemetery at Rome, for though it is surrounded by all the marks of modern progress. The atmosphere of sacred seclusion that pervades the inclosure seems to say to the waves of worldly activity that surround its borders, “Thus far shalt thou come but no farther.” The living who pass its portals fine themselves at once in an atmosphere entirely distinct from that they left behind, and the dead who find their final resting place amid its quiet borders must feel grateful, if the dead experience human emotions, that their mortal remains have been buried in so sweet a place. Crown Hill cemetery is a product of evolution, and is typical of the growth of Indianapolis through various stages from a frontier settlement to a straggling village, a capital in the woods, a sleepy country town, a prosperous railroad center, a robust community feeling its strength and demanding recognition, to a metropolitan city of national fame.
