COURSE DESCRIPTION The purpose of Web Page Design is to provide instructions on creating and maintaining a web page for publishing on the Internet. Students will use an HTML editor (FrontPage) to author pages that include text and graphics. An introduction into editing graphics for Web Pages will also be covered. Students will have hands-on experience through a laboratory approach in creating and maintaining a web page. This course is designed for students interested in that may become responsible for designing a Web in his/her career field. Students will learn such Web preparation steps as defining the purpose; creating a Web structure; layout design with text, hyperlinks, images and tables; publishing a FrontPage Web; and researching and gathering information. FrontPage will be the primary HTML editor used to create Web pages. Other areas of focus will include design considerations as well as hyperlink and multimedia analysis. Additional applications such as Flash and Fireworks may be utilized time permitting.

PRE-/CO-REQUISITE A familiarity with and the Internet would be helpful; however, there is no pre/co-requisite.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS 1. Students will create a Web Page on a topic of their choice; outcomes will be demonstrated in a final project at the end of the class period. 2. Students will gain knowledge from demonstrations, presentations, lectures and hands-on tutorials. Students will also be introduced to three learning theories: cognitive, Behavioral and Constructive. Each learning theory will focus on the individual learning pattern. 3. A class web site will also supply the student with tutorials and guidance.

STUDENTS REQUIREMENTS AND METHOD OF EVALUATION 1. Students will need at least 3 floppy disks 1.4 mg for saving work and graphics as well as 1 CD-RW to save entire Web project onto. 2. Students will need one folder to keep handouts and other printed documents. 3. Students will complete and publish a Web Page by using the following procedures:

A 5-Page Web that includes the following:

a. Formatted text (color, size and position) 25 i. Spelling and grammar 10 b. Hyper-links are functional and are consistent 10 c. Rollover effects 5 d. Internal and External Links 5 e. One FrontPage component 10 f. Mailto link 5 g. Backgrounds on each page and are consistent, themes and consistent colors 50 h. Images on each page 10 i. Proper use of tables 25 j. NCCC staff may work on professional Web Site, as long as each lab is completed and knowledge of the procedure is evident.

4. Students will have Internet capabilities and must be able to find valid quality and know the difference between copyrighted images. Student must also know how to critique Web Pages and will understand searching techniques. 5. Student will be expected to attend class, participate in class discussions, and complete lessons and exercises provided by the instructor.

GRADING SCALE In evaluating the student for grade attainment, a grade assignment of Pass or Not Pass will be made.

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT GAIN A pre and post Web Page design exercise will be completed and compared to measure gain in competency at the end of the course. The student will be evaluated on the completion of a Web Page for publication to the Internet and on their ability to critique their Web Pages.

ATTENDANCE POLICY Unless students are participating in a school activity or are excused by the instructor, they are expected to attend class. If a student’s unexcused absences exceed one-hundred (100) minutes per credit hour for the course, the instructor has the right, but is not required, to withdraw a student from the course. Once the student has been dropped for excessive absences, the dean of student services/registrar’s office will send a letter to the student, stating that he or she has been dropped. A student may petition the chief academic officer for reinstatement by submitting a letter stating valid reasons for the absences within one week of the dean of student services/registrar’s notification. If the student is reinstated into the class, the instructor will be notified.

Academic Integrity

NCCC expects every student to demonstrate ethical behavior with regard to academic pursuits. Academic integrity in the classroom is a specific requirement. Consequences of violation of the Academic Integrity policy can range from redoing the assignment for partial credit to course dismissal at the discretion of the instructor. Cell Phone Policy Student cell phones and pagers must be turned off during class times. Faculty may approve an exception for special circumstances.

VOCATIONAL/CAREER COURSE DOCUMENTATION This course is one course from the approved program in Vocational Business, Office, and Information Systems. It is taken by those who wish to further develop office management skills and by those who seek positions in the administrative office field.

ADVISORY COUNCIL INVOLVEMENT The Business, Office, and Information Systems program maintains a Board of Reference for this vocational component. The coordinator communicates with the Board on a regular basis concerning issues or problems that occur and meets with the group one or two times each year.
