Bat Distribution in the Forested Region of Northwestern California

Based on museum and literature records, seventeen species were known to occur in this region. All seventeen were identified during this study: fourteen by capture and release, and three by acoustic detection only (Euderma maculatum, Eumops perotis, and Lasiurus blossevillii). Mist-netting was conducted at nineteen sites in a six county area. There were marked differences among sites both in the number of individuals captured per unit effort and the number of species encountered. The five most frequently encountered species in net captures were: Myotis yumanensis, Lasionycteris noctivagans, Myotis lucifugus, Eptesicus fuscus, and Myotis californicus; the five least common were Pipistrellus hesperus, Myotis volans, Lasiurus cinereus, Myotis ciliolabrum, and Tadarida brasiliensis. Twelve species were confirmed as having reproductive populations in the study area. Sampling sites were assigned to a habitat class: young growth (YG), multi-age stand (MA), old growth (OG), and rock dominated (RK). There was a significant response to habitat class for the number of bats captured, and a trend towards differences for number of species detected. -

Horton RNA covers approximately 1305 acres of eastwardly-facing slopes above the North Fork of the Smith River in extreme northwestern California. The area lies just four miles from the Oregon border and includes portions of Sections 24, 25, and 36 T. 18 N. R. 11 W. (Latitude 41' 55' N., Longitude 124' W.) Elevations range from ca. 600 ft. along the North Fork of the Smith River to slightly over 2400 ft. along the ridgetop south of the Stone Corral site. Terrain is steep and rugged in most of the southern and central portions of the study area, but becomes more gradual in the northern portion (see location map). It is in this northern area that the Darlfngtonia bogs occur (discussed as bog forest in the vegetation section). In addition to the Darlingtonia bogs (Figure 1) the site contains several other vegetation types including dwarf forest, Jeffrey pine woodland, lower dwarf forest, canyon forest, Douglas-fir forest, and two types of riparian vegetation. -

There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Inclusion of extra material in online editions only. Do you object to having extra material in the online edition which can not be included in the printed edition? Smithsonian Contri- butions to Botany, number 52, 28 pages, 3 tables, 1981.-Chromosome reports are provided for 145 populations, including first reports for 33 species and three genera, Garcilassa, Riencourtia, and Helianthopsis. Chromosome numbers are arranged according to Robinson’s recently broadened concept of the Heliantheae, with citations for 212 of the ca. 265 genera and 32 of the 35 subtribes. Diverse elements, including the Ambrosieae, typical Heliantheae, most Helenieae, the Tegeteae, and genera such as Arnica from the Senecioneae, are seen to share a specialized cytological history involving polyploid ancestry. The authors disagree with one another regarding the point at which such polyploidy occurred and on whether subtribes lacking higher numbers, such as the Galinsoginae, share the polyploid ancestry. Numerous examples of aneuploid decrease, secondary polyploidy, and some secondary aneuploid decreases are cited. The Marshalliinae are considered remote from other subtribes and close to the Inuleae. Evidence from related tribes favors an ultimate base of X = 10 for the Heliantheae and at least the subfamily As teroideae. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -

We hypothesized that the Sacramento, Smith, Klamath, and Rogue River watersheds would represent distinct genetic populations based on prior ecological results, which suggest that Black Salamanders avoid high elevations such as the ridges that separate watersheds. Our mitochondrial results revealed two major lineages, one in the Sacramento River watershed, and another containing the Klamath, Smith, and Rogue River watersheds. -

Results of apomixis, vegetative reproduction, breeding studies, and artifi• cial hybridizations are given. Geologists come here to refine the theory of plate tectonics. Yet, the Klamath Mountains are one of the least-known parts of the state. A LIST OF THE VASCULAR PLANTS ENDEMIC TO THE KLAMATH-SISKIYOU REGION OF CALIFORNIA AND OREGON James P. Smith, Jr. & John O. Sawyer, Jr. † Department of Biological Sciences Humboldt State University February 2020 In California, the Klamath-Siskiyou Region includes all or portions of Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity counties. In Oregon, it includes all or portions of Curry, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine counties. The region is the home of 215 endemics. No family of vascular plants is endemic here. Kalmiopsis is endemic to Oregon, Howellanthus to California, and Bensoniella to both states. There are 103 taxa restricted to northwestern California; 38 taxa to southwestern Oregon; and 74 taxa endemic to the region in both states. We have excluded taxa that are based on suspect far-out- of-range collections, presumed extinct, or that were otherwise anomalous.
