Marshall Thos., and maltster Hannen Ths. *Barnes Chs. OVER WALLOP, or Upper Wallop, is a scattered village, 6 miles W.N. W. of Stockbridge, and 3 miles 8. of Grately Station. Its parish includes Tower Hill and Hampshire Gap, on the borders of Wiltshire, a.nd cont.ajns 555 souls, and 4632 acres of land. It also includes part of the village of Middle Wallop, a.nd about 400 acres of open heath. The Earl of Portsmouth owns most of the soil and is lord of the manor, which was held by his ancestors, the Wallops, as early as the Saxon era. (See Hurstbourne Park) But there are many small freeholds in the parish belonging to various families. The CHuRCH (St. Peter) is nn ancient structure, with a tower and four bells; and the benefice is a rectory, valued inK. B. at .£27.' os. lld., and now at .£398, in the patronage of the Earl of Portsmouth, a.nd incllm­ bency of the Rev. Hy. John Fellowes, 1\LA., who has a large Rectory House, which was rebuilt in 1853, at the cost of £1600. The School was built in 1853, at the cost of £255, a.nd is supported by the rector. There is a small Baptist Chapel, erected in 1841, near Middle Wallop. The poor of Over Wallop have a share of Rede's Charity, as noticed with Nether Wallop. They have also two yearly doles, viz., £5 left by one Pyle, out of )and belonging to the Titt family; and .£2 out of Drake'a tenement, left by Edward Pyle, in 1707, to provide two green coats. Howard Silas 11 Pyle Henry WEST DEAN is a village and township, with a railway station, 7t miles E. by S. of Salisbury, and 9 miles W.N.W. of Romsey, and contains 3459 acres of land, and 308 inhabitants. Part of it is in Thorngate Hundred and Romsey Division of South Hants, and the remajnder is in Wiltshire, but the whole of it is in Stock­ bridge Union. Its parish includes also East Grimstead township and chapelry, which is all in Wiltshire. Thos. Baring, Esq., is lord of the manor and owner of a great part of the parish. The CHURCH (St. 1\iary) stands in Wiltshire, and is in the diocese of Salisbury. It is a small fabric, with a wooden belfry and three bells. The benefice is a rectory, valued in K.B. at .£19. 4s. 4j-d., a.nd now at £700, with the curacy of East Grimstead annexed to it, in the patronage of the Rev. Henry Glossop, and incumbency of the Rev. Fra.ncis Glossop, M.A., who has about lOO acres of glebe, a.nd a large Rectory House. Post via Romsey. TRAINS eight times a day to all parts. CARRIERs pass to Romsey, Salisbury, &c.     07 Cunliffe 1686 13/11/09 13:48 Page 161 ALBERT RECKITT ARCHAEOLOGICAL LECTURE Continuity and Change in a Wessex Landscape BARRY CUNLIFFE Fellow of the Academy THE WESSEX LANDSCAPE with which we are concerned is an area of some 450 sq km of chalkland situated in the centre of the chalk uplands of southern Britain (Fig. 1). Its central position gives it a special character. It is, above all, a route node where the east–west ridgeways from the North Downs, the South Downs, Cranborne Chase and the Marlborough Downs converge with the north–south river routes, the Avon and the Test, which provide access, through the forests and heathlands of the Hampshire Basin, to the waters of the Solent beyond. But there is an ambivalence about the region. While open to influences from all direc- tions, this very openness endowed it with a strategic significance well understood by those who, in the past, wished to control the movements of peoples and commodities. As we will argue below, the region became a frontier zone for much of the latter part of the first millennium BC, dividing east from west. This block of downland was chosen for detailed study partly because of its commanding position in the landscape of central southern Britain but also because previous archaeological activity has provided an exten- sive database invaluable in developing a detailed research strategy. Most notable among the earlier work were the pre-war excavations of the Cunningtons and J. F. S. Stone focusing on Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements in eastern Wiltshire and the campaign of hillfort excavations Read at the Academy 23 October 2008.
