Bigfresh Presspack.Pdf Big Fresh, a ten-member art/pop collective, has expanded like the universe since 2009’s ambitious ​ home-recorded B.F.F. (Big Fresh Forever); they’ve been joined by new singers and ​ ​ multi-instrumentalists Faith Diamond (Satellite Giant) and Kimberly Smith (Bear Medicine, Frigid ​ ​ ​ Kitty). ​ With John Ferguson and Ben Phelan having joined world-touring indie band The Apples in ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ stereo (and Ferguson contributing substantially on their most recent record), Big Fresh shows have ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ been sighted, but are farther between—yet in the studio, madly writing and producing, the band has evolved like a star cluster. The result is a stellar LP lying in a galactic sector between Tusk and R. Stevie Moore. Adding horns and ​ ​ ​ ​ the lush voices of Diamond and Smith into their elaborate arrangements, brings out the Fleetwood ​ ​ ​ Mac influence on Big Fresh, and the R. Stevie Moore element is no accident: Vocalist/songwriter John ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ Ferguson spent his childhood having the hyper-creative lo-fi pioneer as a sort of uncle, appearing ​ on Moore’s recordings and immersed in his process. Moore contributed guitar parts to the album. ​ ​ ​ ​ Big Fresh’s newest EP, Fall Preview, is self-produced by the Kentucky avant-garde pop collective and ​ ​ engineered by electro-wizard Craig Morris in his hand-built Garden Gate Studio (The Apples in ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ stereo, Thee American Revolution, Deathray Davies, Neutral Milk Hotel, Laminated Cat), the new ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ album explodes with inventive catchiness and production details. In dieser Zeit mutierten seine Lieder mit der Band Neutral Milk Hotel zu Hymnen für Trostsuchende und Widerständige. Nun spielen Neutral Milk Hotel wieder Konzerte. Eine Spurensuche. Er taucht auf wie ein Geist. Ein hünenhafter Geist, ausgestattet mit einem Wollpulli, einer Schirmmütze, halblangen Haaren und einer akustischen Gitarre. Die Akkorde schlägt er hart an, und die Stimme erzählt von Wiedergeburten, von Flugzeugen über dem Meer, die Leichenasche abwerfen und von siamesischen Zwillingen, die in Flaschen eingeschlossen sind und dennoch ein Stückchen Liebe finden werden, irgendwann im Jenseits. Die ZeugInnen dieser Erscheinung singen all diese verklausulierten Erzählungen mit, ergänzen die Bänkellieder mit dem Nachsingen der abwesenden Bläsersätze, und feiern ihren unwahrscheinlichen Propheten, als würde er nach diesem knapp vierzigminütigen Auftritt wieder für zehn Jahre untertauchen. «You guys have done a beautiful fucking thing», sagt er zum Abschied, hier, an diesem Abend im New Yorker Zuccotti Park, wo die Occupy Wall Street-AktivistInnen versammelt sind.
