Naomi: “You have given me back my life, ames. I was in a bad place with the pain and medications and just could not see a way out of that place.”

Page 30 - Howard & District Progress Association Inc December 2019 THE NATUROPATH SAYS: The science surrounding bowel flora is evolving.

I have had a pretty good response from people who have read my monthly informational write-up on health, so I am pleased there are a few people who do want to become healthier and live a pain free life without pharmaceutical drugs. Much encouraged, I will give out some more of the recent discoveries in heath matters. We need to look after our good bacteria (bowel flora) that live in our intestines, for they form a large part of our immune system as well as manufacturing some of the B Vitamins and absorbing nutrients. Yet if we drink chlorinated water, or worse, fluoridated water, we wipe them out in trillions. Like Daleks saying “Exterminate”, antibiotics finish them off too. Not to mention stress hormones travelling through, or alcohol, the poor little guys are fighting a losing battle. By restoring healthy bowel micro-organisms HOME you can obtain some pretty impressive health VISITS benefits. Think of them as your internal $35 garden. Like the insects and bees that used to Phone 4121 7751 be around before people began spraying glyphosate (Roundup), your inner garden needs to be cared for. Disrupted bowel flora (dysbiosis) is now very common, for example up to 85% of people with irritable bowel syndrome have dysbiosis, while acid-blocking drugs prescribed for reflux cause small intestinal bacterial overgrowth of the wrong kind. If you have an autoimmune condition, prediabetes, diabetes, constipation it is virtually guaranteed you have dysbiosis. We have to replace the good guys, or at least send them some more Colony Forming Units and the food they need to survive. I have some good quality probiotics from Metagenics and I will also donate with them a sample of my homemade yogurt which has billions of a very special healing probiotic. I will educate you how to make your own yogurt with this. It is delicious too.

If you would like to phone me to arrange a suitable time to come in for a chat, or even to have Iridology done to look at the whole body, I will be pleased to give out some more very interesting information.

Susan Ascott-Evans. Phone 0438724345.

Will this Christmas be a blessing and a time of Joy for you? Will you catch up with family and friends, eat a little too much, celebrate a little too much? Or is Christmas a sad time for you? Can’t do it like the neighbours do, miss someone who can’t be with you, it’s all a load of humbug anyhow. Will you celebrate the birth of a baby in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, sing about reindeer and snow in this dry and dusty land, go on holidays, travel overseas, how will you end 2019 as we enter 2020? As for me I will celebrate a living and powerful Jesus Christ the Son of a living God, who gave me a gift many years ago by restoring my family ties with the Creator of this world and the universe it floats in, who created me for a purpose, who fills me with Life in abundance, with Joy and Love and Peace which cannot be explained. I was a dead man walking, stumbling along trying to make sense of this existence, trying to make my way through this life. Lacking better alternatives I tried to fill the emptiness inside me with things and people but nothing really worked. Like the singer sang, I did it my way, and in doing so had some fun, hurt some people and friended others, but couldn’t fill the emptiness, something is missing! Then I came to understand that I was separated from our creator God, that Jesus the Son of God fulfilled all the requirements for my restoration into God’s family, and I prayed a prayer like the one below and the emptiness was filled, I found my purpose and now I am learning to walk with God into a wonderful eternal life. So Christmas 2019 will be another celebration of the gift God gave me so many years ago. Why not accept this wonderful gift from God for yourself this Christmas? Pray now, Loving God I accept your gift to me this Christmas season, I am sorry that I don’t know you, but I want to get to know you and to know you are real. Please send the Spirit of Your Son to live in me and restore my life’s purpose to live in fellowship and communion with you. Thankyou for sending your Son to set me free. Fill the emptiness in my life now as I receive you now, In Jesus Name Amen.

PEACE CELEBRATION William Street 26th July

The Centenary of the first Remembrance Day was well attended. The Students from Torbanlea and Howard State Schools participated in a poppy laying ceremony at the cemetery and afterwards placed wreaths at the cenotaph. A bus was organised for the Torbanlea students and the Howard Students rode their bikes in a convoy to the cemetery. After the service the RSL supplied a sausage sizzle. Thanks must be extend to George and Trevor for organising this part of the programme. We will endeavour to repeat the student cemetery ceremony every year and sincerely thank the teachers for their cooperation and participation. Our Piper (coincidently a former world champion) must also receive special acknowledgement along with our host of volunteer members as well as those ’borrowed’ from the Community Centre. Finally, most grateful thanks to all the people of Howard/Torbanlea & surrounds who attended the 100th Anniversary of Remembrance Day.

December 2019 Burrum River News - Page 55 Part Two Life & Times of Andrew Fisher

On a June day in 1885, the Fisher brothers together with half a dozen or so other local miners, assembled at Kilmarnock railway station were the where seen off by family and friends. Andrew Fishers would often recall his father last words, “I wish you every success in honest industry”. They set off on what was then an 8 week risky journey with just over 400 other migrants for Queensland on the steamship ‘SS New Guinea’, bound across the oceans from their native Scotland, to an uncertain new life in the colony of Queensland not knowing if they would ever return to their native land and loved ones.

The steamer New Guinea first docked at Rockhampton then Maryborough before arriving in Brisbane on 17th August 1885, after a short period in Ipswich looking for work, they were told of the governments need for experienced miners for the recently opened coal fields on the Burrum River just north of Maryborough. Andrew Fisher arrived in Maryborough carrying only his few meagre possessions but looked every bit a Scot, tall handsome, sandy haired, his calloused hands bearing witness to the years of hard labour, although only 22 years of age. He was confident for his future in this strange new land down-under, which was now his home. His confidence came not only from the hard manual toil down the Ayrshire coal pits from the age of ten, but his self-education, life and social skills he had acquired after working up to 12 hours underground at home or in the local Miners Institute.

Coal had been discovered on the Burrum by three local men Whitley, Steley and Howard in 1877, and by the time Fisher arrived in the township in 1885 that was named after Howard, the Burrum Coalfield was at fever pitch, with the railway having finally crossing the Burrum River in 1883 connecting Maryborough and Howard. Many of the local land owners carrying out get rich quick trial bores for coal on their properties, syndicates being formed and speculators trying to acquire land in the hope of striking coal also many other get rich quick schemes. One very successful speculator was James Robertson; a Scot born in Tolcross Scotland, he first took a lease of 700 acres of Crown Land south of the Burrum River then applied for the deeds of a land grant in an area of a dip 3 miles south of the river. On acquiring the rights his companies “Torbane Lea Mine”, he sank the first of three production shafts striking coal seams with all three shafts, No 1 by far the richest, (Now that’s a canny Scot).

In his youth Robertson had been employed on the Torbane Hill Mine in the West of Scotland and possibly with this in mind he named his mine Torbane Lea , just south of Howard, which was quickly corrupted by common usage to Torbanlea. It was also around this time that Queensland Collieries Company Limited, the largest mine on the Burrum coal field appointed a Scot, William Rankin, a 45 year old mining engineer from Galston in Ayrshire, who had over 25 years experience in colliery management that included a period of mining in NSW. Rankin was not only appointed as the mine manager, but had the authority of the directors and debenture holders; in fact he was what today would be referred to as a CEO. Rankin was so successful that the company built him a large family home “Brooklyn House” in Howard, and the name Rankin is still emotionally involved with Howard and coal in Queensland to this day.

It was into this highly charged atmosphere of mining and all the associated industries that Andrew Fisher arrived in Howard in August 1885. At first, he found work as an ordinary miner in Robertson Torbane Lea mine, not long after a group of miners that included Andrew Fisher formed the Briton Coal Company of there own and began sinking a mine shaft near Maria Creek in Howard. When it reached coal at a depth of 325 feet and well over a thousand pounds had been spent (a lot of money in 1885), the syndicate ran out of funds and all work ceased. In 1886 it attempted to float a public company to restart work on the mine, but there was little support and the group disbanded. Not deterred by this set back, he invested in the Dudley Coal and Investment Company, as back home in his native Scotland as in all of Britain; collieries were owed and controlled only by the aristocracy or gentry never by the working man, so for a miner to own a share of the mine he worked, was much to Fishers liking. About this time Robertson offered Andrew Fisher the post of overseer of the Torbanlea mine, as Robertson was himself fast becoming the leading entrepreneur in the Burrum district, having just launched the Torbanlea Coal Company, allocating preference shares to himself while still continuing to hold freehold of the land, he was also involved in the Isis Investment Company that had purchased their own steam collier, the Kingsway to carry their coal down the Burrum and along the Queensland coast. James Robertson seeing in this tall stanch Presbyterian Scot an honest man, he offered him the post of Overseer of his No 1 Torbanlea Mine that Fisher gladly accepted.

Page 56 - Howard & District Progress Association Inc December 2019 It was during this time that Andrew Fisher built his first home in Watkins Street in Howard (that is still in use to day as a family home little changed over years). With his new home his prospects looked bright and he was coming to terms with the relative isolation and unprepossessing surroundings of the Burrum District. Although Fisher did privately disapprove of the drunkenness of many of his fellow minters also the lack of civilised conversation or social intercourse within the Howard Shire, he never endeavoured to push his Presbyterian believes or political views on his fellow miners. Although the Torbanlea mine under Fishers supervision was enjoying record efficiency, all was not going well between Robertson and Andrew Fisher, as Fisher was more concerned about the welfare and safety of the miners than profits. His particular concern was for his miners due to the poor ventilation also the dangers from gas within the workings with the ventilation shut off when the mine was not in use.

Due to his success in proactivity and safety record of the Torbanlea mine, he decided to apply for the vacant management position at The Queensland Collieries that he knew he was well qualified for, but when a far lesser qualified man was given the post by William Rankin, as Rankin was fully conversant with Fishers Union activity back home in Scotland, as both Fisher and Rankin being from the Scottish Boarders, Fisher from down the pits and union rep, whereas Rankin came from the gentry and management. It left him with the feeling that the ghosts of his Black Listing were still haunting him, coupled with spending weeks trying to get money still own to him from Robertson after he resigned his post. This convinced Fisher to leave the Burrum coalfields and his newly built home in Howard to try his luck in Gympie and Goldmining. It was not just the humiliation of being passed over by Rankin, he also missed the company of like mined people, also the civilised though humble life he had he had enjoyed in Kilmarnock that was sadly lacking within the Howard Shire, also the notable lack of intellectual conversation and suitable female company. Therefore, in April 1888 Fisher sold his house and left Howard for Gympie and the civilisation that he longed for, like musical groups, debating societies, the

Kirk, libraries, various other church friendly societies and newspapers he had so terrible missed on the Burrum Coal Fields.

In Gympie though it meant starting all over again, he felt no regrets leaving the rather dull Burrum for the more enlightened and cosmopolitan Gympie gold mining community. Gympie was much to his liking, as it was a town where miners not only held shares in the mines in which they worked, but sometimes even served as directors, something that just could not have happened back in Great Britain, and most certainly not in his native Scotland.

On arriving in Gympie, Fisher soon found work in the highly productive Phoenix No 1 gold mine also he was offered lodgings with a Scottish mining family in the Red Hill area of the town that was then dominantly Scottish. Red Hill boasted a Presbyterian Kirk, a Hibernian hall with its own band also Friendly societies that not only provided some insurance against injury, illness and death, but also organised both social and sporting gatherings. It was not long before he found himself not only involved in the local community but also taking a leading role in many of the organisations, like becoming secretary to the local chess club and the friendly society also the Oddfellows Lodge, he even enlisted in the local Volunteer Force which organised military training during the limited free time enjoyed by the miners, alas this necessitate parading on the Sabbath, this Andrew Fisher had no real problem with, as he believed it was for the good of not only the community but also the defence of Queensland if necessary. It was after only his first military training deployment, the sole objective was to travel up the Mary River on a Sunday morning, then being ordered to march from bar to bar and being commanded to serve beer to each member of the unit. He promptly resigned after writing a strong letter of protest to the local newspaper.
