    Introduction The records listed in this volume are what might be described as central records of the College – the minute books, the registers, the statutes and similar material, generated directly by the Provost and Fellows and the New Governing Body. There are, however, equally central records listed elsewhere. The Foundation and Consolidation Charters, and other royal charters, were listed by Noel Blakiston as ECR 39. He included other central records, particularly relating to the building of the College, in ECR 38 and ECR 49. Accounting records to 1642, including the audit rolls up to 1505, when they were replaced by books, are listed as ECR 61 and later accounting records as ECR 62. Papers produced by individual Provosts, Vice-Provosts and Fellows (though there are very few of this last category) will be found as COLL/P, COLL/VP or COLL/FELL as appropriate. The papers of officers such as the Bursar (COLL/B), Registrar(COLL/REG) and other College servants are also separately listed. The catalogue of the College’s archives (now COLL/ARCH/1) compiled in 1724 by Thomas Martin (1697 – 1771) mentions the central records that existed at the time but does not list them individually. Binding, indexing and annotation of the registers in particular show clearly that their importance and value were recognised. Seal books, minute books and lease books were also carefully preserved. However, unbound papers were less well served by a storage system that was essentially organised by estate and were allowed to accumulate in considerable confusion until very roughly sorted by Noel Blakiston into boxes covering ten year periods.

THE following account of the Cathedral Church of Durham was addressed to the members of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club and the Durham and Northumberland Archaeological and Architectural Society, at a joint meeting of the Societies, held in the Cathedral, on September 24, 1879. This will explain the form under which it appears, and, it is to be hoped, excuse the colloquial and somewhat desultory way in which the subject is treated. It was not the intention of the author of the address, when it was given, that it should appear in any other form than that of an abstract in the Transactions of the Societies to which it was delivered. Several of his friends, however, have thought that printed in externa it might be of service as a Guide Book to the Cathedral, and supply what has been too long wanting in illustration of the Church of Durham. To this wish he has assented, but with some reluctance, feeling how inadequate is such a treatment of a subject so important. Some additional matter has been supplied in the notes which will help to make it more useful than it was in its original form.

    John Burton, D.D., one of the Founders of the Colony of Georgia by H. B. FANT of the U.S. National Archives ITH an area equalling that of England and Wales combined, Georgia W touches the Atlantic seaboard of the United States just north of the Florida peninsula. The basis of this Empire State of the South, to-day the largest state east of the Mississippi river, was laid in 1732 when King George II chartered the Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in America. These patriots and philanthropists, of whom James Edward Ogle­ thorpe was a leader, undertook without gain to themselves-their motto was ~ non sibi, sed aliis-to erect a haven for poverty-stricken Englishmen and perse­ . cuted European protestants. The new province was designed as a buffer ·· · ·.'· between the southernmost existing settlements of Carolina and the ever-present I··· menace of Spanish-occupied Florida.1 The almost forgotten but nevertheless earnest colleagues of Oglethorpe included Dr. John Burton, the scholarly teacher, the persuasive preacher, and the versatile author whose life was linked for all of his maturity with the Univer­ sity of Oxford. In his career Burton fell just short of real greatness; but even at that-since he was importantly connected with Eton College too-he was, according to Lyte, • by far the most distinguished Fellow of Eton in the middle of the eighteenth century.'2 Burton's cousin, Edward Bentham, Regius Pro­ fessor of Divinity at Oxford, published in 1771 a biographical sketch in Latin,S of which an English epitome' came out in The Gentleman's Magazine.

    List of British Consular Officials in the Ottoman Empire and its former territories, from the sixteenth century to about 1860 July 2011 Introduction The following list has grown from a set of rough notes compiled by David Wilson while he was helping to catalogue the papers of Sir John Elijah Blunt at the University of Birmingham. The original aim was simply to identify people mentioned in those papers, but it soon became obvious that they were connected by a complicated network of family relationships extending over several generations. A more detailed account of those most closely connected with the Blunt family is being prepared separately, but it is hoped this draft list may be useful for people researching other families or particular consulates, since there does not appear to be a single reliable source of information with such a wide coverage. In preparing this list, it was found that many of the sources are unreliable, incomplete or contradictory; this led to the adoption of a format which tries to show clearly where each piece of information came from. This does produce a rather cluttered effect, with a lot of brackets, but it makes it simple to remove redundant material or insert new as the project develops. Quite a lot of material from earlier drafts has already been removed as the picture became clearer. The aim has been to include all appointments from the foundation of the Levant Company in 1581 up to 1 Jan 1860, although some later appointments are also listed. The end point was chosen as being a time after the Crimean War when the Levant Consular Service had more or less settled down after the various upheavals that followed the transfer from the Levant Company to the Foreign Office.
