Buddhist ethics are rooted in compassion, and ani- mal industries in the West are shockingly cruel. So why do so many West- ern Buddhists eat meat, and even defend the practice? In The Great Com- passion: Buddhism and Animal Rights (Lantern 2004), Norm Phelps ex- plores Buddhist ethics in relation to dietary practices. Pluhar Accepted: 30 November 2009 / Published online: 18 December 2009 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009 Abstract Scientists have shown that the practice of factory farming is an increasingly urgent danger to human health, the environment, and nonhuman animal welfare. For all these reasons, moral agents must consider alternatives. Vegetarian food production, humane food animal farming, and in-vitro meat production are all explored from a variety of ethical perspectives, especially utilitarian and rights- based viewpoints, all in the light of current U.S. and European initiatives in the public and private sectors. It is concluded that vegetarianism and potentially in-vitro meat production are the best-justified options. The timing was perhaps not coincidental. In spring 2008, the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production completed a two-year investigation of factory- farming practices in the United States. At the end of its 1,100-page report, the Commission recommended a ten-year timeline for the termination of the most intensive production techniques, including battery cages, gestation crates, and force- feeding birds to harvest their fatty livers for foie gras (Hunger Notes 2008). -

Despite the worsening situation of the pandemic globally and throughout Southeast Asia, with 45,2091 human coronavirus infections in the region to date, the mass trafficking, sale, and slaughter of companion animals often alongside wild animals throughout the Kingdom continues unchallenged. The dog meat trade is rampant in Cambodia, involving the slaughter and consumption of up to 3 million dogs each year, many of them stolen pets, with an unknown number trafficked regularly into neighboring Vietnam. Research suggests that only 12% of Cambodians regularly consume dog meat, and consumption remains a controversial practice among Khmer people.2 The dog meat trade has proven to be a significant threat to public health, facilitating the transmission of deadly diseases including rabies, cholera, and trichinella. The trade also directly undermines Cambodia’s rabies control efforts and disrupts any attempts at achieving herd immunity through mass canine vaccination programs. Despite growing global public health concerns regarding live animal interfaces and wet markets and the potential for the emergence of novel and deadly viruses, the dog meat trade in Cambodia continues to operate - even in the face of mounting calls to end this trade. -

Thibodeau, pm, Ph.D.* Writer-in-Residence, Department of English, Rivier University Today, more animals suffer at human hands than at any other time in history. It is therefore not surprising that an intense and controversial debate is taking place over the status of the 60+ billion animals raised and slaughtered for food worldwide every year. To keep up with the high demand for meat, industrialized nations employ modern processes generally referred to as “factory farming.” This article focuses on factory farming in the United States because the United States inaugurated this approach to farming, because factory farming is more highly sophisticated here than elsewhere, and because the government agency overseeing it, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), publishes abundant readily available statistics that reveal the astonishing scale of factory farming in this country.1 The debate over factory farming is often “complicated and contentious,”2 with the deepest point of contention arising over the nature, degree, and duration of suffering food animals undergo. “In their numbers and in the duration and depth of the cruelty inflicted upon them,” writes Allan Kornberg, M.D., former Executive Director of Farm Sanctuary in a 2012 Farm Sanctuary brochure, “factory-farm animals are the most widely abused and most suffering of all creatures on our planet.” Raising the specter of animal suffering inevitably raises the question of animal consciousness and sentience. Jeremy Bentham, the 18th-century founder of utilitarianism, focused on sentience as the source of animals’ entitlement to equal consideration of interests. -

Responsible ownership and good care duty do affect the health and welfare of pet animals, one of the stakeholders of social life. In this study, pet owners' attitudes towards animal welfare were examined. The research was carried out in Ġzmir, Ankara and Afyonkarahisar that are located in the Central and Western parts of Turkey. Animal Welfare Attitude Scale (AWAS) was applied to pet owners who voluntarily participated in the study. According to the results obtained in the cognitive dimension of the AWAS, pet owners think that animal welfare is affected mostly by housing, feeding and health conditions, and less by slaughter, sacrifice or naming of animals. Findings regarding the behavioral dimension demonstrated that pet owners treat their pets and street animals well but they do not support non-governmental organizations (NGO) working for animal rights and animal protection and they are not willing to purchase and pay more for foods produced under animal friendly standartds. Also, it has been observed that pet owners believe animals are sensitive beings and have rights like humans, but they agree little with the judgment that animals are created for humans. -

THIS LEGISLATION IS APPROVED WITH A RECOMMENDATION I. SUMMARY OF PROPOSED LAW Assembly Bill No. 1421 would amend the Education Law to add a new paragraph 5 to subdivision c of section 809 to prohibit school districts, school principals, administrators, and teachers from requiring, permitting, or conducting a lesson or experimental study “using an animal in a hatching project in any such school or during any activity conducted under the auspices of such school whether or not the activity takes place on the premises of such school.” II. BACKGROUND A “hatching project” refers to an educational lesson in which fertilized chicken or duckling eggs are kept by students, usually in classroom incubators, to be hatched within one to four weeks.
