The barrage is designed to for 325,000 cusecs discharge and located about 20km (12 miles) from Haveli Lakh and about 150km (94miles) from Lahore (capital of Punjab Province). Three Irrigation Canals viz Pakpattan, Fordwah and Eastern Sadiqia Canals are fed from this barrage. The total canal command area of three canals is 2.5 million acres, which is 9.25% of the total irrigated area of Punjab (27 million acres) and has considerable contribution in the agricultural production of Punjab. Three canal command area spread over the six districts of Punjab i.e. Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Okara, Pakpattan, Vehari and Lodhran. Pakpattan Canal offtakes from River Sutlej at the right side of Sulemanki Barrage. The design discharge of canal is 6,594 cusecs at head. The total canal command area is about one million acres distributed in districts Okara, Pakpattan, Vehari and Lodhra on the right side of the River Sutlej. The main Pakpattan canal is perennial and only close for annual maintenance requirement during the months of December and January. Khadir Branch and PI Link Canal are non-perennial and closed during summer. BACKGROUND Pakistan Irrigation system originally developed during mid 19th and early 20th century and therefore the major chunk of the system is more than 80 years old. Upgrading and/or proper maintenance of the irrigation system has not been carried out since the system is constructed. Realizing the gravity of urgency of rehabilitation & upgrading of the system, Punjab Govt. initiated Punjab Irrigated Agriculture Investment Program (PIAIP) in 2009. Under this program the consultancy services was hired to study and/or supervise the construction activities involving five barrages and three canal system of Punjab Irrigation System on priority basis. Feasibility and detail design study of rehabilitation & upgrading of Pakpattan Canal Main line, Khadir Branch, Pakpattan-Islam Link Canal and Sulemanki Barrage are completed in 2013. The project named as “Pakpattan Canal & Sulemanki Barrage Improvement Project (PCBIP)” was awarded for construction in mid 2014. The project is divided into two construction contract: ICB-01 Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Pakpattan Canal, Khadir Branch and Pakpattan Islam Link Contract No. PCSBIP/ICB–01. ICB-02 Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Sulemanki Barrage Contract No. PCSBIP/ICB-02 1.1 Pakpattan Main Canal (Upper & Lower), Khadir Branch and PI-Link Canal Pakpattan Canal and distribution network cultivating about 1.25 million acres was commissioned in June 1926. The design discharge of Pakpattan Canal was 6,594 cusecs at head regulator built on the right flank of Suleimanki Barrage. Pakpattan Canal irrigates land in the districts of Okara, Pakpattan, Vehari, and Lohdran. Pakpattan canal has perennial as well as non perennial irrigation system and shut down for annual maintaining requirements during December/January. Khadir Branch and PI Link Canal is a non perennial part of the system. Pakpattan Main Canal 1 Pakpattan Canal and Sulemanki Barrage Bi-Annual Environmental Improvement Project (PCSBIP) Monitoring Report In pursuance of Indus Water Treaty (1960), India got the usage rights of the eastern tributaries of River Indus (Ravi, Sutlej and Beas). Consequently upon the construction of Bhakra/Nangal Dam on river Sutlej and Pandoh & Pong Dam on Beas, discharges in Sutlej were reduced significantly. Significant works for conveying water from western rivers through link canals to overcome the shortfall in the eastern rivers were devised and constructed. Balloki-Suleimanki Link canal (B.S Link) brings about 25,000 cusecs from Balloki barrage to feed the off taking canals of the Suleimanki Barrage. With construction of Sidhni Mailsi Bahawal Link (SMB Link) Canal Pakpattan main canal was split into two parts i.e. Pakpattan Canal Upper (PC(U)) from RD 0 to 567 and Pakpattan Canal Lower (PC(L)) from RD 568 to 667. Due to this intervention, PC(L) now draws its supplies from SMB Link. Khadir Branch Khadir branch off-taking from PC (upper) at RD 112+104/L draws a discharge of 2250 cs and irrigates an area of about 329,000 acres and is one of the large non-perennial canal systems. Khadir branch system has, over the years of use, sustained substantial damages to the hydraulic structures

  • Monitoring Urban Growth and Land Use Changes Using GIS and Remote Sensing: a Case Study of Tehsil Burewala
Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences Volume 53, No. 1, 2020 pp. 140-152 Monitoring urban growth and land use changes using GIS and remote sensing: A case study of Tehsil Burewala Sher Muhammad Malik1, Sana Arshad1, Khan Alam2 and Owais Bilal1 1Department of Geography, The Islamia University Bahawalpur 2Department of Physics, University of Peshawar *Corresponding author's email: [email protected] Submitted date:03/01/2019 Accepted date:23/03/2020 Published online:30/03/2020 Abstract Geospatial data is being extensively used to monitor the changes in an urban environment and assists as a decision-making tool for sustainable urban growth of the towns and cities. Intermediate and small cities of Pakistan are also getting urbanized day by day due to population growth and infrastructure development. The tehsil Burewala is one of the intermediate tehsil of Punjab province with Burewala city as Headquarter. Burewala city is included in medium sized cities of Pakistan presenting a kind of social and economic interaction. Urban growth of the city has extended beyond the municipal limits converting peri-urban vegetation into built up land. This study is aimed to focus on analyzing the urban growth of tehsil Burewala from 1981 to 2011 using Geo-spatial techniques. The land use changes and urban growth of the tehsil were analyzed using Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) data. The results of land cover classification revealed that built up area of the tehsil increased from 3.3% in 1981 to 4.7% in 2011. Likewise, vegetation cover of the tehsil is also increased from 66% in 1981 to 81% in 2011.
