Je me suis efforcé de définir les rôles de chacun des protagonistes et de reconnaître les mérites de tous ceux qui ont contribué à enrayé la mécanique d’un éventuel massacre de masse. Néanmoins, si vous trouvez des erreurs ou si vous disposez d’informations ou de sources qui me seraient inconnues, n’hésitez pas à me contacter pour que ce récit reste au plus près de la vérité historique. MG Michel Gautier 1 Le contexte historique Au cours d’une folle chevauchée qui allait libérer la Bretagne en une semaine, les chars de la 4ème division blindée du général Wood appartenant à la 3ème armée Patton se trouvaient le 3 août 1944 à Derval, c’est-à-dire à 50 kilomètres de Nantes et à 70 de Saint-Nazaire. C’est alors que le Generalmajor Huenten, le défenseur de Saint-Nazaire, se vit confirmer la directive d’Hitler et Jodl du 19 janvier 1944 consistant à « défendre les forteresses de l’Atlantique jusqu’au dernier homme » ! Cela signifiait concrètement qu’il allait devoir accueillir et aider le Generalleutnant Junck et une partie de sa 265.Infanterie-Division sur le repli devant l’avance américaine, à transformer la « forteresse » de Saint- Nazaire en poche de résistance allemande (Voir carte en ANNEXE 1). -
