Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolish- ness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. GOSPEL Jn 2:13-25 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, 2021 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated This weekend marks the start of the 2021 Archbishop’s Annual there. BLESSED ANGELA SALAWA’S STORY Angela served Christ and Christ’s little ones with all her strength. Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, , she was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather togeth- er and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her. Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918, her health did not per- mit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, “I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed.” In another place, she wrote, “Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can.” At her 1991 in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: “It is in this city that she worked, that she suf- fered and that her holiness came to maturity. While con- nected to the spirituality of Saint Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spir- it” (L’Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991).

ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the many blessings you daily bestow on us even in the midst of the trials and sufferings of a pandemic. Your goodness is without measure, and your providence exceeds all that we could ask or imagine. We ask you to look kindly upon this year’s Archbishop’s Annual Appeal,

“Reaching Out, Healing Together.”

Open our eyes to the spiritual and material needs of others. Open our hearts to respond generously. May the divine mercy that fills the Sacred Heart of Jesus move us to give of ourselves and what we have as generously as we have received from You. May those who suffer in any way as a result of the coronavirus be assisted and comforted by the ministry of the Church and the good works supported by the appeal, and may the efforts to eradicate this disease prove successful with your blessing. We make our prayer in the name of the healer of souls and bodies, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
