A MESSAGE FROM SR. MAXINE: Greetings to my fellow parishioners! I’ve been told that not everyone is aware of what we are up to in the RCIA office, so I want to call it to your attention because it involves all of you! Back in August, with the pandemic raging (as it continues to do now), we decided to suspend the regular RCIA program of initiating new members into the Catholic faith because the restrictions are not conducive to the sharing and community building that are essential to the program. Instead, we saw it as a perfect opportunity to focus on and build on and renew the community we already have together. We called it Renewing Catholicism for the Intentional Adult (RCIA for the parish Community). This is a review or a renewing of our Catholic faith for the entire parish. • So each week in the bulletin, this section is meant for your eyes and your enrichment. • You may have noticed (or not!) the poster in the vestibule which features a “Blessing Tree” that is sprouting many blessings for you! You are invited to randomly take a blessing when you pass and see what the Spirit has in store for you. God knows that during this very unusual and often difficult time, we need his blessing! Peace to all, Sr. Maxine

REVIEW & RENEW YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH Renewing Catholicism for Intentional Adults DON’T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE PARISH WEBSITE/FAITH/RCIA VIDEO SERIES RENEWING CATHOLICISM March: We are People of Integrity and Truth Moral Decision Making/ Christian Morality/ Formation of Conscience During this Lenten time, it is very appropriate that we address the area of morality and the formation of conscience. Throughout the ages, the Church has been blessed with many gifted and astute philosophers, theologians, scripture scholars, prophets and preachers who have guided and guarded its wisdom and teachings. They have clarified when needed and challenged when necessary. We have the Sacred Scriptures and the Church Teachings at our disposal in order to form our own conscience. Each of us is responsible and obligated to explore the best possible path forward, as we follow Christ. With all its richness and wisdom, the Church still spans this world and the next. As such, it remains a human institution, comprised of both saints and sinners, but destined and intended by Christ, for eternity with God. Having unity with God as our ultimate hope and goal, the Church teaches us that a conscience, informed and guided by the teachings of Christ and His Church, expresses its true greatness in freely choosing to do good (and avoid evil). And when this free choice is made by a heart that is in personal and intimate relationship with God, we transcend humanity’s brokenness, and experience a taste of that fulfillment to come! (Watch for Fr. Dave’s video presentation this month on the RCIA video series.) Blessing: May the God of all TRUTH bless you all your days, leading you to a life of integrity ad authenticity. May you be faithful to the search for truth wherever it is to be found: in the glory of creation, in the suffering of the poor around you, in your relationships, and within the very heart of you. May truth guide you in the Way as you live into God. May the God of TRUTH bless you.

QUESTIONS FROM THE BOX: (apologies for the late response!) a. Why do Catholics believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist? Is it in the bible? Why is it important? In giving us the Eucharist, Jesus said “Take and eat, for this is my body”. He did not say this is a symbol or representation. The mystery of real presence is just that… a mystery… just like love. We cannot prove either one but we rely on our experience of it…. and need to “milk the mystery”. (e.g.) What is your experience/evidence of love? What is your experience/evidence of real presence? Is God really present to you in prayer? Are you really present to God? Are you really present to those around you (e.g. your children)? … are they really present to you? It makes a difference. Eucharist challenges us to be and to look for “Real Presence” in on another. b. What is the Liturgy of the Hours? … as listed in the bulletin. The liturgy of the hours is an ancient monastic tradition in which monks and nuns marked the hours of the day with sacred psalms and readings to make them holy: Lauds is morning prayer, Vespers is evening prayer and Compline is night prayer. They also prayed Tierce, Sext and None which marked hours throughout the night. c. Why to Catholics pray to Mary? Why not just pray to God? Catholics do not pray to Mary. We ask for Mary’s intercession with God on our behalf…. just as we ask those we admire and have gone before us to intercede for us. Mary is a model of Christian life. In the Hail Mary we ask her… pray for us sinners …. The Rosary is an optional devotional we may choose as a help in asking

a. . THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 7, 2021

SEMINARIAN, JACOB STINNETT’S COLUMN Last week we continued to work our way through St. John Paul II’s Salvifici Doloris. We delved deeper into the mystery of human suffering, and that question that confronts all of us in times of suffering: “Why?” Job and his friends gave us one system that does not work, namely that all suffering is punishment for sin in a strict system of justice. There is some truth in this; justice does require that there be consequences to our actions, both good and bad. But this is not enough to encompass all the suffering experienced or witnessed in the world. God also allows suffering as a test. Our suffering is not a barrier between us and God, as we may have originally thought; rather, God is present to our suffering. He wants us to endure it and learn of God’s mercy and our own need for conversion. This is where love enters the picture. Last week left us with the reality of suffering and the reality of love sort of sitting next to each other, existing side-by-side. This week, St. John Paul II begins to bring them together. In Chapter IV of Salvifici Doloris, “Jesus Christ: Suffering Conquered by Love,” suffering and love come together, each drawing further meaning from the other. I want to jump to the last paragraph of this chapter, because it summarizes beautifully what we see in Jesus Christ on the Cross: “Human suffering has reached its culmination in the Passion of Christ. And at the same time it has entered into a completely new dimension and a new order: it has been linked to love” (SD 18). Jesus Christ is God, which means that whatever He does, He does perfectly. Even in the throes of His Passion, Jesus suffers perfectly. It sounds like a strange thing to say. How does one suffer perfectly? Commenting on the Sermon on the Mount, St. Thomas Aquinas says, “Perfection is always indicated by the fact that [a thing] returns to its own beginning, as appears in a circle [completing its loop]” (Super Ev. Matt., C. 5, L. 3, 445). Jesus’ suffering is perfect suffering because it is offered completely to the Father in love. Thus, human suffering has reached its culmination, its highest point, in Christ’s Passion, because it is perfectly offered to the Father in love. St. John Paul II ends the chapter with this insight, but he begins much earlier in Jesus’ public life. He uses one of the most famous scripture verses, John 3:16, from Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Even before we see the permanent link between suffering and love that is forged on the Cross, Jesus is preaching about it. Our familiarity with these words of Christ sometimes prevents us from appreciating their depth. The pope notes that this love of the Father is no ordinary love; rather it is salvific love. “Salvation means liberation from evil. […] God gives His Son to ‘the world’ to free man from evil, which bears within it the definitive and absolute perspective on suffering” (SD 14). The love of the Father for Jesus, and Jesus’ reciprocal love of the Father is linked to suffering, and it gives suffering a new meaning. To help shed light on this new meaning, I would like to introduce you to St. Anselm of Canterbury (c. 1033-1109). Anselm looked at the problem of suffering and sin, and he gave us an explanation as to why only the God-man could remedy our fallen situation. His Satisfaction Theory begins with the fact of Original Sin, in which the infinite Goodness of God has been offended. We are in need of making amends for this, but finite man cannot offer God something equally infinite as is needed to make up for offending His infinite majesty. Only God can offer something equal to His infinite majesty, but it is man, as the offending party who needs to offer it. Thus, God has to become man to make the perfect offering of infinite love that will restore our relationship with God. So Jesus, the God-man, is the One Who can give the answer to our suffering, because He is the One Who restores our relationship with the Father. John Paul II says, “Christ goes toward His own suffering aware of its saving power; He goes forward in obedience to the Father, but primarily He is united to the Father in this love with which He has loved the world and man in the world” (SD 16). John Paul II transports us from Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus to another nighttime conversation, but this one between Jesus and the Father. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus famously prays “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. […] My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, Your will be done” (Mt 26:39, 42). The pope comments on the words of this prayer: “They prove the truth of that love which the only-begotten Son gives to the Father in His obedience. At the same time, they attest to the truth of His suffering. The words of that prayer of Christ in Gethsemane prove the truth of love through the truth of suffering” (SD 18). The perfect love of Jesus that is needed to restore humanity’s relationship with the Father is proved through Jesus’ sufferings. Only an infinite love could endure such suffering and not lose sight of the Father. Jesus’ suffering is perfect suffering because it is consumed by His perfect love. This may give us pause when St. Paul says, “In my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His Body, that is, the Church” (Col 1:24). What could be lacking in the perfect suffering of Christ? Next week we will continue with Chapter V of Salvifici Doloris, “Sharers in the Suffering of Christ.” ST. PIUS X CHURCH REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO

Capital Campaign Update: Construction Starts Monday, March 8! A gigantic THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our Capital Campaign! Through your great generosity and continued prayers, you have helped our parish meet the ambitious goals set for Phase II of the Continuing to Renew All Things in Christ campaign. In spite of a global pandemic, and the many challenges and changes imposed by COVID-19, you have continued to love and support your parish, through it all, and I am so grateful for what you have been able to accomplish. Most of all, I am thankful to God that I get to be your pastor. It is a privilege to serve a community of faith that is truly invested in its future, as a parish family, committed to Christ and His Church, and sincere in sharing the gifts and the graces He has given to you. Thank you for being a parish that continues to inspire your pastor by the ways that you demonstrate your love for the Lord! With gratitude, affection, and prayers, – Fr. Dave Exciting Updates for our Capital Campaign: We have very good news to share with our Parish. We start construction this coming Monday, March 8. Father Andrew H. Hohman Knights of Columbus Council #5253 has completed their second pledge gift of $110,000.00 for a total pledge gift of $200,250.00 to St. Pius X Church and School. With the Knights’ second gift, and an additional $30,000 matching funds gift by another generous parishioner, which raised an additional $60,000.00 in pledges, we are moving forward! We currently have raised over $4,5553,912 dollars in pledges and received $3,715,06.002 in cash. This leaves us $4,444.00 left of pledges to raise. We have had a few parishioners who have not been able to complete their pledges due to financial hardship so this pledge balance may fluctuate some in the future. If you can make a new pledge or an additional pledge increase, please remember to call 614-866-2859 or email John Beyer [email protected] to let me know so I can add these to our numbers. If you do so through Faith Direct, please let me know this also. The entire Phase II project is focused on building-up our parish: as a community of friendship with Christ, and as a communion of faith in Christ, with every person valued, and every family involved. We are extremely proud and thankful for all of you that have made a pledge and continue to honor this commitment to St. Pius X Church and School by continuing to pay on your pledge until it is completed. From all the Staff here at St. Pius X, Father Dave, and I, thank-you and God Bless! John Beyer, Campaign Chair ST. PIUS X CHURCH REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO

The Diocese of Columbus announces Real Presence, Real Future, a strategic initiative aimed at expanding the presence of Christ throughout the Diocese over the next two years and preserving the Faith for future generations. Watch the message from Bishop Brennan:

https://realpresencerealfuture.org/

This initiative aims to re-imagine how the Church serves her people through a process or listening to the needs of the people, hearing their ideas, concerns, and desires. This planning and consultation phase will be held throughout 2021 and the findings will be implemented over the next few years. The full scope of the Real Presence, Real Future initiative will prepare the Diocese to increase its Catholic presence over the next 10 to 20 years and is intended to meet the many needs of the Diocese of Columbus’ diverse areas and ethnicities, emphasizing the utilization of active diocesan priests and deacons, mission-oriented parishes and schools, and all other available resources.

Real Presence, Real Future Priorities: • Engaging all Catholics to reflect upon the real presence of the Lord in their lives and how they can share that presence with others. • Articulating a plan for a comprehensive Catholic presence for each county/deanery by integrating missionary outreach, parish and school footprints, and leadership requirements for the next five years. • Defining and developing the necessary Diocesan resources structures to support priests, deacons, and lay leaders in parishes and schools.

Real Presence, Real Future will be driven by six evangelization subcommittees: • Forming parish missionary disciples • Increasing the Catholic presence and outreach to university campuses • Using digital and social communications for evangelization • Deploying lay missionaries in parishes and schools • Forming Catholic school faculty and staff in missionary discipleship • Creating a soft-entry center focused on outreach to the religiously non-affiliated

We Want Your Feedback! Throughout Lent, parishioners at every parish are being given the opportunity to participate in diocesan- wide survey called the Disciple Maker Index that looks at all aspects of parish life. This 75-question survey is available in hard copy at all parishes and digitally on all parish websites as a survey link between now and March 22. Don’t miss your chance to participate!

Stay informed about Real Presence, Real Future • Log on to the Real Presence, Real Future website www.realpresencerealfuture.org as the primary source for information about this initiative and will be routinely updated to provide the latest information and opportunities for feedback and consultation. • Attend parish-level consultations in the fall to hear first-hand how this will impact your parish and grow the presence of the Church throughout the Diocese of Columbus. • Read information in The Catholic Times, as well as other news sources such as St. Gabriel Radio AM 820/FM 88.3. SAINT OF THE DAY FOR MARCH 12

Blessed Angela Salawa (September 9, 1881-March 12, 1922) Blessed Angela Salawa’s Story Angela served Christ and Christ’s little ones with all her strength. Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, , she was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather together and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her. Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918, her health did not permit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, “I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed.” In another place, she wrote, “Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can.” At her 1991 in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: “It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of Saint Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit” (L’Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991). Humility should never be mistaken for lack of conviction, insight or energy. Angela brought the Good News and material assistance to some of Christ’s “least ones.” Her self-sacrifice inspired others to do the same.
