It was heartbreaking but Devils goalie Martin Brodeur held his ground. The Caps came out and Like Sports? scored two early goals and it looked like they were going to win. OCTOBER 23, 2009 Good And Bad News For The US National Team ! by Eric Meade and Michael Foose, 5G ! Hello soccer fans! ! Have you been watching the World Cup qualifiers lately? Well, the good news for the US team is that they clinched a spot in the World Cup. Even so, they played Costa Rica on October 14th. They tied two-two with the US scoring only in the second half. Costa Rica"s Ruiz scored two goals in rapid succession. Michael Bradley and Jonathan Bornstein both scored goals to tie up the game. Despite several great chances, the US failed to score until the 72nd minute. Some failed Ravens and Giants await the coin toss. attempts were made by Conor Casey who completely bluffed one easy shot which he could NFL Overtime--the have tapped around the goalie. Instead, he shot it straight into him. Worst Rule Ever ! As we said, there was also some bad news. OCTOBER 23, 2009 Football Forecast: Vikings vs. Steelers Will Be Great Game by Coleman Ayers, 5G This week there will be an even better game than I predicted last time; it is the Minnesota Vikings at the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers. ! I predict that this will be a good game but the Vikes will pull it out, 24-17. Some advantages that the Vikings have are: A, the electrifying running ability of Adrian Peterson. B, a great defense who, in my opinion. is the best in the whole NFL, and C, some pretty good WRS. Also, they now know that Brett Favre is for real. Some things the Steelers have going for them to make it close are the home field advantage, a good QB, and a solid defense/special teams. ! The Vikings are 6-0 facing a pretty mild schedule. The Steelers have faced a schedule of about the same difficulty and are now 3-2 and have had injuries that will benefit the Vikings. ! The game will be at Heinz Field, home of the Steelers, at 1:00 ET. this Sunday, Oct. 25. An Ugly Loss for Maryland by Matt Fenty, 4FJ ! On a rainy Saturday, Oct. 17, the Maryland Terrapins played the Virginia Cavaliers in a game that some sportswriters have called just plain ugly. Certainly, the weather was ugly; a steady rain fell all day, but the performance of both teams was sloppy, too. The final score was 20-9. ! It turned out that the rain was more steady than the play of either team. During the game, Maryland had four fumbles, and their quarterback, Chris Turner, threw two interceptions. ! Still, they didn"t have so much trouble moving the ball has they had holding on to it. Maryland"s record is now 2-5 and the Cavs stand at 3-3. Even though both teams continue to be rivals, Maryland is slipping--even when it"s not muddy. The Terps and Cavs slugged it out in the rain last Saturday, and the Cavs won 20-9. SPORTS X"TREME ! PAGE3 VOLUME 2, NO. 2! OCTOBER 23, 2009 Meet Lafayetteʼs Youngest Football Team ! Introducing the Tiny-Mite Panthers Photos and text by Matthew Harris and Elijah Singletary, 4S They are 7-0. Amazing! Especially when you consider that this football team--the Tiny- Mite Panthers--is for kids in Kindergarten and grades one and two! They beat FBR 28-7. Ethan Barnes ran a touchdown against Benning-Stoddart. Their last game is on Saturday. Wish them luck! Trevor Thiesfeld- Ethan Gadson, 2S Jones, 2B Michael Senko, 2N Xavier Gary, 2H Michael Rosebar, KD Armani Johnson, KS Mitey-Mite Panthers Report by Alex Fitzgerald, 4FM As we went to press, the Lafayette Panthers Mitey-Mite team had a record of 1-4, so the Mitey-Mite can definitely feel for the Redskins who are also having a losing season. The Mitey-Mite"s one win was by forfeit because the other team didn"t have enough players. They lost to the FBR, to the Beavers and twice to the Wolf Pack. ! The team has two QBs who go to Lafayette: Alex Fitzgerald (#7) and Elijah Singletary (#1). In all, there are 21 players on the team. The season ends the day before Halloween. In the whole season, we have not scored a single point. The only team worse than us is the Hornets. Although we haven"t played them yet, they"ve never won a game, and if we ever do get to play them, I think we can win. SPORTS X"TREME ! PAGE4 VOLUME 2, NO. 2! • The Impact of Designated Players in Major League Soccer
Superstar Salaries and Soccer Success: The Impact of Designated Players in Major League Soccer Dennis Coates Department of Economics University of Maryland, Baltimore County Bernd Frick Department of Management University of Paderborn Todd Jewell Department of Economics University of North Texas December 2012 Abstract This study estimates the relationship between production and salary structure in Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest level of professional soccer (association football) in North America. Soccer production, measured as league-points-per- game, is modeled as a function of a team’s total wage bill, the distribution of the team’s wage bill, and goals per game. Both the gini coefficient and the coefficient of variation are utilized to measure salary inequality. The results indicate that production in MLS is negatively responsive to increases in the salary inequality; this effect is consistently significant when using the coefficient of variation to measure dispersion. 1 I. Introduction Economic theory indicates that the distribution of salaries can affect the productivity of workers and firms. In the theory of tournaments, Lazear and Rosen (1981) discuss the possibility that greater salary inequality can lead to more worker effort and increased productivity. However, cohesion theory (Levine, 1991) implies firms may be able to increase the productivity of workers by equalizing salaries, since a more equal salary distribution will increase unity within the firm. The implication is that firms with more equal salary distributions will be more productive than similar firms with less equal salary structures. The present study attempts to shed light on the question of the connection between salary structure and productivity using professional sports data.

All Print Page Rights Reserved. 05/30/2008 11:54AM Chivas getting surprise contributions Wounded Red-and-White getting lift from unlikely sources Chivas USA Media Relations CARSON, Calif. -- The way Chivas USA figured it, some of the key players in the 2008 Major League Soccer campaign would have included a former World Cup and European Championship veteran, an MLS Cup Most Valuable Player and Mexico's all-time caps leader. Instead, two players who made the leap from amateur to professional in mere months as well as a collegiate forward turned defender are among those who have helped the club out in the early going. Injuries have depleted Chivas USA since the preseason but young players have filled in. The club's sudden and forced youth movement has finally started paying off as the club has two consecutive wins entering Saturday's home game against the Columbus Crew. "They're doing a great job. They've been huge, and that's what it's all about. It's about being able to go 20-something deep. In times like this, this is when it pays off," Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan said. "We expect nothing but a solid effort from them because at this point of the year we need them to step up." Sueno MLS 2007 winner Jorge Flores is among the young players who have helped turn the results around. Flores scored an insurance goal against D.C.
