We thought folks might be interested to know the history of the club's domain name, why we have a domain name, and some information on domain names in general. Thanks to Reinhardt (our webmaster) for putting together this article! A domain name is essentially a string of letters that tells someone where to go to find a given website. It is not an actual address in the same way 251 Dundas Street, London, Ontario is, but it is a unique identifier that can be looked up by your computer to determine the actual address. Just as we typically say "the Library" to refer to the London Public Library, Central Branch, http://sflondon.ca is a short, human-friendly way to refer to the Science Fiction London website. -

A CHECKLIST OF FANTASY MAGAZINES 1945 Edition Bulletin Number One 20 c to Subscribers PREFACE As the first of a long line of Foundation publications we are happy to present a relatively complete checklist of all fantasy periodicals. Insofar as the major Eng lish-language titles are concerned, we believe this list to be both complete and error-free, but it was not poss ible to furnish an adequate listing of.several of the more obscure items. It is also very likely that there exist several foreign language publications whose names are not even known to us. Anyone able to furnish addi tional information is requested to send it to Forrest J. Ackerman, 236^ N. New Hampshire, Los Angeles 4, Cal., for inclusion in the next edition of this checklist. BACKGROUND OF A STORY By Sam Moskowitz One of the most common misconceptions of science fiction readers, a heavy proportion of whom are back-seat editors, is that putting out a science fiction magazine (or almost any other magazine, for that matter) is a simple matter of selecting the appropriate stories by Robert A. Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, A. E. van Vogt, or Philip Jose Farmer, which arrive in every morning's mail, in a variety of lengths to make balancing an issue easy and al ready marked up for the printer. It never was that way, and it never will be that way. With a few exceptions, the editor who gets good stories must go out and work for each one of them, frequently supplying the plot, nurs ing the writer through mental blocks, breaking company rules on payment, and making sure that when all the work is completed the author doesn't have a lapse of memory and ship it off to a competitor by mistake. When I was editing Science-Fiction Plus, possibly the best story we published was "Death of a Sensitive," by Harry Bates, which led off our May 1953 number and was later anthologized in a somewhat revised form in Editor's Choice in Science Fiction (The McBride Co., 1954). Peter Schuyler Miller (born February 21, 1912 in Troy , New York ; died October 13, 1974 on Blennerhassett Island , West Virginia ) was an American science fiction writer and critic. contents. Miller's parents were the chemist Philip Schuyler Miller and the teacher Edith May, née Figgis. He grew up in the Mohawk Valley in New York State, which established his lifelong interest in the Iroquois culture and archaeological legacy . In later years he was a dedicated amateur archaeologist, contributing to the anthropological division of the Carnegie Museum , the Eastern States Archeological Society , the Van Epps- Hartley Chapter of the New York Archeological Association , the Society for American Archeology, and the Society for Pennsylvania Archeology , for their journal Pennsylvania Archaeologist he was interim editor. When Miller died in 1974, aged only 62, he was on a field trip to a Fort Ancient culture archaeological site west of Parkersburg , West Virginia. Miller was a good student, gave the graduation speech of his year at the age of 15 and then studied chemistry at Union College in Schenectady , where he graduated with a Masters in 1932 . He then worked as a laboratory assistant at the General Electric Research Institute in Schenectady until 1934 . From 1937 to 1952 he worked in adult education and public relations at the Schenectady Museum and eventually became its director. From 1952 to 1974 he was a technical writer for the Fisher Scientific Company in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . From his youth, Miller was an avid reader of science fiction, starting with the stories of Jules Verne . -

Speculative fiction that depicts near-apocalypses do not however, prefer unconceivable futures but favour the current time of the narrative, depicting them as events happening now. Operating within the apocalyptic chronotope, science fiction bonds present day concerns with possible catastrophes. One such narrative is Harry Bates’ short story “Farewell to the Master” (1940) which also generated two film adaptations entitled The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, 2008). While Bates’ short story relates how humanity is prone to act imprudently during a relatively peaceful period, the 1951 film turns to that of the Cold War and its repercussions, and the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still centres around the theme of nature. As environmental concerns dominate our era the 2008 film reflects humanity’s ever- growing consumption and destruction of its natural surroundings. As the source text and its adaptations provide possible apocalyptic visions or scenarios adjusted to their respective audiences, this essay analyses these narratives through the apocalyptic chronotope, exploring and building on Bakhtin’s theory. In doing so, this essay attempts to discern the ways in which adapted near apocalyptic scenarios shift and change to accommodate contemporary concerns within a temporal and spatial framework. -

3/ No. 102 The Museum of Modern Art FOR RELEASE: July 25, 1969 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart SCIENCE FICTION FILM SHOW STARTING WITH "DESTINATION MDON" FIRST EXCLUSIVE CELEBRATION OF THIS GENRE IN FOUR WEEK MUSEUM RETROSPECTIVE A Science Fiction Film Show, opening with George Pal's production "Destination Moon," will be presented by the Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art, from July 28 through Septem ber 25. The show, 56 feature films and five shorts, includes two films which have not yet had American premieres — "Omicron" by Ugo Gregoretti from Italy, about a worker whose body is in habited by a Martian, and "Stereo," made independently by a 26-year-old Canadian , David Cronenberg about drug experiments conducted by a mythical Institute for Erotic Inquiry. The Museum's first compilation of science fiction films dates back to Georges MlliSs' "Trip to the Moon" made in I902 and expects to conclude with "2001,ASpace Odyssey." The program also has such favorites as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr, Hyde," the 1^2 version with Fredric March, directed by Rouben Mamoulian and considered one of the best of many adaptations of the Robert Louis Stevenson story. Another fantasy film of the thirties is "The Invisible Man," directed by James I^ale from the novel by H.G. Wells. The special trick effects in this film would have dazzled pioneer trickster Georges MSlifes, it has been said. M6lifes, however was the first to venture into science fiction, and his picture is regarded as "a heady mixture of surrealism, humor and pantomine." In a similar satiric vein is Ren^ Clair's picture, "Paris Qui Dort," an early existentialist experiment* The Department of Film has spent several months preparing this series in the light of such current events as explorations of the moon, the expected pictorial close-ups of Mars' surface , and the biological advances in transplanting human organs. -

“THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL” (1951)— A FIFTY-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE By Dr. John L. Flynn Introduction One of the first Hollywood films produced during the science fiction boom of the 1950's, “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951) told the thoughtful and provocative story of the arrival in Washington, D.C. of a strange visitor from space who brought a message of goodwill and peaceful coexistence and a giant robot to enforce that message of peace. At a time when the world was poised on the brink of nuclear annihilation and one man’s crusade to end the Communist infiltration of American culture spread fear, panic and paranoia, the motion picture was a major departure from the cold war dramas of its day. Directed by Robert Wise, who would later helm “The Andromeda Strain” (1970) and “Star Trek—The Motion Picture” (1979), “The Day the Earth Stood Still” not only addressed the anxieties of atomic war and the maelstrom of events surrounding the “Red Scare” but also showed that science fiction was a medium of high-minded ideas and ideals. The Twentieth Century-Fox production became one of the most successful films of its day, and is still highly regarded by fans as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. Origins Although the 1950’s produced the greatest number of science fiction films of any other decade (to date), the genre of science fiction was far from a proven box office favorite when the decade first began. In fact, there had been only a handful of successful science fiction films made in the first fifty years of the Twentieth Century, and most of those had been made overseas in Europe. -
