Tolle aja kohta hiiglaslik (137 m pikkune) transpordilaev oli nime saanud vanakreeka poetessi järgi. Mis nime see laev kandis? 7. 9. oktoobril 1934 toimus Marseille’is atentaat, kus Bulgaaria revolutsionäär Vlado Chernozemski tappis Jugoslaavia kuninga Aleksander I ning sai sellele järgnenud tulevahetuses ka ise surma. Pikka aega peeti teist atentaadi ohvrit, tollast Prantsusmaa välisministrit ka Chernozemski ohvriks, kuid 1970-tel tehtud uuringute käigus tuvastati, et teda tabas hoopis ühe vastutule avanud kohaliku politseiniku kuul. Küsimegi, kes oli teine poliitikust ohver (1862- 1934; pildil)? 8. Küsitav poliitiline mõiste tuleneb iirikeelsest sõnast, mis eesti keeles tähendab lindpriid. Algselt oli see sõimusõnaks nende kohta, kes toetasid James II trooniletõusmise pooldajaid, hiljem aga nende kohta, kes uskusid kuningate jumalikku õigusse ja toetasid riiklikku kontrolli religiooni üle. Ameerika revolutsiooni ajal kutsuti nii Suurbritannia kuninga toetajaid. Mis mõiste? 9. Tänapäeval tuntakse küsitavat nime all Mrs Charles Alden Black. Ta oli üks esimesi naisi USA-s, kes julges avalikult rääkida oma rinnavähist, suursaadik on ta olnud Ghanas ja Tšehhoslovakkias, samuti on ta olnud USA esindaja ÜRO-s. Proua on üsnagi kuulus, aga millise nime all on ta üldtuntud? 10. Eesti Vabariigi esimene naisminister oli Vabariigi Valitsuse eksiilis portfellita minister maist 1971 kuni juunini 1990, eluaastatega 1906 – 1993. Kes? Sel pildil istub ta Eesti Komitee Nais- sektsiooni juhatuses esireas vasakult teisena. 11. Olla oma riigi rahandusminister on vaieldamatult prestiižne. Vähe sellest, et riigi rahahoovad on tema käes, kaasneb selle ametiga ka üks tiitel, mis koosneb kahest sõnast. Esimene neist on Maailmapanga, kirjutage teine sõna! 12. Nimi Papp seostub koheselt kuulsa Ungari poksija Laszlo`ga. Siiski on ka meil oma Papp – Peeter Paul, kes võiks olla peaaegu niisama kuulus kui too ungarlane. Nimelt mõtles Peeter Paul Papp 1960-ndate alguses välja ühe unikaalse toiduaine-alase toote. Seda toodet toodetakse muide tänaseni. Mis toode? 13. Näete ühe tulevikulinna maketti. Selle „toidu“ ladinakeelne nimetus on Danaus plexippus, aga meile piisab ka üldisemast vastusest. Keda ta siis nende elutute kivide vahelt otsib? 18. Lätlased on Eestile pühendanud mitmeid selle lille sorte, näiteks Rahvarinne, Tallinn, Suur Munamägi. Eestis aretatud sortidest on maailmakuulsaim Edna, tuntud on ka Sinilind, Tiina, Sakala ja Kuldne Trio. Lisada võiks veel Rasputini, Rigoletto ja Ulõbka Gagarina. Millise lillega on tegemist? 19. 1989.a ilmunud ENE 4.köites leidub artikkel taimest nimega kirbik. Selle liikide arvuks pakutakse 5 kuni 50 ning majanduslikult tähtsaimana nimetatakse harilikku kirbikut (Capsicum annuum). Millise nime all tunneme meie seda taime nüüd? 20. See Istiophorus platypterus võib kasvada kuni 3 m pikkuseks ja 100 kg raskuseks. Tema anatoomilised ja morfoloogilised iseärasused lubavad tal olla kõige kiireim veeloom, tema kiiruseks on fikseeritud isegi 110 km/tunnis. Ta on sattunud ka ühe riigi vapile (seal on neid koguni kaks isendit). Kuidas kõlab selle kala eestikeelne nimi ja mis riigi vapil ta on? 21. Selle küla maile langes 8. augustil 1863 kaheksa meteoriiti, millest 4 õnnestus ka leida. Aukamäe meteoriit kaaluga 10,3 kg on suurim Eestist leitud objekt Eesti meteoriidikogus. Kurla meteoriit (3,95 kg) varastati kogust 1995. aastal. Küla keskel asub üks võimsamaid Eesti kihelkonnakirikuid, XIII sajandi algul asus küla Nurmekunna muinaskihelkonna aladel. Mis küla? 22. Küsime jõge Läti põhjaosas. See algab Valka lähistelt, suubub Burtnieki (Asti) järve. Pikkus 62 km, jõgikond 575 km2. Jõgikonna lõunaosas asuv samanimeline soo (75 km2) on Läti suurimaid turbarabasid. Jõe rööpnimesid on Emere ja Ymera. Mis jõgi? Sama nime kannab ka 1952 asutatud ja 1991 linnaõigused saanud Läti turbatööstuse keskus. 23. Nimetage Austrias, Kitzbüheli maakonnas asuv ca 1100 elanikuga küla, mis on hästi tuntud laskesuusa- keskusena: muuhulgas peeti seal 1978, 1998 ja 2005 laskesuusatamise MM, samuti iga-aastaselt on seal toimumas laskesuusatamise MK-etapid. 24. Milline USA osariik? (vt ka lippu, mis on põhitoonilt tumesinine). Osariik liitus USA-ga 36.-ndna 1864. aastal, pindala on 286 367 km² ja elanikke ca 2,6 miljonit. Peamine tööstusharu on mäetööstus, millest on tuletatud ka osariigi hüüdnimed Silver State ja Mining State. Pealinnaks on Carson City, aga palju tuntum on üks teine linn (ca 1,8 miljonit elanikku), mis on teada ühe mäetööstusest 90 kraadi erineva tegevusala poolest. Lisaks peetakse osariigis sageli profipoksi tiitlimatše. 25. Roald Amundseni kolmest ekspeditsioonilaevast kaks: Gjøa ning Fram on säilitatud Oslos asuvas Frami muuseumis. Kolmanda ekspeditsioonilaeva saatus ei osutunud nii õnnelikuks: see 1916 Oslo lähedal Askeris ehitatud 36,5 m pikk ning 12,3 m lai kolmemastiline kuunar, mida Amundsen kasutas oma Kirdeväila ekspeditsioonil (1918-1924) müüdi 1925 Seattle’is peetud oksjonil Hudsoni lahe kompaniile, aasta hiljem jäi laev Põhja-Kanadas Cambridge Bay’s jäävangi ning uppus 1930. Laeva kerejäänused on siiani nähtaval Cambridge Bay lahes. Mis nime kandis see laev? 26. See pasjanss on ammutuntud nime Klondike all, arvutipõhiseks muutsid selle Wes Cherry 1989 (Windowsile) ning Michael Casteel mõned aastad varem MacIntoshile. Mäng koosneb 52 mängukaardist ning on võidetud siis, kui kõik kaardid on mastidekaupa jagatud. Peaks olema tuttav pea kõigile, kes vähegi Windowsi mänge näppinud. Sama nime kannab ka Jane Seymouri kehastatud Bondi tüdruk filmist Live And Let Die. Mis kaardimäng? 27. Eesti esimene olümpiaraamat oli 1936.aastal Tartus Noor-Eesti kirjastuses ilmunud „Berliini olümpiamängud 1936“. Kes oli selle autoriks? 28. Küsitav termin sai omale nime prantsuse keelest ning tähendas algselt „kingadega koputada“. Viimane tegevus seostub eelkõige Nikita Hruštšoviga, kui too ÜRO kõnepuldis kinga vastu pulti taguma hakkas. Aga millise termini või tegevusega siiski tegemist on? 29. Mõiste „poola torumees“ tekkis enne Prantsusmaa referendumit, hirmutamaks Lääne-Euroopat Idast sissevoolava odava tööjõu eest, mis võtab riikide kodanikelt ära töökohad. Prantsuskeelses Vikipeedias tekkis „poola torumehe“ kõrvale ka „eesti …“. Milline elukutse on eestlastele omistatud? Pildil näete valikut selle elukutse esindajaist 1957. aastal. 30. 2007.a pommirünnaku läbi meie hulgast lahkunud Pakistani peaminister Benazir Bhutto on ühes intervjuus öelnud, et tema eeskujuks on olnud Muhamedi tütar. Sest nagu küsitav, pidi ka Bhutto isa tööd jätkama, sest tal polnud vendi. Tõsi, Benaziril oli küll kaks venda, kuid nad tapeti. Kuidas kõlab aga selle Muhamedi tütre nimi? 31. Daniel Kahneman on sündinud 1934.a Tel Avivis Leedust pärit perekonnas.     ABSTRACT Fantasies and Delusions: Billy Joel’s Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, M.M. Mentor: Jean A. Boyd, Ph.D. In 2001, the release of Fantasies and Delusions officially announced Billy Joel’s remarkable career transition from popular songwriting to classical instrumental music composition. Representing Joel’s eclectic aesthetic that transcends genre, this album features a series of ten solo piano pieces that evoke a variety of musical styles, especially those coming from the Romantic tradition. A collaborative effort with classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo, Joel has mentioned that Fantasies and Delusions is the album closest to his heart and spirit. However, compared to Joel’s popular works, it has barely received any scholarly attention. Given this gap in musicological work on the album, this thesis focuses on the album’s content, creative process, and connection with Billy Joel’s life, career, and artistic identity. Through this thesis, I argue that Fantasies and Delusions is reflective of Joel’s artistic identity as an eclectic composer, a melodist, a Romantic, and a Piano Man. Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.
