  • Garneau, Marc (March 30Th Freighter Collision
The Honourable Marc Garneau Minister of Transport House of Commons Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 November 3, 2020 Re: March 30th collision between two freighters on the South Coast of British Columbia, Interim Protocol for the Use of Southern BC Anchorages Dear Minister, I am writing to you regarding an incident in March of which you are already aware. On March 30th, a 200 m freighter pulled anchor and collided with another freighter in Plumper Sound, Between Saturna and South Pender Islands. The collision caused one freighter to puncture the hull of the other. This could have resulted in an oil spill in the Southern Gulf Islands, a fragile ecosystem home to the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW). I have written to you personally and formally many times about the Interim Protocol for the use of Southern BC Anchorages. I cannot say that these giant freighters have overstayed their welcome in the Salish Sea, for they were never welcome there. The vessels themselves pollute the environment and destroy the sea bed. They also disturb residents of the Southern Gulf Islands with light and noise pollution. Local First Nations were not consulted on the locations of the anchorage site, even though the freighters occupy their traditional territory. Transport Canada created the Interim Protocol for the use of Southern BC Anchorages with totally inadequate parameters. I find it difficult to believe that anyone at TC expected incoming freighter crews to adhere to voluntary measures to reduce light and noise pollution. By the time my constituents’ complaints are registered and relayed to the right person, the vessel in question has moved on and another replaces it, it’s crew equally uninvested in the well-being of the area in which it temporarily finds itself, and the process starts again from the beginning.

  • Vaccine Rollout in Canada
January 12, 2021 Hon. Patty Hajdu Hon. Marc Miller Minister of Health Minister of Indigenous Services House of Commons House of Commons Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Ministers Hajdu and Miller, We are writing to you on behalf of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) and our membership of paediatric health experts across the country to urge you to accelerate the administration of COVID-19 vaccines across Canada. Along with our colleagues in family medicine, geriatrics, nursing, and countless other health professionals, we celebrated when Health Canada announced safe and effective vaccines were approved for use in Canada. But the rollout of the largest vaccination campaign in history has started off far too slow. Indigenous communities where COVID-19 infection can have disproportionate impact need vaccines now. Our frontline healthcare workers, who have been risking their lives to care for Canadians since the start of this pandemic, and Canada’s most vulnerable, especially our elders and those living in long-term care homes, cannot afford to continue waiting. There is another group of Canadians whose lives depend on widespread vaccine coverage—children and youth. Since the start of the pandemic, children and youth have been disproportionately affected by the public health measures designed to keep Canadians safe from COVID-19. We are especially concerned about the effects these restrictions have had on their mental health. It may be years before we fully understand the extent and magnitude of these effects, but here is what we know right now: Paediatricians, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and other health professionals are seeing more youth with mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and problematic substance use.

  • BC Treaty Commission Congratulates Federal Ministers on Recent Cabinet Appointments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 27, 2019 BC Treaty Commission congratulates federal ministers on recent cabinet appointments VANCOUVER – The BC Treaty Commission congratulates the Honourable Carolyn Bennett on her re- appointment as Canada’s Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and the Honourable Bill Morneau for his re-appointment as Minister of Finance. Several important initiatives were supported by Ministers Bennett and Morneau in the previous government, in partnership with First Nations, the First Nations Summit, and the Government of British Columbia. Last week the Treaty Commission released its annual report, which focuses on the significant milestones and progress in treaty negotiations that have contributed to a new era of Indigenous rights recognition in BC. “Since October 2018, seven negotiating tables, representing 21 Indian Act bands, advanced to Stage 5 treaty negotiations, and we have not had this much progress since 2015,” says Chief Commissioner Celeste Haldane. “Advancing self-determination and self-government through treaty negotiations requires the participation of all political parties working together to advance the recognition of Indigenous lands and rights.” “We look forward to assisting the Principals in implementing the new tools at individual negotiations to continue the positive progress we have seen over the past year,” says Chief Commissioner Celeste Haldane. The Treaty Commission welcomes and congratulates all new cabinet appointments, including Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Transport Marc Garneau, and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Jonathan Wilkinson. The recognition of Indigenous rights and reconciliation requires a whole of government approach, and the Treaty Commission looks forward to working with all Ministers to ensure successful negotiations in British Columbia.
