4.5 Cultural and Paleontological Resources 4.5 CULTURAL AND PALEONTOLOGICAL RESOURCES This section evaluates the cultural and paleontological resources impacts of the proposed Plan. The information presented was compiled from multiple sources as noted throughout the section. 4.5.1 EXISTING CONDITIONS 4.5.1.1 CULTURAL SETTING Prehistoric Setting The discussion below briefly summarizes the major cultural developments in the region before the arrival of Spanish colonists in 1769. It draws mainly from several decades of archaeological research, which generally recognizes three major periods (Paleoindian, or Paleoamerican; Archaic; and Late Prehistoric), each marked by certain changes in the archaeological record. These archaeological changes appear to reflect a variety of shifts in technology, settlement, and land use. Of the 109 federally recognized Indian tribes in California, 18 are located in San Diego County. The tribal members of today's bands represent four Indian cultural/linguistic groups who have populated this entire region for more than 10,000 years, taking advantage of its abundant natural resources and diverse ecological system for their livelihoods. As described in proposed Plan Appendix G, the four nations are: the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Cupeno, and Kumeyaay. Paleoamerican Period (12,000 to 7,000 Years Before Present [B.P.]) Despite decades of research, the early prehistory of coastal southern California remains poorly understood. The archaeological record does reveal that humans had appeared by about 13,000 years ago on the Channel Islands, where they lived primarily by fishing and shellfishing. These early island components are of interest in that they seem to reflect fully developed maritime economies that were distinct from, but roughly contemporaneous with, the Clovis tradition represented throughout much of interior North America. -

Geodiversitas 35 (4): 815-940. http://dx.doi.org/g2013n4a5 ABSTRACT e newly discovered Upper Miocene to Upper Pliocene San Gregorio assem- blage of the Purisima Formation in Central California has yielded a diverse collection of 34 marine vertebrate taxa, including eight sharks, two bony fish, three marine birds (described in a previous study), and 21 marine mammals. Pinnipeds include the walrus Dusignathus sp., cf. D. seftoni, the fur seal Cal- lorhinus sp., cf. C. gilmorei, and indeterminate otariid bones. Baleen whales include dwarf mysticetes (Herpetocetus bramblei Whitmore & Barnes, 2008, Herpetocetus sp.), two right whales (cf. Eubalaena sp. 1, cf. Eubalaena sp. 2), at least three balaenopterids (“Balaenoptera” cortesi “var.” portisi Sacco, 1890, cf. Balaenoptera, Balaenopteridae gen. et sp. indet.) and a new species of rorqual (Balaenoptera bertae n. sp.) that exhibits a number of derived features that place it within the genus Balaenoptera. is new species of Balaenoptera is relatively small (estimated 61 cm bizygomatic width) and exhibits a comparatively nar- row vertex, an obliquely (but precipitously) sloping frontal adjacent to vertex, anteriorly directed and short zygomatic processes, and squamosal creases. -

Cold seeps fluids provide an additional source of energy for various sulfide- and 27 hydrocarbon-harvesting bacteria, often in symbiosis with invertebrates, attracting a variety of other 28 organisms including crustaceans (e.g., Levin 2005; Vanreusel et al. 2009; Vrijenhoek 2013). The 29 percentage of crustaceans of all macrofaunal specimens is highly variable locally in modern seeps, from 30 0–>50% (Dando et al. 1991; Levin et al. -

Degree awarded December 2013 ii © 2013 James Carlton McNabb iii THESIS ABSTRACT James Carlton McNabb Master of Science Department of Geological Sciences December 2013 Title: Stratigraphic Record of Pliocene-Pleistocene Basin Evolution and Deformation Along the San Andreas Fault, Mecca Hills, California Sedimentary rocks in the Mecca Hills record a 3-4 Myr history of basin evolution and deformation within the southern San Andreas fault (SAF) zone. Detailed geologic mapping, measured sections, lithofacies analysis, and preliminary paleomagnetic data indicate that sedimentation and deformation in the Mecca Hills resulted from evolution of local fault zone complexities superimposed on regional subsidence and uplift. Sediment was derived from sources northeast of the SAF and transported southeast along the fault zone in large rivers, alluvial fans, and a smaller fault-bounded lake.
