Sports are so much more than just competition. Athletics provide a vast array of life lessons, and as educators and coaches, we need to be able to provide whole-person education in a competitive setting. Athletics can aid in the development of those intangibles, the things you can’t teach: optimism, coachability, passion, motivation, sportsmanship, among many others. Not only can our athletes develop and maintain these beneficial behaviors to make their team more cohesive both physically and mentally/emotionally, but use what they’ve learned through sports to give back to their community and youth programs. Check out this Edutopia article that helps to shed some light in how athletics can be used to promote SEL.

From a teacher perspective, I have found that while the age of my athletes stay the same, their interests, needs, and wants change dramatically as they cycle through the program. They would rather keep up their Snapchat streaks during a water break than converse with each other! Fortunately, the MIAA provides amazing coaches education opportunities that aid in the overall development of our student-athletes. Please check out their coaches page here.
