Among the phenomena that can be studied in this energy band, some require high time resolution and stability: rotation-powered and accreting millisecond pulsars, fast variability from black holes and neutron stars, X-ray bursts, and more. -

Hard (State) Problems PoS(MQW7)004 John A. Tomsick Space Science Laboratory, 7 Gauss Way, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-7450, USA E-mail: [email protected] For microquasars, the one time when these systems exhibit steady and powerful jets is when they are in the hard state. Thus, our understanding of this state is key to learning about the disk/jet connection. Recent observational and theoretical results have led to questions about whether we really understand the physical properties of this state, and even our basic picture of this state is uncertain. Here, I discuss some of the recent developmentsand possible problems with our under- standing of this state. Overall, it appears that the strongest challenge to the standard truncated disk picture is the detection of broad iron features in the X-ray spectra, and it seems that either there is a problem with the truncated disk picture or there is a problem with the relativistic reflection models used to explain the broad iron features. Introductions were made around the table and meeting room. Astrophysics Division (APD) Update Dr. Jon Morse, Director of APD, provided a status of the Division. He noted that the Science Plan would be released in late Spring of this year, and asked the APS to briefly review the draft, which he regarded as quite mature in its development. He also noted that the recent NRC report addressing the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Research and Analysis (R&A) program would require a response, with feedback from the subcommittee. -

Yet very little is known about this story, and about the politics and perceptions that are continuing to drive Japanese efforts despite many outright failures in the indigenization of the industry. This story, therefore, is important not just because of the widespread economic and technological merits of the space launch vehicles sector which are considerable. It is also important because it speaks directly to the ongoing debates about the Japanese developmental state and, contrary to the new wisdom in light of Japan's recession, the continuation of its high technology policy as a whole. -

Astrocappella — a Musical Exploration of the Universe

AstroCappella — A Musical Exploration of the Universe Singing about Science What drives scientists with a beat to croon about the heavens? Harmonizing with Science Educators Beyond the original grant Getting the Word Out How can I get a copy? While the idea of upbeat pop songs that are rich in science content might seem incongruous, a rocking band of techies with deep roots in the space science and education communities has melded music and science into the classroom-friendly AstroCappella Project. The Chromatics, an a cappella vocal band made up of astrophysicists, aerospace engineers, and other high-techers, has just released their 13-song CD/CD-ROM AstroCappella 2.0, which is the culmination of more than three years of collaborations with teachers, students, and fellow scientists. The AstroCappella songs take the listener on a journey which starts in our own solar system ("Nine Planets", "Sun Song", "Habitable Zone"), and ends up at the edges of space, time and gravity ("High Energy Groove", "Swift Song"). Along the way, listeners get tuneful introductions to the concept of light as electromagnetic radiation, spectroscopy, the Doppler shift, and the expansion of the Universe. Each song has extensive background and supporting materials, accessible through a computer's CD-ROM drive. These include self-guided activities, complete lesson plans, slide shows, science rock videos, beautifully illustrated background articles, and a glossary, as well as games and puzzles based on the content.
