FOREWORD

Mulgrave Country Club bowlers have achieved some notable successes at many levels of competition, as well as notable contributions to the Bowls section at the Club, as will be evident on reading this document.

This first compilation of this document is by no means a complete record, having been done some 50 years after the Club’s founding. However, historical records that are available are still being researched, and more details will be added as they are found.

Anyone who has information that they think should be included is encouraged to contact the Secretary of the Mulgrave Country Club Bowls Section. Emails can be addressed to [email protected], with a subject title of “History & Achievements”. Ideally full details should be given, including names and dates, but even partial information would be useful as a starting point for more research.

Note that the achievements listed are those made while a member of Mulgrave Country Club Bowls Section. Achievements while a member of another Club are not included.

Criteria applied for inclusion are as follows:  For Regional titles, only winners or runners up will be listed. For State titles, semi-finalists will also be listed, and for National titles quarter finalists will be included.  Prestigious events included should be limited to ones that would be generally regarded as significant at National or State level.  Prestigious awards cover any award that recognises a member of Mulgrave Country Club for their contributions to Bowls at National, State or Regional level. Contributions to other sports may also be included where these are considered significant.  Pennant recognition is limited to Section winners and above, except for Night Pennant, where there is now only one section per division (runners up also to be recognised). Teams will be listed for Division winners and runners up only.  Photographs are included to provide some historical content, and to allow faces to be put to the names of some achievers.

Thanks are due to Robyn James for providing access to records she has accumulated over a number of years. Included in these are the documents compiled for the Club’s 40th Anniversary by the historical committee of Jean White, Bob Splatt, Ken Kinson, and Geoff Woodley. These have been particularly useful in adding historic highlights to the “Club History” document. Thanks are also due to Nick Carter, Ian Wright, and Ian Currie for photographs and additional detail.

The successes of Mulgrave Country Club teams in Pennant competition are recorded in a separate document.

David West. April 2013.
