Shannon Montgomery Slatkin Spring 2012 Abstract Germanic Origins from the Perspective of the Y-Chromosome by Michael Robert St. Clair Doctor of Philosophy in German University of California, Berkeley Irmengard Rauch, Chair This dissertation holds that genetic data are a useful tool for evaluating contemporary models of Germanic origins. The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family and include among their major contemporary representatives English, German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Icelandic. Historically, the search for Germanic origins has sought to determine where the Germanic languages evolved, and why the Germanic languages are similar to and different from other European languages. Both archaeological and linguist approaches have been employed in this research direction. The linguistic approach to Germanic origins is split among those who favor the Stammbaum theory and those favoring language contact theory. Stammbaum theory posits that Proto-Germanic separated from an ancestral Indo-European parent language. This theoretical approach accounts for similarities between Germanic and other Indo- European languages by posting a period of mutual development. Germanic innovations, on the other hand, occurred in isolation after separation from the parent language. Language contact theory posits that Proto-Germanic was the product of language convergence and this convergence explains features that Germanic shares with other Indo-European languages. -

The archaeological record thus preserves evidence of contacts with diverse regions, whose vestiges can be found on settlements and in the cemeteries (grave inventories) as well. The earliest farmers arrived in the Carpathian Basin from southeastern Europe ca. 6000–5800 BCE and they culturally belonged to the Körös-Çris (east) and Starčevo (west) archaeological formations [1, 2, 3, 4]. They probably encountered some hunter-gatherer groups in the Carpathian Basin, whose archaeological traces are still scarce [5], and bioarchaeological remains are almost unknown from Hungary. The farmer communities east (Alföld) and west (Transdanubia) of the Danube River developed in parallel, giving rise around 5600/5400 BCE to a number of cultural groups of the Linearband Ceramic (LBK) culture [6, 7, 8]. -

Several ethnic groups belonging to distinct religions, speaking different languages and claiming divergent ancestries inhabit the region, generating a potentially diverse genetic reservoir. In addition, past pre-historical and historical events such as the out-of-Africa migrations, the Neolithic expansion from the Fertile Crescent, the Indo–Aryan treks from the Central Asian steppes, the westward Mongol expansions and the Muslim invasions may have chiseled their genetic fingerprints within the genealogical substrata of the Persians. On the other hand, the Iranian perimeter is bounded by the Zagros and Albrez mountain ranges, and the Dasht-e Kavir and Dash-e Lut deserts, which may have restricted gene flow from neighboring regions. By utilizing high-resolution mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers and reanalyzing our previously published Y-chromosomal data, we have found a previously unexplored, genetic connection between Iranian populations and the Arabian Peninsula, likely the result of both ancient and recent gene flow. Other parts of Europe speaking Germanic languages come next in Haplogroup W frequency. This article attempts to merge the data of contemporary linguistics and DNA genealogy in order to de- scribe the migrations and settlement of peoples and languages in Europe after the last Ice Age. In the new paradigm, three important groups of players have been identified: —R1a haplogroup bearers, condition- ally identified as Aryans. They arose around 20,000 years before the present (ybp) in central Asia and the Altai Mountains; after their migration along the southern route, they arrived in Europe between 10,000 - 9000 ybp, bringing proto-Indo European (PIE) and Indo European (IE) languages. In 4800 ybp they mi- grated eastward from Europe to the Russian Plane and then to India. About 3000 - 2500 ybp they mi- grated with their IE languages from the Russian Plain back to central, western, and southern Europe, lay- ing the genetic groundwork for peoples later called Celts, Germans, Italics, Greeks, Illyrians, and Balto-Slavs. -

The problem of the origins of the Poles and other peoples of Central and Eastern Europe has lead to great scientific and social interest given the genetic discoveries of recent years, which have shown these issues in a new light. These problems are being simulta- neously considered by archaeologists and historians, linguists and ethnologists, and anthropologists and interdisciplinary researchers. Method. The comparative and deductive methods were used, along with an analysis of the broader discourse (both scientific and popular), from the perspective of the sociology of science; hence source texts and mass culture-related texts are listed among the sources. Results. The term “Aryo-Slavic languages” seems more appropriate than “Indo-European”, especially for peoples with the advantage of hg R1a Y-DNA. The similarity of the chronicles and their symbolism is another factor that testifies to their cultural closeness and its accompanying biological (genetic) proximity. There is a series of questions and hypothesis. Conclusions. The affinity of languages, the Polish noble coats of arms and Sarmatian signs, and anthropometric data of Aryans and Poles, especially genetics (Y-DNA, mt DNA) indicate that the holders of hg R1a1 (and derivatives) described in the paper origi- nate from the same trunk. -

Menu New Vistas on the Distant Past The Story of I Y-DNA Haplogroup I is confusing. On the one hand it seems ancient in Europe. It rarely appears outside the boundaries of Europe and European colonies. So it is not a good candidate for arrival with farmers from the Near East. Nor does it seem the prime candidate for spread with the Indo-Europeans, since they travelled both west into Europe and east into the Indian Subcontinent. So the natural conclusion is that haplogroup I has been stalking around Europe since the Stone Age. It may not have been born in Europe, but it was a fairly early arrival. On the other hand the pattern of sublades looks relatively recent. If I-men had been moving around Europe from the earliest division of the I lineages, then we would expect to see a much greater mixture of the subclades, thinly and fairly evenly spread across Europe, just as we do with some of the mtDNA haplogroups known to have been carried by Mesolithic Europeans. Instead we see regional bunching, typical of relatively recent arrivals. What are we to make of these contradictions? The haplogroup may date deep into the distant European past, but it seems that most of the hunters and foragers who carried it have no direct descendants in the male line today. That doesn't mean that none of their genes survive in Europeans. It just means that the direct son to son to son line died out or "daughtered out" at some point. So the subclades that remain lead back to just a handful of Mesolithic men.
