DAVID MENASHRI (December 2008) Present Academic Positions at Tel Aviv University: • Director of the Center for Iranian Studies. • Dean of Special Programs. • Incumbent of the Parviz and Pouran Nazarian Chair for Modern Iranian Studies • Professor at the Department of Middle Eastern and African History. Prof. Menashri’s main field of academic research is history and politics of modern , Central Asia, the Persian Gulf and history of education in the Muslim world. David Menashri has been a visiting Fulbright scholar at both Princeton and and, among others, a visiting scholar at the , Melbourne University, the University of Munich and Waseda (Tokyo). In the late 1970s he spent two years conducting research and field studies in Iranian universities on the eve of the Islamic Revolution. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards in and abroad, including grants from Ford Foundation, Fulbright Foundation and Ben Gurion Foundation. Menashri’s most recent publication is the edited volume Religion and State in the (Hebrew, October 2006). His other publications include: Post-Revolutionary Politics in Iran: Religion, Society and Power was published in 2001 (London, Frank Cass; second print in 2002). Iran after Khomeini: Revolutionary Ideology versus National Interests (1999, Hebrew); Revolution at A Crossroads: Iran's Domestic Challenges and Regional Ambitions (1997); Iran: Between Islam and the West (1996, Hebrew); Education and the Making of Modern Iran (1992); Iran: A Decade of War and Revolution (1990); Iran in Revolution (1989, Hebrew). He is also the editor of: Central Asia Meets the Middle East (1998); Islamic Fundamentalism: A Challenge to Regional Stability (1993, Hebrew); and The and the Muslim World (1991). He is the author of numerous articles and papers on Iran and the Middle East. Between 1978 and 1999 he wrote all the 22 annual chapters on Iran in the Moshe Dayan’s yearly The Middle East Contemporary Survey. From 1994 he wrote the annual surveys on Iran in the Anti-Semitism Worldwide, published by Tel Aviv University’s Project for the Study of Anti-Semitism. He is the Chairman of the Maccabim Foundation (providing grants to students); former Chairman of ISEF, the International Sephradic Education Fund (1997-2006) and President of the Citizens’
