On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

Hammond National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum History of Collegiate Wrestling 2006 Preseason Outlook Oklahoma State entered the 2006 season in the unprecedented position of having four defending NCAA champions in its lineup and thus was a clear favorite to capture its fourth straight team title. The Cowboys’ formidable lineup included returning champions Zach Esposito, Johny Hendricks, Jake Rosholt, and Steve Mocco, plus All-Americans Coleman Scott and Daniel Frishkorn. The Pokes’ biggest challenge might come from in-state rival Oklahoma, led by two-time NCAA champion Teyon Ware. Sooner mentor Jack Spates felt he had perhaps his best team in his 17 years at the helm: “We’re not aiming for second place. We think we can compete with anyone.” Michigan, runner-up to OSU in 2005, defending Big Ten champion Illinois, and a young, but very talented Minnesota squad were expected to challenge the Oklahoma schools for the team crown. Each of these Big Ten schools had a pair of brothers that were All-American candidates – the Churellas at Michigan, the Tirapelles at Illinois and the Schlatters at Minnesota. Lehigh was seeking its fifth straight EIWA crown and would face a stiff challenge from Cornell, which was coming off its first top five finish in the NCAA tournament in half a century. Ohio State’s Myles Martin, a champion in 2016 with a win over Penn State’s Bo Nickal, a freshman at the time, fired a powerful double-leg shot late in the first period of the 184-pound national championship match. Nickal (31-0), a national champion in 2017, flipped Martin to his back with a high-flyer and, with 31 seconds left, scored a monumental pin. The pin put the Nittany Lions up by 12½ points and wrapped up a seventh NCAA team title in eight years. Penn State totaled 141½ points to Ohio State’s 134½ points. Three of Nickal’s teammates – Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, and Vincenzo Joseph — also won individual honors and three others finished among the top eight. Retherford finished his career with 94-straight wins and a third national title, beating Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry, 6-2, in the 149-pound final. The first of five Penn State finalists, Retherford’s win cut the Buckeye deficit to two points. A match later, junior Nolf (26-1) cruised by North Carolina State’s Hayden Hidlay and the Nittany Lions regained the lead over their Big Ten brethren 132½ to 130½.
